Buffalo Lane
New client past Buffalo Lane on Bison Lane. The most amazing log home. All the logs are from South Carolina made from a kit on 9 acres. Absolutely beautiful inside and out!!!!!
Today, driving back I was shock to see a buffalo in the pasture. A dark brown buffalo. Then a beautiful cream colored one. A few actually but when I asked I was told they are some Beeffalo. Part buffalo and part cow. And, the owner knows the percent of buffalo in his each of his beeffalos.
Hmmmm?

Buffalo being migrating herds , are incredibly difficult to keep in a pasture of any size. Buffalo fencing is usually constructed of 9"x6" railway ties.
If they get out we would rope the smallest one with the biggest horse ,tie it to a very large fir tree, and the herd would circle around the trapped animal , and they could be dealt with then.
Beefalo, being half domestic cow, are much easier to raise, and handle..but they are not like cattle.
They are a hybrid species that are half wild and still behave different. Most Beefalo farms have now gone to the pure bred Buffalo in the North as they can survive better in deep snow conditions. They have managed to breed the Woodland Bison into some of them, which are bigger and even tempered. The Canadian Government allowed it due to an Anthrax outbreak in the larger population of Woodland Bison to save the gentics.
Building a log home from a kit would be sooooo much easier than dragging the trees out of the bush, peeling ,notching , and stacking them up yourself.

Re: Buffalo Lane
My brother lives in a log home built in the 1800's. They are really nice for many reasons but if you ever need any work done you better read up and plan on doing it yourself. Most times you can't just call someone. He had to rebuild his stone chimney himself and redo the stuff between the logs. Most people call it chinking but it is not called that in all types. I don't remember the name but I know if its white between the logs its another name. Anyway you should see the face of a cable guy when they come to install something and they just look and say"Ah...How am I supposed to run cable behind that?" Then my brother says he will do it himself but they can run it to the house from the poll. That usually get a thank you from the guys.
I love his house. Log homes are always warm and cozy feeling. Even with modern conveniences, you feel like you stepped back in time.

I'm a timber framer, broad axe beam maker, and log builder,....I've built two log homes for myself ,six for other people and countless outbuildings here ,and on other properties.
Thanks for the heads up on how difficult it is , but I suppose thats why other people hire me in winter to log build for them.
We also use a product called perma chink here ,it's latex based and it is used to seal between logs for winter environments. It is applied with a chinking gun , misted with water and smoothed down with a rubber spatula. It resembles mortar, but expands with the log in changing humidity.

Re: Buffalo Lane
Syb, I know that guy that build log homes have names for the stuff they use and I think you are right it is a different type of stuff for colder climates but the original stuff in the 1800's had a name I can't recall. I will try to remember to ask my brother next time I talk to him. It was also mentioned to me when I went on one of the historical town tours and the tour guide had said that there were different types of filler for between the logs. But to keep it simple most refer to it as Chinking rather than explaining the reasons and differences unless they have a group that is more interested in the buildings and how they are made.I just know having a log home is a always an ongoing project so you better really love them if you decide to do it. I really do love his house. He replaced a few logs himself a few years back and I thought he was going to sell the house after that but he admitted he loved it to much and he would do it all over again.
