what's wrong with society today?
a mother gave birth to a daughter recently. she named her Hashtag. strange, yes. but everyone seems to hate it. i read it in an article on Yahoo news. here's a reply that someone posted that sums up my feelings as well...
come on people, i think the name is perfectly fine, it's a unique name. it's a better name than a generic name like Michelle, or Sandra. you people are what's wrong with this world today. something a little different, and everyone gets so upset over it. it's no wonder the children will tease her in school, because their parents teach then to make fun of something different. if it's not a name, it's weight related, or racial, or the color of their hair. people need to grow up and accept others for who they are, and not what they name thier child!

um, like that will happen.
btw Sandra, was a poor choice. I get the sentiment, but my daughter was named after her grandmother.
and i'm pretty sure the sandys and chelles already on the site are going to give you a beat down

I knew a young lady once that was named "Dagmar", the thing was she was so incredibley hot ,you didn't care if her name didn't exactally role off your tongue....she went into the entertainment business, reporting news, here in British Columbia ...and didn't change her name.
People will always find something about someone to distract attention away from their own insecurities, something that has always escaped my understanding.

So, so agree with people accepting others for who they are. I worked at a school that had children with very unique names but these kids were just that kids learning their identities. It isn't about names is about who you are on the inside and how you treat others. Tolerance, we are all unique in our own ways be it a name or whatever.

that's my point. i know a lot of Sandra's and Michelle's because it's a "generic" name (meaning that it is a name used by many people for their daughters) and i'm not singling those names out for any specific reason, i could have said Bill, John, or David too...

Re: what's wrong with society today?
The thing for me is...Hashtag is just not a very pretty name.
A unique pretty name or a name with some deep special meaning, I get it.
I never understood the trend of naming girls Tequilia either.

Re: what's wrong with society today?
I think there was a big uproar awhile back when a child was given the name "Hitler".
I have a friend who chose this name;
Dagen \d(a)- gen\ as a boy's name is a variant of Dargan (Irish), and the meaning of Dagen is "black-haired".
Although, his daughter has blonde hair and brown eyes?

Re: what's wrong with society today?
Celebrities have been doing that shit for years. Moon Unit and Dweezil Zappa, Zowie Bowie and Wolfie Van Halen, just to name a few. What parents need to consider when they're hanging a label on their precious new born is how they may be harrassed because of it when they get in school. We all know how cruel kids can be. And every generation goes through the "pop" names of the time. When I was in school, every guy was a Mike, Dave, Bob or Jim and every girl was a Debbie, Sue, Mary or Kim. Another generation was all Jacob, Joshua and Jeremy with Ashleigh, Stephanie and Miranda. It's generally cyclical and some are just plain strange

Re: what's wrong with society today?
I grew up having a name that was never spelled or said correctly except by my close friends and family. I happen to love my name. Although I remember when it was popular to have things with your name on it and I could never have them because they didn't make them with my name. The only way to ever get something with my name was to have it custom made.
I like unique names but I feel you should think when you name your child. The world can be a cruel place. Unique is fine but don't give your child a name that you know will get them into fights every other day after school. I know I thought about my kids names and their initials before I made the final choice.I also thought about what the names might be shortened to or can be made into.As parents you don't want to do anything to make your child's life more difficult. Unfortunately we can't change the world over night to be a kinder gentler world.
As far as how people are treated we should all raise our children to be kind to others but we are lucky if parents take the time to have dinner with their kids. Partly due to peoples busier lifestyles and partly due to poor parenting skills children have not been taught the basics that were taught years ago. One of my biggest pet peeves about younger people these days is that they don't acknowledge things. Example: At the end of a phone call say "Thank you" or "OK" or "talk to you later" or anything that establishes the conversation is over. Many kids just hang up. On the plane the other night the steward said something to me. I answered him and he didn't reply he just turned around. The proper thing would be to acknowledge that he heard me with some form of statement or gesture.Kids are not taught basic manners anymore. Please and thank you should be automatic. How can you expect for them to know how to treat people in life if they are never given the tools.

I hear ya. I have only met one other with my name, hers was spelled differently. Mispronunciations constantly, have gotten used to it over the years.
Like you when I named my children I thought of initials and all that, their last name is difficult so their first and middle names are simple.
Unlike a lot of parents these days I have taught my children to be respectful and to acknowledge when they are spoken to. Common courtesy and manners don't seem to be taught to kids theses days, is sad.

Re: what's wrong with society today?
A 15-year-old is suing the Icelandic state for the right to legally use the name given to her by her mother. The problem? Blaer, which means "light breeze" in Icelandic, is not on a list approved by the government.
Like a handful of other countries, including Germany and Denmark, Iceland has official rules about what a baby can be named. In a country comfortable with a firm state role, most people don't question the Personal Names Register, a list of 1,712 male names and 1,853 female names that fit Icelandic grammar and pronunciation rules and that officials maintain will protect children from embarrassment. Parents can take from the list or apply to a special committee that has the power to say yea or nay.
Interesting.... ?!
