Memorial Day

Memorial Day is a United States federal holiday which occurs every year on the final Monday of May. Memorial Day is a day of remembering the men and women who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces. Formerly known as Decoration Day, it originated after the American Civil War to commemorate the Union and Confederate soldiers who died in the Civil War.

By the 20th century Memorial Day had been extended to honor all Americans who have died while in the military service. It typically marks the start of the summer vacation season, while Labor Day marks its end.

Many people visit cemeteries and memorials, particularly to honor those who have died in military service. Many volunteers place an American flag on each grave in national cemeteries.

There often is a religious service and a "dinner on the ground," the traditional term for a potluck meal in which people used to spread the dishes out on sheets or tablecloths on the grass. It is believed that this practice began before the American Civil War and thus may reflect the real origin of the "Memorial Day" idea.

Re: Memorial Day
Great post Kiss. All too often, the Holidays are taken for granted and treated as a day off without any respect for the reason the Holiday was created in the first place. Memorial Day is a lot more that having barbeques and drinking beer for the official kick off to summer. Not that there's anything wrong with celebrating. But it should be done for the right reason.

Re: Memorial Day

I find history fascinating!

"In 1864, the Charleston Race Course became a Confederate POW camp. After the war, local freedmen buried 257 Union soldiers who had died there."

"On May 1, 1865, 10,000 former slaves gathered to give the "Martyrs of the Race Course" a proper funeral. Many historians consider this event to be the first organized Memorial Day in America."

Re: Memorial Day

One more.

"Our subject this week is Major General John A. Logan (1826-1886) the founder of Memorial day which was originally known as Decoration Day because it was a time set aside to honor those lost in the nation's Civil War by decorating their graves. It was first widely observed on May 30, 1868, to commemorate the sacrifices of Civil War soldiers, by proclamation of General John A. Logan of the Grand Army of the Republic, an organization of former sailors and soldiers.

On May 5, 1868, Logan declared in General Order No. 11 that:

"The 30th of May, 1868, is designated for the purpose of strewing with flowers, or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion, and whose bodies now lie in almost every city, village, and hamlet churchyard in the land. In this observance, no form of ceremony is prescribed, but posts and comrades will in their own way arrange such fitting services and testimonials of respect as circumstances may permit."

Re: Memorial Day
I was appalled when I read the beaver city times tribune, the local newspaper, no where in that entire newspaper was memorial day mentioned. Not one thanks you to vets, no ads, memorial day, the fallen vets are not mentioned.... anywhere. A couple of young 30 ish men bought the paper about a year ago, clearly they never served in any branch of the service,, they have no concept what trials, hardships each man/ woman who serves has to face, just to be able to be called a soldier, to protect their ungrateful ass. Those that take our service for granted pisses me off to the core

I'll give them the benefit of the doubt until Monday when it is Memorial day. If they have nothing then there will be no excuse. I do think it has become more about the sales and crap like that than the spirit in which it was meant. We have become commercial when it comes to most holidays and then we celebrate them for a month instead of a day. Maybe that's what these guys are trying to do is bring back the spirit. Let us know what happens Monday when the paper comes out.

Re: Memorial Day
Its a weekly paper...( small town) so if memorial day was gonna be mentioned, it would have been in the paper I mentioned. But I believe my letter to the editor will make them take notice of my disgust. They may not even print it, in hopes of sweeping it under the rug

Re: Memorial Day
i may be a little here, but even some of the young vets have no respect for fallen veterans. whether they were KIA or not. my dad served in WWII and was a life long member of the VFW and Legion. when he passed in 1992, his VFW post didn't want to send any honor or color guards to the funeral service, because it was held at 11:00 am, and that meant they would have to get up @ 8:30 to get everything ready to be there on time (we moved bout an hour away from the post, and dad never changed to the local post because he had a lot of friends there, and mom and dad revisited often). the post was being run by a bunch of Gulf Coast vets at the time. boy did they get their asses chewed by the senior members of the post, yet they still didn't send anyone. a bunch of my dads friends came out on their own to honor my dad.

I would be writing a letter to the editor, and on their Facebook page, Twitter and another social media they likely use to promo their paper. They need to hear what REALLY matters. Maybe we should write a letter from WN!!
Veterans are not forgotten by all - some of us thank god for them everyday.

.
. Thank you, its nice to have people who know freedom isn't free. I spent 22 yrs in the Air Force, even though I've never been in a combat situation, I'm still proud of my service. ( My job was to fly into unfriendly foriegn airspace, to see how long it took them to send some jets up after me or try to shoot me down)

Re: Memorial Day
NRG,SYB, and anyone else that served or had family that served. I hope you know there are people that do appreciate what you have given up for the rest of us.I know where I live we have a lot of young guys that are military and It disgusts me that they tell me they still run into those who do things that spit on them and worse.I have had family and friends in the military and I have seen the toll it takes. I personally don't know how the families that deal with it every day when its immediate family handle it.I feel the same about cops, fireman and other first responders.

You guys are a special breed.I do think that most of us do appreciate what you do, even if we don't say it nearly as often as we should.I wish as a country we treated you better emotionally, physically, monetarily and any other way we could. I almost wish we didn't have all the sales and other commercial things that go with the holiday because I believe it takes away from what it is about. All I can do is say I, and my family do appreciate you and thank you for your service more than words can express. Those who chose not to appreciate and thank you have that right, and should thank you for at least protecting that right for them.
