I Need The Wisdom of an Old Cowboy
I have a young cow, that will not stand and nurse her calf.
I've roped her and tied her to a fence. Then I haltered her and tied her to a tree. I've hobbled her but she won't stop kicking at the calf, and running him over.....He's going to starve to death..I need some advice here, I'm at my wits end.

Re: I Need The Wisdom of an Old Cowboy
I have had that before and I bottle fed the baby and culled her sorry ass. I also kept a nurse cow that would let anyone eat, sometimes she would have four at once. Do you have a drenching bottle to keep him going? Sorry buddy I don't have a miracle answer. Sometimes they do that if they something is wrong with the calf. Sorry OCB

Yup ,I read your post and resorted to tube feeding.
I pinned her in my squeeze and milked her, and i'll continue that till she figures out the process. Next time you all eat a Big Mac in about fall time...you can think of me, and how I win an arguement.
He's got about a 50/50 chance now that she's stopped running him over, and he can get the milk he'll need ,although with my farmer fingers it's a little tough milking.
Thanks for reaffirming my decisions OCB..

My head will probably fit my hat in another week..I didn't think it was possible for it to get any bigger, but it did.
I just have to stop subconciously scratching it, and the scar won't be too bad.

Re: I Need The Wisdom of an Old Cowboy
I spent the whole damn day scraping and piling up manure in my wintering pens...who would think 400 cows could create such a pile of fertilizer...It's a damn good thing I don't have any neighbors within a mile of me.
Thats right..I have a glamorous profession.
I'm wondering...should I spread it between cuttings of hay?
Another rancher I know does that, but he's in a different climate, and he claims that he gets more yield, or ton per acre, I can keep it wet so it won't burn out from the nitrogen levels.

Well see there is a problem with spreading it thin...After an hour of her shoveling she ties her dark hair back, strips off her shirt down to her sports bra, chokes up on the shovel, and then she starts to really sweat.
I'm to busy looking in the rear view mirror while driving the truck to focus on how thick she's shoveling it out.
I do yell sweet words of encouragement though...like "your doing great, just bend over a little further, and put your back in it " or, "If it gets really hot you may need to take off those wranglers as well...I always wanted to see set of stars and stripes panties,...after this load , run into the house and grab me a cold one would you"
You just gotta love my little manure spreader...They don't make them like that no more.

Rodeo today.....I've entered in some cutting and reining events on account of my sore head...and I'm told I'm getting to old.
I'm also working the door at the dance later tonight, it seems I'm not to old to check for knives, and gently escort drunken cowboys out the door.

I hope you did well in the two horse events, and didn't get any knots on your head being a bouncer. That is work for guys with 50 inch chests 60 inch bellies and an I.Q. of 12 and a big wooly beard. Not for a ladies man like yourself.

Re: I Need The Wisdom of an Old Cowboy
I won a buckle in reining, but thats due to the horse I was riding ,he's in fact responsible for half of the cowboy I think I am..And at the last minute due to an injury of another cowboy riding bulls, and an event screw up ,they were looking for someone to steer wrestle...That longhorn hit the dirt Bulldogged ,with a rubber neck at 10.05 seconds..so I was fourth.
I picked up my hat, shifted the sand outta the crack of my ass, smiled and said..."Who's getting old ?" I held second for 6 chutes, but got shut out to fourth later on in the day.
My I.Q. is in fact probably twelve, but they told my Mom it was so low on the sale it's imeasurable, which could mean I'm in fact a genious.
I only had a few problems at the dance...One native girl who swore she hated Bull Riders with blue eyes, and very inebriated...She was asked to leave. Then a few other city cowboys that were gently planted in the dirt outside the front door, and went to there Ford Fusions licking their wounds.
A few ass grabbing buckle bunnies, but I let that slide as a compliment.
My chest is under 50 inches, around 46 or so..and I wear a 34 inch waist, 32 inches after haying season and I have no facial hair unless I'm in cowcamp for a week or two.
So nothing out of the ordinary.

Yah..I had my 30-30, and my .45 tucked in my belt.
The problem is their circulatory system is almost prehistoric, they bleed out real slow.
So if you let the air out of them at 100 feet, you probably wouldn't keep your scalp.
He took 3 steps toward me and then swatted the ground, and left a 2 foot long furrow about 5 inches deep.
My horse stood his ground and my Rotweiller looked up at me and said "WTF?"
He had no fear of me, and just walked away, I went back later , I wear a size 13 or 14 boot, and his back track dwarfed my boot by 3 inches or so, not counting his claws.

