Will You Be My Valentine ?
Origins of Valentine's Day: A Pagan Festival in February
While some believe that Valentine's Day is celebrated in the middle of February to commemorate the anniversary of Valentine's death or burial--which probably occurred around A.D. 270--others claim that the Christian church may have decided to place St. Valentine's feast day in the middle of February in an effort to "Christianize" the pagan celebration of Lupercalia. Celebrated at the ides of February, or February 15, Lupercalia was a fertility festival dedicated to Faunus, the Roman god of agriculture, as well as to the Roman founders Romulus and Remus.
To begin the festival, members of the Luperci, an order of Roman priests, would gather at a sacred cave where the infants Romulus and Remus, the founders of Rome, were believed to have been cared for by a she-wolf or lupa. The priests would sacrifice a goat, for fertility, and a dog, for purification. They would then strip the goat's hide into strips, dip them into the sacrificial blood and take to the streets, gently slapping both women and crop fields with the goat hide. Far from being fearful, Roman women welcomed the touch of the hides because it was believed to make them more fertile in the coming year. Later in the day, according to legend, all the young women in the city would place their names in a big urn. The city's bachelors would each choose a name and become paired for the year with his chosen woman. These matches often ended in marriage.
Hmmmm, "marriage" equals ended.......?!

Sooooo..to be an ancient Valentine, I've gotta walk thru a cave inhabited by wolves..
no problem.
Sacrifice a goat...no problem, but I'm not killing a dog !
Then slap women with bloody goat hide ..to make them fertile..
no problem.
..and I'll find an urn someplace,[ I'll check Craigslist..]
no problem.
Then co-habitate for a year..[ my Mom won't mind ]
no problem
So after fighting thru wolves, and smeared with goats blood, no wonder they have to pick random names.

The day was first associated with romantic love in the circle of Geoffrey Chaucer in the High Middle Ages, when the tradition of courtly love flourished. By the 15th century, it had evolved into an occasion in which lovers expressed their love for each other by presenting flowers, offering confectionery, and sending greeting cards known as "valentines".
Valentine's Day symbols that are used today include the heart-shaped outline, doves, and the figure of the winged Cupid. Since the 19th century, handwritten valentines have given way to mass-produced greeting cards.
Let's not forget chocolate !!!!!

Who is Cupid??
Throughout ancient mythological writing, there appear to be either two Cupids or two sides to the figure of Cupid. One is the son of Mars (Ares) and Venus (Aphrodite). He is a lively youth who delights in pranks and spreading love. The other is a son of Nyx and Erebus, known for riotous debauchery.

Thousands of people all across the USA send valentines to the post office in Valentine Nebraska just so it will have the Valentine postmark. So many are mailed from there that they suggest mailing them a week early to insure they get to the intended destination on time

You mean your not getting a card from Kiss or Chazzy ?
I already got one from a young 18 year old girl, that canceled her membership here a short time ago, as you may remember...when I opened it up..it blew smoke in my face, and it said "eat shit and die" then it carried on for a pragraph or two about how cool Facebook is , and how she's perfected rolling a joint with one hand ,and typing with the other, blah ,blah, blah...not very submissive of her.

In the Middle Ages, young men and women drew names from a bowl to see who their valentines would be. They would wear these names on their sleeves for one week. To wear your heart on your sleeve now means that it is easy for other people to know how you are feeling.
Richard Cadbury invented the first Valentines Day candy box in the late 1800s.
The oldest surviving love poem till date is written in a clay tablet from the times of the Sumerians around 3500 BC.
In Medieval times, girls ate unusual foods on St Valentine's Day to make them dream of their future husband.

Valentine
A valentine is a person that you want to spend every day with, especially valentines day. If you dont spend valentines day with your valentine (for example, if it was your sister's birthday and you were forced to go see her and not the girl that you really wanted to see) you would be a wreck trying to find ways to apologise to that "special someone" and trying to think of exactly what would be the right thing to say.
Then you might end up doing something strange like posting something on a website at 4 in the morning to try to show that person you care. Then after reading what you put on the website, that person may think you're completely insane and never talk to you again. Or they could make your day. We'll see what happens.
