Re: D-Day
To this very day, if a Canadian citizen visits Holland , and wishes to see the cemetary of the fallen Canadian soldiers , trainfare is free .
I also know many Canadians that have visited , and were run to the memorial by the general population , that happened to run across them at customs.
Almost all of them have commented on the amount of American and Canadian flags still flying on private property.

Re: D-Day
"D-Day, June 6th, 1944. On that one day 6,603 American military died. Another 4-thousand of our allies. They died so you could sit on the couch right now with your smartphone. They died so those kids sleeping in the other room would have freedom. They died for you and me. If you know a Vet... thank them."

Re: D-Day
The combined American, British and Canadian assault on Normandy, known as D-Day, took place 69 years ago today. Canadian soldiers dodged sniper fire as they took their assigned section of the coast - Juno Beach. Years later, a handful of surviving veterans of that battle were back to visit beautiful Normandy, to be honored.

Re: D-Day
When I was stationed in England, the thing I wanted to see the first chance I got was Normandy beach. As I stood on the cliff & looked out to the English channel, it was easy to see why we lost so many brave young men. As they jumped into the rough choppy water with a field pack weighing about 125 lbs they had to swim approximately 50 yrds to the shore. The ones that didn't drown or get shot who had to be gasping after the swim, & now have clothing that's soaked weighing even more now have a 200 yrd run to the cliff, the only place safe from the machine gun nest. The 2nd wave would have watched the initial landing force being mowed down. Very few were actually getting to the cliff wall. The 2nd wave knew they probably would be one of the dead bodies lying on the beach, but still they tried anyway. The allied landing force lost a staggering 800 men each minute. Even knowing the chance of getting to the cl8ff was almost nill, they charged. Till my last dying breath I will believe every single soldier in the landing force should at the very least, be awarded the bronze star. I'd give back every one of my military awards if the men that participated in the D-Day invasion were honored properly. I don't think many ppl could look at Omaha beach without shedding a tear

....and I personally knew one of them that was honored. He was overcome with emotion, as he relived the horrors of that day.
Ironically , I had many relatives there, Canadian, American ,and German, they were cousins, firing in anger at one another.
Later when the Russians took Berlin, I had countless relations there, and I can't recall the stories I've been told, without getting a lump in my throat, and a tear or two trying to escape. It is very seldom my family talks of what happened.
After the war, my family became refugees in the Russian allied part of Germany, and one of the families who's son fought on Juno beach, sponsored my Grandparents to immigrate to Canada.
Now that family, is honored by mine every year, they have long since passed away, but my family is now nearing 100 people, from the two Grandparents who were blessed enough, not to be sent back to Russia , where Stalin starved tens of millions of his own people to death.
