Talk Around Town
Locally, this is the 10th anniversary of the "no smoking" in restaurants and bars ban. Talk radio is asking the hypothetical question of whether it's a good thing or should it go back to how things used to be. Naturally, there are many opinions for and many against.
Every time this debate comes up, the media reports how much better the businesses are doing because of the ban, but if you talk to actual owners, they disagree. I know one place in particular that I used to go to every Friday night and people were 3 deep at the bar. Since the ban, you can shoot a cannon through there and not hit a soul.
I feel that it should be up to the owners of an establishment to allow or not allow smoking at their business. Smoking is not illegal. If the owner want to operate a smoking, or non smoking business and potential patrons dont like it, it's their choice to go to some place of their liking.
My point is, it not about smoking or not smoking. I'm not for or against either. But it should be freedom of choice. Choice on behalf of the restaurants and choice on behalf of the patrons. If the State feels the need to be involved, let them sell a smoking permit or license. It's all about money anyway.

Or Vancouver ...!! You can't smoke within 50 feet of any buildings door. Or even on the property of a hospital, you see patients with their I.V. poles on the sidewalks half a mile away from the hospital.

It is that way here, you can sit in your vehicle at the hospital but can not stand on the property and smoke. They finally gave up at work and we now have a smoking area outside and do not have to go off property. We went from a smoking area to no smoking, and can not go off property, to smoking off property, to smoking area back, They were trying to get everyone to quit.

Its a personal choice and should be kept as such.
Something else that pisses me off about this is that before the total ban on smoking, restaurants and bars were required to have smoking area's with an air handling unit to dispel the smoke. Depending on the size of the place, that may have cost as much as $20K. That's a big chunk of change. And then, after being required to spend that money, the smoking ban went into place and then they took another hit financially from smokers not coming in any more. Some places chose to ignore the ban and risk getting fined because the fine was less than the business they would have lost. Again, Im not for or against smoking, but I think the business owners should be able to make their own choice, not the government

At work if you take there insurance they are trying to charge you an extra surcharge, it was said it would be $100 to $200 a month if you smoke. It was all set to go into affect but is put on hold now.
