Meh. Ive heard enough about him today. I never understood what the big deal was about him, but I respect the people that did. I heard someone say on the news today that he was the greatest musician that ever lived, better than Bach or Beethoven. I almost choked. An entertainer? Yes. A musician? Ive seen better musicians at local bars

Re: January 8th 1935...
that may be true, but one can wonder where today's music would be, if he hadn't gotten into the music biz...he influenced a TON of artists. and you are entitled to your opinion... just like i am about the Beatles and John Lennon.

Oh, I totally agree about the influence thing. And, as I've said before, I feel the same way about Bob Dylan. I never really understood what the hullabaloo was about him, but he influenced so many of the people I do like. However, I consider Dylan to be a musician, not an entertainer. A lot of the buzz about Elvis began from his on stage performances that were considered almost taboo in the 50's. One televised performance required that the camera only shoot him from the waist up.
My only beef with what the talking head on the news said about him being the best musician of all time. For the record, I always considered Frank Sinatra to be an entertainer too, not a musician. I know, I'm splittin hairs.
And BTW, yesterday was David Bowie's birthday too
