Summer time stuff...The Drive-in Theater
Any of you fortunate enough to have made some memories at the Drive-In Theaters?
When we were little ones, my parents would at least once a year, dress us in our jammies, pop bags of popcorn and take us all for a double feature at the drive in, we wore our jammies cuz somewhere along the way, we'd all fall asleep seeing as we were being kept up past our usual bedtimes.
As a young teenager, we would walk or get dropped off by a parent and just hang with our gang in the bench section near the concession stand, hoping to run into other friends or meet new cute boys.
Highschool dates were awesome at the drive in, very intimate and a lot of making out.

Yep, Drive Ins were great. Unfortunately, they're pretty much a thing of the past around here

Re: Summer time stuff...The Drive-in Theater
dad drove a huge station wagon back in the mid 70's (with 8 kids, it was the best vehicle option) when we would got to the drive in (sadly, there aren't many left around here anymore), dad would tie an old mattress on the top luggage rack, and back into the stall. both of my older brothers and two sisters would climb up on the roof of the car and stretch out on the mattress, while the rest of us kids would fold down the tail gate and rear seat, ans watch from there. we would do this a few times a month. it didn't take long before we noticed that more and more people were doing the same thing by backing in with mattresses in the their truck beds.

Re: Summer time stuff...The Drive-in Theater
Our family farm was half way between two towns, both had a Drive-in.Both also closed down at about the same time.
One town had a whole pile of Dutch girls to ask on a date, the other had a lot of German girls....I went there a bunch , it was always haying season so us boys always had a pocket full of spending money.
Funny thing was, I don't think I ever saw a whole movie there and I seem to remember something about a Father searching the trucks and cars looking for his blonde daughter...Thank God for tinted windows.

Re: Summer time stuff...The Drive-in Theater
we're talking mid to late 70's here folks. i don't really remember the film, i believe it may have been "Herbie Goes to Monte Carlo" or "Herbie Goes Bananas", but i do remember that when mom and dad would take us to the drive in, it was ALWAYS a Disney flick, and they would ALWAYS open the show with some sort of Mickey Mouse or Donald Duck cartoon. l did that, i would much rather watch a 15 minute cartoon over 25 minutes of previews for movies that won't be released theatrically for over a year...(and if you go to more than one movie, you see the same damn previews!)

Re: Summer time stuff...The Drive-in Theater
Summer always means outdoor concerts and everything water. I always loved summer. Water skiing, swimimg, sailing, tubing, going to falls with my friends, taking the boat out, etc.
We always seemed to fit in horse back riding and a softball game as well.
At night there was always music to listen to somewhere.
Our summer/weekend house was about 10 minutes from the site of the original Woodstock so you can just imagine how many bands loved going up there to play and check out the site.Every bar around there had bands every weekend. The outdoor concerts are everywhere up there and in the city. Of course at the Jersey shore as well.Music is everywhere in the summer.

Re: Summer time stuff...The Drive-in Theater
it's pretty ironic that Chazzy picked this time to post a thread about Drive Ins. Minnesota just opened up a new one, about 45 minutes from here. just out side of the Twin Cities metro area. over the years, the drive in lost popularity, and dwindled from 25,000 nation wide to just 350. but lately, there's been a resurgence of them popping up more and more. the new owners are hoping that it will gain speed and business will stay good for them. they had a packed house for their opening weekend. and it's located next to a race track, so hopefully they will complement each other's business.
