Teach FreenSleazy How to Speak Cowboy...
Our friend Free is thinking of moving from New York to the land of cowboy hats, hubcap sized belt buckles, and yellow haired girls.
He's from a place that produces tough and ready individuals that could survive anywhere, but he may as well be moving to another country when it comes to language, country terms ,slang and sayings.
He has proclaimed himself ,that he doesn't speak Cowboy...and there is a plentiful resource right here to do some book learnin' on that very subject.

So before he gets thrown out of too many strip joints, and has even more restraining orders filed against him ...Lets give him a hand...

Give him a Country, Cowboy, Southern, or Hillbilly saying ..and then translate it into common English.
If you only know the saying ,and not the translation...someone else will translate...or attempt too.

Re: Teach FreenSleazy How to Speak Cowboy...
OCB always says "Watch your top knot!"

When your packing into the mountains with a Pack Horse, you have 2 pack boxes fastened to a pack saddle on either side of the horse.Your other gear is stowed away between these boxes in the center of the horses back, wrapped with a tarp, and secured as a unit with a rope.
This rope is webbed through "D" rings on the britching and is tied at the highest point on top with a "Diamond" or a "King" knot......
The pack horse follows behind the rider, and if the Diamond knot goes off center, your pack has come loose.
In other words....Don't lose your load.
Mountain men used this term as well in the 1700 and 1800's as a farwell , and it also meant not to have your hair lifted, or to avoid "Scalping" by the Native Indians.
The Plainsmen and Mountain Men ,wore their hair long as a taunt to the Natives to try and take their long locks as a trophy. After it was removed from their head ,it was tied in a knot ,and left to dry.
Today it is still used by Cowboys as a friendly farwell between close friends that understand Cowboy and Mountain culture.

Re: Teach FreenSleazy How to Speak Cowboy...
"Buckle Bunny"....A city girl who's never seen ,or stepped in horseshit ,that loves to chase only Rodeo Cowboys.

"Keep your powder dry"....A saying from the cap and ball black powder days ,when you loaded a charge of gunpowder into each cylinder in your handgun, and pressed a lead ball into the chamber individualy....If your powder got wet the sidearm became as useful as a hammer....In other words "Be careful"

"His spur run the nail"...To quit or pass away, a cowboy hung up his spurs for good.

"Frog strangler"...Heavy rain for a day or more.

"Throw a loop"....Toss a lariat.

"Worn at the heel"...His boots are so worn down from travel and hard work , he's been there and done that.

"Header 'n' Heeler"....Roping team on horseback, one team member, the "Header" ropes the head of the steer, afterwards the other or "Heeler" ropes the back feet.

"Sticking Tommy"....A large wicked looking spike with four edges, with a candleholder on the back end, a miners tool for light .

"Arkansas Toothpick"...A double edged knife of over a foot long, with usually a coffin shaped handle.

"Hide away"...A hidden hangun, usually under the shoulder.

"Two Holer"...When sorting cattle in a large stock pen, the only way to determine sexes is by looking at the back end. One hole is a bull or steer, two holes is a heifer or cow.
It's also a term used by young cowboys these days for an undesirable girlfriend....No traditional cowboy would ever use this term to describe any woman, and is considered the ultimate insult.

Re: Teach FreenSleazy How to Speak Cowboy...
"Light a shuck"...To get the hell outta there.

"Mossy horn"...A steer who's survived long enough to grow moss on his horns, when refering to an old cowboy, it hints at his wisdom.

"Long drop"....Outhouse, for obvious reasons.

"He's been over the mountains"....Refers to a mans experience, and extensive knowledge.

"Worn a lot of leather of the tree"....He or she has spent so much time on the back of a horse, they've almost forgot how to walk.

As much as I appreciate your concern, I pride myself on my eloquence and usage of the King's English. I rather doubt that adopting a throwback to a dialect that was a mired version of 1700's Scotland would ever change my appreciation for the English Language. However Sir, I do appreciate your concern, and should I need it, I will certainly call on my mate, The Earl of Canada. At this juncture I find it highly doubtful that I will be encountering any situations that involve hog jowls, chicken beheading, or bull sperm extraction.

Oh come on! That was funny!

Yeah...That was funny...
How did you know I have an Uncle Earl?....and he does live in Canada.
And...Bull sperm extraction is rather easy.....unless of course your the dude on the bottom...holding the one gallon collection jar.

Re: Teach FreenSleazy How to Speak Cowboy...
Hey I have known a lot of cowboys. Yes the kind that ride bulls in rodeos and work on farms. The funny part is most of the ones that I found to claim to be the real deal turned out to be from places like NY City or Malibu,California. When I lived in Florida I would run into people that would use expressions that would just make me laugh.Stuff like, "I couldn't carry a tune if it came in a bucket" or "I haven't seen you since you were knee high to a grass hopper". I swear they actually said stuff like that and I would looked at them and swear they just said shit like that for people like me to say "You don't really talk like that do you?" Or wondered if they said that stuff for the tourists. But now being out here in Louisiana with Kam is something all together different.I need a translator most times when talking to these people. I'm not even kidding.I'm not sure if it's cowboy or redneck? I was married to a rodeo cowboy. I have been to many rodeos and those guys are a different bread all together. But I think that's from having a bull step on their head once to many times.Maybe it's from them falling of their horse, but either way they all have something a bit off about them.Think about it, would a normal person voluntarily get on a pissed of bulls back for fun and maybe a little money?

Kiss, I think this is a different world. They are obsessed with roadkill, alligators, squirrels and guns. And for those of you who make fun of New York accents heard these guys you wouldn't think New Yorkers had an accent in comparison.I seriously spend more time asking people to repeat things or translate them into some form of English than I ever have in my life.Kam just laughs and translates what he can.

Roadkill is over rated...We don't have alligators here but we do have many grizzlies, squirrel meat tastes like your sucking on a pine cone, and guns are just a tool that precisley ejects a small piece of lead at a very rapid speed.
...You've also never been more confused until you've heard a Interior Native Indian speak four sentences...unless your with a Newfoundlander...You'd swear he was from Ireland.

I do enjoy listening to the American Southern accents on some of those reality shows , they make some of us Canadians sound educated.

Re: Teach FreenSleazy How to Speak Cowboy...
Syb I have friends in Mexico that deal with tourists everyday. They always say the only ones they have a hard time understanding are the southern accents and the Texas accents. I told them not to feel bad because we have the same problem with them. They did say a few more things about the Texas group but I wont go into that now. Lets just say they seem to be a bread all their own. Haha...
