Listen Up, Girls
Last nights show, I did on Breast Cancer. I interviewed a local female musician who is a 2 time breast cancer survivor. She told me that when she was first diagnosed, her "physician" told her that she needed a double mastectomy. Fortunately, she got a second opinion and after 8 weeks of radiation, she was 100% cancer free. It did resurface 15 years later and after the same treatment, she is once again cancer free and still has the boobs that God blessed her with!

Wow! That was an aggressive approach by the first doctor, I'm so happy for her results now. Never hesitate for that second and even third opinion.

A double mastectomy , from what I understand,.. is recomended when the genetics come back positive, for the breast cancer gene...and it is very likely that it will reoccur...
Having said that, I highly doubt that those tests would have been done 15 or so years ago...Oncologists can be very agressive..and remember...they get kick backs from Kemotherapy, and Tomoxofin perscriptions...and that should be illegal here in North America.
There is a theory that if you save the breast tissue ,that the chances of it reoccuring again in the breast is higher than someplace else in the body,...so the longer you can save them, the longer you have for options that are easier on your body...you can have them removed later in life, and have them reconstructed...but that is just a theory.

Thanks Man. And Im not even following that with a smart ass remark or a joke. This lady had a story with a happy ending, fortunately. In the next couple of weeks I'm going to be doing something similar on domestic violence and another one with a Veteran who was in DC a few weeks ago and participated in removing the barriers to the Veteran's Memorial. The cool part is that the people Im interviewing on these topics are all musicians

I'd like to correct something I said earlier.....
I've HEARD several times by hospital staff,...either off duty, or retired...That the Oncologists, or the hospitals get financial kickbacks from the perscriptions...so that may not be entirely accurate information..
Also if you come back positive for hereditary breast cancer,...there is two other complications...fewer eggs in the ovaries, to try and rid the species of the genetic fault..[they know this for a fact]...and early Ovarian cancer.

Re: Listen Up, Girls
People sometimes forget that medical science is not an exact science. What your doctor says is an educated guess. It is always smart to get a second and in most cases a third opinion.your insurance is required to pay for st least the second opinion. It should be someone who has no affiliation with the first doctor. I don't even like to let them know what the first doctor says in many cases because it sometimes influences their own opinion. I know one of the biggest problem we have is that people put off going to the doctor. Many do it because they don't want to know what they already suspect.I purposely took my kids to my doctor appointments and test appointments so they would grow up thinking that its nothing to fear. My daughter goes with me to my manogram and gyno appointments. So many people tell stories that scare people into not going to get checked at all. My father died from skin cancer because he didn't get checked early even though he knew it should have been checked. My mother beged and even threatened him.By the time he went it was to late. Early detection is important.
Don't put it off.

Re: Listen Up, Girls
I think its important for every woman to get a mammogram annually, & if you have breast cancer in your family history, more often that annually. I know this is a lil off base, but back to that second opinion thing. A few yrs ago a very black, large mole appeared on my dads cheek. I told him to get it checked. When I checked on him the next week, it was even bigger. & darker. When I questioned him he said his Dr told him its nothing to worry about, just old age spot. I said bullshit, that thing is growing . So I made him a appointment with my doctor .... turned out to be early stage of melanoma. The spot was surgically removed, & a few weeks of radiation took care of it... but if not for another opinion ...
