I'm confused?
Not saying there is anything wrong with motorcycles, Dad had one for quite awhile, Brother has a Harley, know others...
Yesterday on the highway there were a couple of motorcycles on a two lane highway, on one was what I estimate to be about a seven year old passenger wearing an adult helmet.
The confusing part is, if a parents takes their children out in a car to do the shopping, to school, to a doctor appointment or whatever there are laws...40 pound children and under must be in a approved car seat, children under a certain age must be restrained with a seat belt and must be in the back seat. I think a lot of states have laws against smoking in a car with children...but did a little checking online this morning and there are really no laws about a small child passenger on a motorcycle.

Re: I'm confused?
Last summer, I saw a guy on a bike with a kid strapped backwards on the back. BACKWARDS! The kids was maybe 6 or 7. Law or no law, I called the cops.

Re: I'm confused?
It doesn't make sense to me, Social Service will stomp through your door with any complaint legit or not, child safety in a car is huge issue, child endangerment laws, child neglect laws, can't give their little behinds a little spank without facing charges but no laws for a little one on a motorcycle?

Re: I'm confused?
The other thing that gets me is the States that dont have helmet laws for bikes, but they have seat belt laws for cars. Cops will pull you over here if the passengers arent wearing seat belts

In Ohio - Seat belts are mandatory as are baby seats and booster sets for bigger kid - but no helmet required after 1 year of getting your Motorcycle endorsement on your license. The test to get that endorsement is somewhat involved - Still it makes one wonder what law makers are thinking about sometimes. Could motorcycle lobbyist be that much more vocal?

That's not so hard. The Feds gave cash to states that required seat belt use. They don't for the helmet law. Or if they do it's not a significant chucnk of change. Mich did a study about the safety for motor cyclists after the helmet law was repealed. They say it would have saved 78 lives. I didn't hear about how many of those 78 would have been seriously damaged anyway. A few in the state house are still trying to reinstate. However it will be insurance rates that dictate whether or not people use them.

Re: I'm confused?
the saying was let" those who ride decide....." ya it will protect your brain, but do ya still want to live if ya cant move and your spinal cord been cut?, we have a Friend that been like that for 20 years, and lately just hanging on.
for me we don't wear one, it had for me to turn my head with it on and hear and see, then it don't keep ya warm or dry too...i guess it could be a two way argument on the topic. from what i seen just a dot approved one, if you had a probationary license

Re: I'm confused?
What adults do is one thing, but putting such a young child on a motorcycle makes me grimace.
