Saturday, US Celebrates Armed Forces Day
May 17, 2014 10:59 AM
Saturday is Armed Forces Day in the United States, when Americans pay tribute to the men and women who serve in the U.S. Armed Forces in times of war and peace.
The commemoration is held on the third Saturday in May and events are held across the country to honor Americans in uniform, including parades, air shows, base and ship tours and various military displays.
Armed Forces Day was created in 1949, during the Harry Truman presidency, combining the previously separate Army, Air Force and Navy days. The day stemmed from the unification of the military services in the new Department of Defense.

That was very kind of you to say Kiss. Whenever I see someone in Uniform, I make a point of thanking them for their service. The look of appreciation on their faces can't be described in words.

When I thank someone in uniform for their service, I get strange looks.

Yes for real. Not going to stop me from doing it but some days it does make me hesitate.

When I thank someone in uniform for their service, I get strange looks. that's because at Mcdonal's they make so many mistakes they don't hear the words Thank You! very often...(hey she just said uniform, she never said what kind... )

Re: Saturday, US Celebrates Armed Forces Day
On a similar note, this Monday is Memorial Day. It's taken on the role of being the official start to the summer season and viewed by many as a reason to take off of work on the previous Friday to be able to have four days in a row off. Across the Nation, there are picnics, barbeques, and other gatherings of friends and families. Another paid Holiday to look forward to. What's forgotten by many is the reason for the "holiday" is to remember those who paid the ultimate price for service to our Nation. I have no problem with the gatherings, as long as people understand why they're able to have them.

We are the forgotten, that are willing.
Led by the unknowing.
Fighting for the ungrateful.
Against an enemy who is unknown,
..and unforgiving.

Re: Saturday, US Celebrates Armed Forces Day
one of the best military tributes ever.
"Arlington"-Trace Adkins
I never thought that this is where I'd settle down,
I thought I'd die an old man back in my hometown,
They gave me this plot of land, me and some other men, for a job well done,
There's a big white house sits on a hill just up the road,
The man inside he cried the day they brought me home,
They folded up a flag and told my mom and dad, we're proud of your son
[Chorus:]
And I'm proud to be on this peaceful piece of property,
I'm on sacred ground and I'm in the best of company,
I'm thankful for those thankful for the things I've done,
I can rest in peace, I'm one of the chosen ones, I made it to Arlington
I remember daddy brought me here when I was eight,
We searched all day to find out where my granddad lay,
And when we finally found that cross,
He said, "son this is what it cost to keep us free" Now here I am,
A thousand stones away from him,
He recognized me on the first day I came in,
And it gave me a chill when he clicked his heels, and saluted me.
[Repeat Chorus]
And every time I hear twenty-one guns,
I know they brought another hero home to us
We're thankful for those thankful for the things we've done,
We can rest in peace, 'cause we are the chosen ones,
We made it to Arlington, yea dust to dust,
Don't cry for us, we made it to Arlington
