Re: Swearing and Cursing
I look at it like, sex and love making...Swearing is something you do to antagonize while cursing is something you do when something doesn't go your way...

Re: Swearing and Cursing
I think of them as generally the same although I find that if it's casual use of a word that some feel is inappropriate people say, "they were swearing" if an angry use more people say "they were cursing". I do find that depending on were you are seems to make a difference as well. For instance, when I lived in Florida most people referred to it as swearing and those who used the word cursing said it different than we do here in NY/NJ area. We say "CURSING" and many places say "CUSSING". Most people here say Cursing unless they are in a more formal setting like a family gathering they might say swearing.

They're the same thing to me except when I say that I swear that I'll never curse again.

I think this use of curse is typically American as they would never be confused or used interchangeably here. In the UK a curse is a wish for harm to another person whereas swearing is much less specific and doesn't even have to be directed at another person (e.g. when you hit your thumb with a hammer or trap your foreskin in your zip!)

Whenever I hear an American talk about cursing I think of voodoo and witch doctors when all they are doing is saying "fuck"!
