Ive had a ton of cats fur years, get it fur, fur. Can I be more lame!? Never asked before, I can easily Google it, but just wanna see if others know it, what the hell, just trying to come up with my stupid, bat crap crazy stuff, to help things roll. So come on kids, jump in, and humor me. Cool?

Re: Why do cats purr?
Maybe because they are called pussies.
I've a barncat that wags his tail like a dog, and when I'm saddling up one of the horses he jumps up on the saddle , curls up and purrs.
I was told once that they purr when content.

Thats kindawhat Ive heard. But my cats always seem to not be that way. But I seem to get the same sense, just because I feed them well, and well, keep thier litter clean, and give them a comfortable, friendly place to sleep, which, like tonight, one on my lap, one snuggling next to my thigh sleepping, not purring. Does that mean, they are not content, or, they are just sucking up to a food delivery device? They stick to me like glue.

Re: Why do cats purr?
I don't think they purr when asleep, and you are their food source. I know they are independant, and if they do something stupid, they act as if nothing happened, but some cats LOVE people, and they have been with us since the egyptians.
I was told that when they rub their face on you they are marking their territory with scent glands, I don't believe that for a second...it's a sign of affection from an animal that truly believes that we belong to them...and not the other way around.
I do find them interesting, and have studied large cats, ..mountain lions,.. for some time..people call them ghosts ,because you never see them. Once you learn that they don't use game trails but parallel the trail about 12 feet away, you start to see their sign. They also hunt in pairs alot, and will walk in each others foot steps leaving only one set of tracks in the snow. I've also seen a 110 lb. cat drag a 180 lb. deer 25 feet into a tree , and defend it with it's life.
I've been forced to kill them on many occasions and their heartbeat is so fast they die within seconds...and their stare at a few feet away is paralizing to most, but you can break the predatory response, even at a dead run toward you, with a loud sharp noise, or yell...thats why dogs can tree them...but if the dog stops barking...bye bye puppy...he'll come down and kill 3 or 4 hunting dogs.
I like cats big and small because they are fair, treat em good and they'll sleep next to your leg and purr..piss em off ,and they turn their back and spray all over your coffee table. The big cats...If they leave me alone ,I respectfully, will do the same.

Re: Why do cats purr?
Purring is suppose to be a sign of affection. If they did it while they sleep, it'd be snoring. Congrats on figgering out the mountain lions Syb. Fascinating creatures

Re: Why do cats purr?
Cats purr for many reasons and have different purrs . Same with the meow. They said that the studies show that cats will meow or purr in certain ways to get our attention weather it be for affection or even in distress. They say that a distress meow is almost identical to baby in distress crying. Which is different from I'm hungry or I want a little attention. Some other things are why they bring us mice or other things that they catch. Cats seem to think we are bad hunters. They are proud they caught the thing then they also love us and on top of it they want us to have it because we can't get it our self so they drop it in front of us or on our pillow or whatever and expect us to praise them.

You don't need any help with your ideas...

Syb, Laugh all you want I got hurt from that stupid incident. I think I am the only person that can fuck up their arm from their cat dropping a mouse. No lie I whacked my elbow and my whole arm has been killing me since then. I can't lift anything or open anything. So strange. I refuse to go to a doctor and tell him I fucked up my arm because I'm freaked out by mice! I hope it gets better soon or I will have no choice but to go and I will have to make up a story because I know he will laugh if I tell him the truth.

I am sorry about your arm...you right or left handed ? You may have to take it easy with it for awhile..no sharp ,or rapid up and down motions, for the next two months..if you know what I mean. Just make Kam do all the work.
