Progress...??
Remember when your Mothers all smoked and drank, and you could actually tell who was ,or wasn't a hooker.. by just the way they dressed..
..or when a T.V. screen was so small you now think you had the first iphone ,but it was in the early 80's,and it weighed 30 pounds, and smoked like a diesel truck if you used it for more than a hour.
Remember when we all drank from a TAP ! and didn't have to purchase water.
With all this technology around to entertain the kids, does any Father take his son anymore ,to the local dump with his pellet gun ,to shoot rats ? I mean you didn't have a childhood if you didn't know at least a couple kids with a glass eye ,from a pellet gun injury.
Have we progressed ? Are things really better ? Or are we told they are,...and just believe.

Re: Progress...??
Very insightful Syb. Yes, I remembee when I was a kid, used to have to walk all across the room, to change channels. And I think we had 2, maybe 3 choices. Back in the day, Vancouver, Wa., my brother, couple friends, and I, could leave the house in the morning, go into the thickets, spend the whole day playing, and eating all the crap that grew wild, fruits etc. But if we think way back to my farmer history, when you grew your own food, no electricity, plumbing, etc., now those were some tough old birds.

Re: Progress...??
The answer to your question Syb, in my opinion, no, we are not better off. There are a few things that are good, microwaves, satalite tv (which I rarely watch). Thats about it for me, but I love my toaster oven, lol. Again, being born into poverty, was great. Some of our dinners were 2 pieces of bread and flour gravy, rice with sugar and cinnamon. I just recently thanked my 86 year old mother, for doing the best she could, and keeping my sorry ass alive.

Re: Progress...??
Progress? Just heard mention automobile electronics. My first car was a 47 Chevy, 3 speed on the column. Yes, it was older than me. Got it when I was 14 with money I earned in a tire store. 50 bucks. So my last car, a Saab, had electronics, like operating the fuel injectors. Point is, all the cars back in the day I had, a hand full tools, bailing wire, electical tape. Break down, jump out, fix it on the side of the road, drive away. Electronics are a handicap to me. Thats regression, and bullshit. Gee, you wonder why I havent had a car in 12 plus years? I cant be bothered by the aggrivation, or the expense.

Re: Progress...??
Thats right...I know my life is unusual, I built this place with a saw and axe. When I go to Vancouver , all the men are these "Metrosexuals", and I don't fit in, men won't hold a conversation with me, although the women do, if they arn't texting on their iphones. I look around that city, and feel its impersonal, people are caught up in twittering, or just trying to move around, not really knowing where they are, or where they are going.

Re: Progress...??
Really? Do you really think everyone is that bad and all kids(everyone under 30) are that lazy. Do you really believe technology is that bad?

I love technology and my kids and I use it all. I blame much of what we see on lazy parents. My kids ages 26, 23, 17 are very into all the new and innovative things we have but they also do many things I did as a kid. They bike ride, mountain bike, water and snow ski, they walk to many places, they go camping and SCUBA diving and swimming and mountain climbing and get together with friends for football games etc.. They also text, email, play video games use computers for everything from homework to video calling friends. They use computers to save money, spend money and even earn money.

I think what people forget to do in life is balance things. Yes our cars are a pain in the ass if they need to be fixed in modern times but the are also more cost effective and have better gas mileage. If we built cars the way we used to no one could afford them.Yes things don't last as long but again it what we demanded as consumers. We want the new best, newest thing 10 minutes after we bought the thing we have. So do you really want a VCR to last 20 years when they don't even make VCR tapes anymore in 20 years? You can still buy furniture that will last 35 years but you will pay for that quality and most people wont. Besides we are a disposable society and we want to throw out the living room furniture in 10 years and get all new stuff so why spend $20,000 for a living room set that will last 30 years when you can buy something that will only last 10 years for $2,000.

Bottled water is because of 2 reasons. 1)You drink bottled water for it's convenience and you didn't feel like washing out your own water bottle and filling it or you can't because of whatever reason.2)You drink bottled water because you believe it's better and healthier for you. We don't have water fountains everywhere anymore and those that do exist are gross. Most people would never drink from Bottles. We have been brain washed to believe (although its not true)that bottled water is clean and safe. Why wouldn't you drink out of your own bottle instead of sharing some disgusting water fountain that 1,000 other people slobbered and god knows what else all over?

Newbs...The rumour going around isn't true...I DO know the difference between a water fountain and a urinal. I still hate technology, but your talking to a guy that builds houses with an axe , chainsaw, and chisel,...oh and I don't have a phone, which really pisses people off alot.

Re: Progress...??
You have an 8 track player? I've got a bunch of 8 track tapes, but nothing to play them with. What a dumb ass invention they were. To have to hear the clicking sound when it would switch tracks right in the middle of a song and then listen to it resume on the next track. And whats worse is that I was dumb enough to buy them.

Without the technology behind the 8-track we'd never of had the the VCR. Can you imagine, without the annoyance of the songs changing track, you'd be watching a movie on your VCR and in the middle of the chase scene it would wind-down and fade out so it could change tracks?! I for one would not like that, "You?" "This is a 44. The most powerful handgun in...click click click...the world. Do you feel lucky, well do you...Punk!"...

I had this stinking job where we were to be so dedicated and driven we were taught to minimize our keystrokes. I still think about this all the time. I am worried about my keystrokes while others are fucking off.

Re: Progress...??
To me the biggest annoyance was that we went to computers to "reduce paper use" but because so many of my bosses were computer challenged they would have us do the hand written version of the schedule, we would then turn that in to traffic department who would enter it then they would print the schedule out in several copies to give to everyone even though it was all in the computer system. So now we had the file with the paper version, the back up file with another paper version, the original paper version that I had done off the contract that was both on paper and in the computer and then the clients printed version. IT WAS SO STUPID!Of course there were computer hard drives with the info as well as back up drives and an off site backup as well. So all we really did was kill more trees and create extra work.I really think they missed the whole point and needed to trust in the technology a bit more. The one boss that understood and loved technology never made us do all that. He just said "Make sure you back up"
