yeah, i took the kids back to their mom's tonight, and there were a few streets that were drifted over good. and that's in TOWN, sure am glad i have the night off and didn't have to drive to the bar...it's about 15 miles out in the country. on a horseshit road that is the last one the plows hit. and that's the same road i used to drive to go to work at the place i just got fired from, so that's the big bonus of getting fired, no more treacherous driving for me.

Horseshit road happens to be a first class neighborhood around here...They don't plow that road either, due to the Moose carcasses frozen to the gravel.

Re: BBBB--BBBB--RRRRRRRRRR
Seriously why do people choose to live in a place that has such extreme weather as -25 on a regular basis? There are so many pretty places to live how do you live in places like that and survive? The propane price gouging that's happening needs to have government intervention. They get involved with shit they shouldn't but now that people need this to live they don't step in. It's crazy. I hope that things get better for those that are dealing with these unbelievable weather issues and have to rely on propane right now for heat.I just hope that people don't try to go without because that's when we find many of them dead.
Syb what do you do for the animals when its this crazy cold. I know that here there have been so many articles about animals left outside dying. What can a farmer do? Realistically all animals can't be brought in and there is a point that their coats don't cut it. I know that they are giving hay out and asking people lay it out for wild animals and feral animals here.Is there anything you guys do?

I've hear about livestock freezing to death also. I would be that Syb keeps all the wild animals as warm as he can in his house.

Re: BBBB--BBBB--RRRRRRRRRR
It actually isn't that cold here, your right Kiss.....
O.K.....the animal and cold issue....First increase feed, at - 20 ,increase grains, at -30, about ten pounds extra hay per 200 pounds of animal...thats EXTRA. At -45..All the feed they can consume in 5 hours, I just give them all they want..
When you live in an extreme environment, and if you bring an animal from say Vancouver, which is at sea level, and very rarely goes below freezing, you cannot transplant that animal after about September.
Its internal lymph node system doesn't have time to send out the hormones to tell the body its at 3 or 4 thousand feet, and if it isn't given shelter will freeze to death...or do very poorly. At the end of winter it will grow the right length of coat,...but by then it's too late.
If the animals system is given time to adjust, it will grow more winter coat if they are a northern hemisphere animal...Their circulatory system will also adjust, their hooves will grow slower, sometimes completely stop, because the body is surging nutrients to other vital life support systems. My Ridgeback is hopeless at growing a winter coat because they are for hunting lions in Africa...he's an inside dog in winter....and you've never heard a dog whine like a cold Ridgeback..trust me.
At the begining of winter, when the humidity is higher, and the ground is still soft, there is no fire big enough to heat the house.
I'll have a fire going , and my in floor hot water heat going full blast.
By the time it reaches - 20, the water freezes out of the air, making it very dry, and a very small fire will heat a large space. Right now, my hot water heat hasn't come on since I left for Christmas, and I have to crack a window to sleep at night, it's so hot in my bedroom.
I'm also very far from the ocean, and all the lakes freeze solid, places like Toronto, or New York can never get the humidity to drop enough to simulate my environment because of Oceans or the Great Lakes.
My house is also log...once the logs warm up there is something called thermal mass...300,000 pounds of logs retain a lot of heat, and is a hell of a wind barrier.
In the dead of winter there isn't one drop of water to be found that isn't solid, unless you drill 3 feet down thru solid ice....my face, lips and hands are just as dry as if I lived in Arizona....and yes, I can get a hell of a sun burn in December.

Re: BBBB--BBBB--RRRRRRRRRR
Thank you for that information. I always wondered what you can do for the animals that you can't bring into a house or even a heated barn. It's amazing that mother nature has given them a way to protect themselves even in extreme weather as long as they have enough food and water. I know we have found many dead deer through the years. The old timers up there always said that people like to claim it is "OVER POPULATION", to get more open hunting season. They say the reality has been that we have been taking their food supply and shelter away and its has gotten to a point that it can not sustain the population. That is not exactly the picture some of the hunters want to admit to.
I'm know the other problem for people as well as animals is when we get a sudden drastic drop that will last for a while. People have not had time for their bodies to adjust it happens so quickly. I guess it's kind of the way you explained the animals and how they adjust. It can't happen over night. Discovery did a very interesting documentary as to how your body reacts to different situations, freezing, starving, no sleep. no eating etc... Our bodies can and it does shut down one part if need be to help another. It has a built in priority list. It is amazing. Of course animals and I bet many other things in our world does similar things.

Re: BBBB--BBBB--RRRRRRRRRR
I know that much of the animal feed problem is that the people feeding them can't get the feed to the animals. Snow and whatever interfears. That was very inlightening info though Syb. Well expressed and much appreciated.
