Re: Hope ya remembered
I was wondering if someone was going to make a post on this. I almost did earlier, but then I thought .. naughty, let's see if anyone else remembered ... I was beginning to think nobody remembered, so when I did make a post, I was gonna comment on how quickly ppl forget what a important day in our history this day is

Re: Hope ya remembered
I've written. 11 letters to my congressman, & the D.O.D. over the past 3 years, asking why only a couple of men were awarded medals at the D-Day invasion , including Gen Taylor's Jeep driver.. ( are you Fuckin serious? ). I've always felt strongly that every soldier in the 1st three waves of the landing force at Omaha beach should have been awarded a bronze star at LEAST. They all saw the assault teams getting mowed down, surely after the 1st assault team was nearly decimated, the next 2 waves knew their chances of getting to the cliff alive was almost nill, but they still tried. So I sent another letter to my congressman, saying I will give my flying cross, & my air medal back if he would order a investigation of the events on Omaha beach. Surely there has to be others that should have been awarded medals.

Re: Hope ya remembered
I learned something new about Pearl Harbor. Apparently, FDR almost had the American Air Force shot down, out of the sky, by mistake. Four hours after the Japs left the islands. A squadron of planes were seen flying over pearl. The guy who called it in to the white house, was told to have what's left of the navy, shoot every plane from the sky. Trouble was, the only planes over pearl were ours. They expected another attack, but it never came. So when they saw that many planes in the air at once, they thought it was the second wave. Lucky for the Air Force, The japs took out all the military communications on their first strike. Otherwise FDR orders would have had his own planes shot down.

Re: Hope ya remembered
Kam and I had the privilege of visiting Pearl Harbor this summer. I have to admit unlike him I was not at all into history when I was in school. Even if I was I really don't think schools give kids a good picture of what really happened. It was very emotional to be standing on the USS Missouri and listening to the stories. Or the USS Bowlin And the USS Arizona memorial. The one thing that stood out to me was the people we came across on the USS Missouri. There was a mix of people from all over the world there. The stories were all very emotional.I saw this family that I believe was Japanese. One of the family members was pushing a wheelchair with what was most likely her grandmother or great grandmother from the looks of her. The elderly woman could not stop crying.
And there was a story of how the men on that ship were attacked my a pilot that failed and got killed during the attack. Although he was a Japanese pilot the commander of the ship explained that he felt the pilot was only doing what he was ordered to do and should receive a full military funeral even if he was from the other side. He said that if any of them got killed doing their duty to their country they could only hope that the other side would do the same for them. Those boys made a flag for the Japanese pilot and gave that pilot who flew his plane right into their ship and tried to kill them a full military respectful funeral. There were many other great stories but that one really made me think that those men really had to dig deep into their soles to be able to do that. I have a lot of respect for them.
