Chinese? don't go for chop Sui and all that kind of stuff, can remember dad bring that stuff home in little whit cartons when i was a kid... i know i use to eat fish way back when but something killed my taste for it....

Re: dining
I make homemade eggrolls. Hubby convinces everyone to try them. Especially people who tell him they don't like eggrolls. They always come back for more. Sometimes a little sheepishly. Until Hubby admits he wont even try them. lol

Re: dining
Where from?

Egg rolls are from mainland China, and many Chinese-speaking regions of Asia, and Chinese immigrant communities around the world.

Re: dining
when you go out to eat, if you get the best food you've ever had? do you tip the cook? or the server? and how much? i made a chef salad for a customer tonight. i stepped out front to get a drink, he stopped me, and told me that i made the best he'd ever had. then he handed me a $20 bill. so, in essence, he paid $30 for a salad. on top of his drinks, and the other food that his party ordered. i mean, i can understand a buck or two, maybe even five. but i'm pretty sure that the total bill for all three in his group was around $45. so, my 20, plus the bartender/server got $10. that's over half the original bill in tips!

Re: dining
Tipping is supposed to be for extra ordinary effort weather it be on the server , the chef , the bus boy etc.. I try not to go to places that "automatically add the tip" I figure if I get bad service I wind up over paying that way and If I get great service the people who deserve a great tip are getting cheated that way. I will tip very well if the service warrants it and not at all if the service warrants it. I resent people that think they deserve a tip no matter what they do.If you do a horrible job you should not get a tip. Most restaurants/bars have a set up so that the server gets tipped and a percentage goes to the bus boys or bar backs and bartenders.Chefs in most restaurants are paid well and are presumed to cook well (or you wouldn't want them to work for you) so don't normally get tips. Bartenders, bus boys, bar backs and waiters are not even paid minimum wage in most places.Of course you do have the patron who just wont tip no mater what but you still can not say anything. It is your job to serve them and they are only REQUIRED to pay the purchase price and tax unless otherwise posted. Even when posted it has gone to court about whether a tip can be forced just because you say it on your menu. Many places only do it for large parties.

I have never known a great waiter, bartender, bus boy, bar back or anyone else who works for tips that likes the set tip thing. If they are good or great they don't want to have their customer told what to tip and they don't want to pool tips either (Not having anything to do with the part that a bartender, bus boy or bar back gets. Pooling is when the people who work there all pool the tips and they get split based on what position you held.). They make more money based on how the costumers choose to tip based on the service. If I made $300 and the other bartender made $75 because they suck why would I want to pool my tips?I speak from a lot of experience.

It is called a gratuity for a reason.

I over tip at times, like 25% or even 50%, if I have it. I have friends who shake their head at me, and they make more money than I do.

And, the gentleman paid $10 for his salad, and $20. gratuity to someone who performed his job to his finest.

Re: dining
I think it's great that the bartender acknowledged it was you who earned it. That is rare.

By the way, I know custom is to NOT tip the owner even if the owner is the person preforming the service. I understand why that is the custom but I have a hard time not tipping when I think someone earns it.I also understand that in some cases if an owner is performing the service you might be paying a premium for that service. Example a hair stylist who owns the salon. But isn't the point that you go to that person because you want that persons expertise? If they do a good job then I still tip.I wonder if most people stick to the old custom these days or not? I also wonder what the standard tipping level is in your area. In NY/NJ area its 17-20% depending how upscale the place. (That's average)
