Re: Retro Candy
I used to buy a fat licorice stick called a "Billy" I suppose they resembled a billy club.
They said "Since 1920" on the box, and were so strong they would stain your teeth black for a week.
I ate them so often many people thought I chewed tabacco.

Well I figured at the time ,that to know me is to love me....When I moved up here I had to quit the licorice cold turkey.
I was a bit of a grumpy ass for two weeks.

I was a bit of a grumpy ass for two weeks. you'd hate to be me then, i cant eat black licorice, i'm allergic to it. when i was 8 years old, i ate a 2 pound bag of Licorice Nibs by myself over a three hour period, i broke out in hives. i still do.

Re: Retro Candy
I loved Bonomo Turkish Taffy, Violets, candy necklaces, wax lips, bottle tops and those dots on strips of paper. A few years ago my daughter and I were talking about this very subject and a guy sitting next to us on the plane happen to hear and tell us that his girlfriend or wife (can't remember what she was) worked for a candy company that made Violets and because of that he always had some with him. He hands me a package of them and said we were welcome to have them.I was so excited...They smelled just like I remembered. Then I gave one to my daughter and I took one and popped it in my mouth and thought, "Wait....oh yeah they smell great but taste horrible!!!!" Of course I couldn't tell the man that so I just had to eat the damn thing. YUK!
I remember a candy called Mary Janes as well but would not eat it because my uncle broke a tooth biting into that damn candy. By the way Charleston Chews where awesome if you froze them them. Then you had to eat them the same way you ate Turkish Taffy (basically that was what was in the center anyway) and Jolly Ranchers when they used to be made in bar form not bite size.. You had to Smack it on a hard surface to break them into pieces.
FYI there are stores and web sites that specialize in hard to find Retro candy that are either still made, started making again or something close to what they were. "Dylan's candy store" has a section of retro candy as well.
Oh I almost forgot Pez candy in those great dispensers. If you have any from your childhood you might want to look them up online. Some of them are worth a small fortune.(The dispenser not the candy. I wouldn't recommend eating the candy if it's still there since your childhood, especially being you can buy some fresh candy for the dispenser almost anywhere.) And why is it that they just seemed to taste better if you ate the candy from the dispenser rather than the wrapper?
