Smoke Tan ,Flame Haircut..and a Big Ass
So the Big Brass....or what we call the Big Ass , called me in to a steep incline fire with a team of 11 firefighters ....4 of them new members.
I refused to helo in a bunch of new equipment because it was to heavy for the Choppers, and if we had to evacuate....which we did , there wasn't enough aircraft available to evacuate everybody including equipment.
Oh....and Weather National was calling for high winds, which the Big Ass chose to ignore.
The Big Ass in their infinate wisdom...dropped equipment in anyways, about fifteen minutes later.
We were on a ridge, and the wind kicked up, and I called in locations of aircraft and estimated time of arrivals.
I knew we were screwed, and the fire vortex had started.
I set everyone to digging trenches ...or what we call graves, and all water went into them, and soaking down fire resistant suits.
The first chopper arrived like the cavalry, and loaded the "Newbies" on the airlift lifelines....and they got a little warm going out.
We started burying ourselves in the dirt, and we could hear the roar of the vortex, and the live trees exploding near us.
I lit smoke a flare and started praying, just about then my buddy Ben disobeyed orders and came through the smoke, hell bent for leather and trailing sparks dousing us with water from a bag.
We climbed in the bag and he lifted us out quick as possible.
The Big Ass was pissed I left 25 thousand in equipment behind to burn, and they were also pissed I called them all assholes.
I look forward to my reprimand ,and demotion from Captain.
My team had a good laugh at me catching shit from the Big Ass , while my non-existant hair was still smoking and the back of my hands were still shedding skin,and the 16 inch name tag across my back had been burned off.
Oh ..and lets not forget my perfect Farmer smoke tan...I just feel horrible about all that new equipment that got roasted.
Any of the ladies around here like a flame haircut with a farmers tan,...extra crispy ?

Well, I got pretty upset when I found they had changed the formula to my favorite toilet bowl cleaner...now I just feel petty.

You better stick to cowboying it is much safer amd yo don;t have to wear your name on your shirt. Sory i haven't been around to harrass yo i just did a hospital stay, the lap tos the doctors have don't get WN. OCB

i say, you need not feel bad for all the equipment lost, of they were dumb enough to ignore the weather forecast for wind, and drop it anyway, fuck 'em, let it burn.

indeed , human life is to short and you cant put a price tag on it. we had a guy worked at the dmv, head all burnt, they gave him a job taking photos, had the bluest eyes I ever seen, but you don't dare ask what happen. next time I went he was gone. wad another friend got burnt too. but that's another story.

Got demoted to regular Fire Attack,...less pay but not a lot of responsibility,..I just laughed and thanked them.

No I don't have a death wish, I just like fighting forest fires. It started years ago with me fighting them around my place to save what I owned. Forestry would show up and there was this soot covered Cowboy that had half put it out already without support.
They made me take a course, and it evolved into them hiring me because I'd just show up anyways. Eventually I took courses on interface fires, and steep incline fires, and then one day I was voluntold ...I didn't want the promotion...to Captain.
They've demoted me now to regular fire attack, but didn't take away my command radio...Which is good ,because thats my only contact to 911 at home here.
In this instance the "Big Brass" was from a different area, and they didn't know me and my unusual style , and how I respond, or in fact ,don't respond,...to chain of command.

So my hired Cowgirl had a couple of friends come out to help on the place because they heard I was in a bad way....which I'm not !
They helped with chores, and some maintenance stuff I had too do.
So as a thank you too them I cooked dinner for them .
They seemed to know where my Mason Jars are stored with a flamable clear liquid inside them, ...and they turned my satellite T.V. from Country western to freakin' 1970's dance music...
They're dancing to that shit in my living room, pushing my furniture against the log walls, and screaming at each other.
I'm just gonna hang out here awhile.

So the Big Ass ..or Big Brass that had the infinate wisdom to send my crew into that fire....because we are considered the best at steep incline fires....got reviewed, debriefed ,and demoted,....Actually the guy got fired by the head Government office of Ministry of Environment. We just call them M.O.E.
They wanted to reinstate my rank, and sent a heartfelt apology for "Putting my crew at risk by sending a team into our territory that were not experienced in fighting fires in the Southern Interior...and blatantley giving orders against the better judgement of more experienced firefighters of lower rank..."
I think that means me.
I responded.....
The offices in Victoria, need to stop sending staff that make life threatening decisions, and sending firefighters into terrain that is impossible to control combustion rates ,due to arid climate ,high unpredictable winds, and unqualified individuals in charge who's experience only includes fighting fires in temperate rainforests.
At this time I will consider your reinstatement to my former rank, this issue is now under review until further notice.
I would also like to confirm that ongoing couciling will be provided for--name ommited---by the Ministry , as she was ordered into a situation beyond our control, and against my better judgement, and has suffered superficial burns,and traumatic stress.
I am confident in a short time she will come to terms with what happened, and make a full recovery.
I would also like to state that I do realize that I am a difficult individual to manage , and not really a "Team Player."
If another incident occurs like this one, that puts my firefighting team at risk, I will make the eight hour drive to your office in Victoria, and by the time our meeting is over, you are the one who will need counciling.