You were on a damn good horse, one of mine didn't let a bear bother but If you were close to a moose you'd better had a deep seat. I think I would trade that 30 30 for at least a 45 70. I don't have a Marlin 45-70, but I do have a 7mm Mag.and it's to heavy / awkward for bush riding.
You know the story, I'll carry that weapon for 2 years and never see a bear, then leave my gun at home and see three in one day.

Re: I Need The Wisdom of an Old Cowboy
Saw the giant again, this time about 500 feet from my house..
He's starting to worry and annoy me.
He must have a kill close by...or maybe a female, which I worry about even more, because that would mean there are two of them.
A Native friend of mine had lost his foot to a grizzly, and said he'd come sing a song to the bear ,to ask him to leave me alone.
I said "Well Dove ' His name is Yellow Dove'..your song didn't work to well when you lost your foot"..He said "I didn't know the song then"
I'm not sure if this big guy is ready for a Native Lullaby.
If he decides to charge at us, my friend may have to change his name to Prairie Chicken.

Yah ,loud noises seem to work good on those bears, but in thick timber ,warning shots are sometimes the last thing the hunter ever hears.
When a grizzly is having a bad day, about the only thing you can do is let the air out of him.
I may be not quite all there sometimes, but I think I'm stable enough not to consider roping a male Grizzly bear, the last thing I'd want is to be attached to 8 or 9 hundred pounds of pure evil testosterone with 7 inch claws , that would rip your arms off ,and have them for lunch while you slowly bleed out.
But that would be a hell of a story now wouldn't it ?

So I just got back from the Vet in town.
I found one of my horses with his lower jaw ripped open and hanging loose... Counting internal stitches as well as external, there was a total of 184....Not counting plastic surgery to reconstruct his jawbone. He also lost some teeth and part of his tongue, and we may be able to save his eye.
I won't be here much tomorrow ,it's Mister bears last day on earth.
I'm going to let some air out of him.

Thanks partner...but shooting long distance is something I'm kinda good at.
The horse is still at the Vet Clinic and doing well, another week and we take the 6 drains out.
So far no infection, and we believe he can see ok from his damaged eye......My loyal cowgirl has not left his side for so much as a pee break.
Her family is bringing her food and water, and she has freed my time up to focus on problems around here.

I tracked him for some time yesterday, and he took a path up over the Howler rim, and down into a valley we call the Coldwater.
He's some distance away and heading in the right direction.
He's also not clawing any trees to mark his territory , so I figure he's got moving on his mind.

Got my horse back today, and his jaw and face seems to work fine.He seems to have some vision left in his eye, and the Vet figures it will improve with time.
Nothing but green grass ,and cold clear creek water in his future till next year...and some cool facial scars to tell his story.
I also heard that the Deadman Indian Band about 60 Kilometers away , as the crow flies, has had some problems with a Grizzly raiding their dried fish supplies.
It seems he has a dark red furrow burned down one side of his ass, and he's no longer charging at the sight of people.
I'm sorta happy I never let the air out of him.

Hey..OCB...you ever had to dig fence post holes into the top of a mountain using a hammer and chisel ?...It seems the very top of my property is 2 inches of soil and then solid rock.
I'm starting to figure out why the old timers nailed barb wire to trees, or didn't have a fence at all.

Re: I Need The Wisdom of an Ol out d Cowboy
I have used a bel-tec which is a post hole digger with carbide points but it went a small four wheel drive tractor which you may not be able to get where you need them. but it will drill a hole right thru a big rock, but it is slow. I also made circular baskets out of hog wire or reinforcing mesh for flat concrete work. make about 3 feet round and 4 high and set them where you need and fill full of rock. I know I have some that are 30 years old and still holding cows in. OCB

On the positive side ,I'm getting in good shape...my circulation is so good , I can achieve a hard-on by just thinking about the State of Florida.

No.. it looks like a slender long female torso, with a trimmed landing strip shaved near the bottom...
You know what I'm talking about.

Re: I Need The Wisdom of an Old Cowboy
You two need to get a room. I was thinking about what I told you and I didn't make myself very clear I would build those carins about every hundred feet or so, stretch the wire tight then just put stays in between, I didn't to build one for every post. do you ever have to build take down fence that is a real pain in the ass.
