Re: East coast
Just to fill some of you in... Many of us still have no power , phones, internet etc... Even the cell towers are fewer than normal but getting better. Unfortunately some things that were thought to be rumor tuned out to be true . Many of the people that have come to help have been sent back because they are not union. The other issues are the amount of trees and polls down as well as shortage of parts.Looting an issue in many areas although they are trying to get that under control. My neighborhood seems fine but I have been told there were some problems . I have to go by what I'm told being I am not in my home. The shelters are pretty full. The barrier Islands got hit the worst and at least 14,000 homes are not even livable at this time and we have been told they wont be for 6-8 months and that does not include the mainland areas.I had no flood damage. Mine are electrical and roof as well as other wind damage as far as I am able to see so far. I went there tonight to check and most people around me have the power back but my street does not. We think it might be due to the fact that we all had explosions or fires in our electrical systems. We are only guessing. The transformer on my corner was shooting firework type sparks and fire the night of the storm and all the wires had to be cut. AT least what was left of them. The electric company said they hope to have most of my neighborhood back on line by Wed.Nov. 7. Cable said they don't know when and phone company said the same thing. At least as far as I know they did not cut the gas to my house although we shut it for safety reasons.
I don't know where the others that have not signed on are but at least I know that the death rate was very low considering the damage that was done. I believe it was 22 last I heard so that is encouraging news. Most people are still trying to get whatever they can out of their houses . I believe as of tomorrow anyone needing to go to the areas that have been named as areas to dangerous to go to can register for a permit to go home at a certain time with a police escort to gather up anything they can if the house is standing and safe enough to go in. The entire gas delivery system in the barrier islands needs to be rebuild as does many other things that are part of the infrastructure.I know the Seaside bridge was condemned I don't know about the others. Schools are closed until at least Nov. 12 in our area and Georgian Court University is taking it day by day but I know they still don't have power and are closed at least Mon. and Tues. Rutgers University sent me an E-mail saying that most of the dorms are back on but there are a few still without power. I know my brother in North Jersey still has no power and my other brother on Long Island still has no power.Atlantic City Casinos are back on line. However the area is a mess. Now they are calling for a nor-easter on Wed. so that could stop everything for a couple of days again.

Re: East coast
OK so here is the latest.I most likely will be out of my house for months. The electrical is a mess and most things are not working.New roof most likely. New sky lights most likely, new fridge and furnace most likely. All TV's, cable boxes and electronics are shot and even the phones are shot. And I am one of the lucky ones compared to many. The insurance company listed my house as uninhabitable.
Yes the next storm is on it's way. They are evacuating more areas as we speak. The storm is supposed to hit in the morning and end sometimes Thursday. Many places are still in the dark and the places that have been fixed are not up to the normal standards so they expect many to go back into the dark including my area.60+MPH winds and flooding again.
I'm trying to be positive but I have to admit I'm pissed and I want to go home and want to go back to normal and feeling completely sorry for myself.

Re: East coast
Thanks I'm having my good and bad moments. So many people I know lost so much more than I did. In my head I know I am lucky. You can't imagine what I am seeing some of these people go through.I am trying to remember that every time I start losing it a little.I know if I just sleep one night I will handle the next day better but am afraid to take the sleeping pills when dealing with this right now. I was going to give in tonight but it's to late now. Tomorrow I will take it. I just need to get so much done. I don't know where to start and its getting so cold and I hurt more when its cold so I have to figure out a way to warm up so I can get to my house and start doing all I have to do over there. Cold or not I have things I have to do.Now everyone is afraid our pipes will freeze. If that happens I will just be a total loss. I have a crawl space with almost no insulation and with no heat at all or water running for the next month or more I can't see how the pipes would not freeze.
The insurance company wants me to take pictures of everything and list it. Including all the food we are throwing out. So spoiled or not It has to be documented. The cold is a good thing in this case because it is so cold in the house at least its like refrigeration and keeping the smell to a minimal. They wont pick up until Friday or maybe not even then with this storm. So we are all a bit hesitant to put food out because it will attract animals and we have enough with out it. I definitely would rather not invite rats to join the neighborhood party.
And FEMA is giving out water and ice but were supposed to be at several locations to have people sign up, but are just not showing up from what we are being told. The trucks are there but no people to sign us up and answer questions. Lack of information is becoming an issue for many people. I spoke to some great guys from Verizon today who really did so much to try to help me out. They had told me some stories about the things that they are dealing with and I worry about some of these guys. They say some of the people are getting nasty with them and demanding they do things that they just can't do.Now with the Nor-easter coming in they will have to stop work all together in the field.Things are getting ugly.People are tired and frustrated but they are taking it out on the wrong people. And maybe if our Governor would spend more time getting us resources instead of posing for pictures we could get things done here. He made sure the casinos got open then we never heard a fucking thing again.Except for his bullshit on TV.If you want to see whats really happening check out the local "Patch" online papers for some of the areas around here. Or jump on FB and see the NJ hurricane people that are locals posting on FB. Staten Island, Long Island and Queens are a mess as well. Even parts of Brooklyn. This really did a number on the east cost. I thought we learned something from the New Orleans disaster but many of the same issues are happening here. Just not as catastrophic, fortunately.I can't imagine what New Orleans people felt like on the scale they were dealing with.

Re: East coast
Newbs.....find your main water shut off in your basement, and turn it off, then find your lowest point of water drainage, and open it....buy some non-toxic R.V. anti freeze and dump it in your empty toilet tanks ,and plunge most of the water out of the bowl ,and dump some down your sink drains. Open the top lever relief valve on your H.W. tank, you won't drain all the water but you may keep the damage from the ice to a minimum. Get the -50 anti freeze ,it's red in colour, I use that stuff here , and it works. You probably won't save your dishwasher, or clothes washer, but at least you may not have to rip walls out to replace pipes. If you have a freind with a compressor you can blow the lines out, then put your antifreeze in, and it's a sure thing,if any water is left anywhere it will mix and dilute the anti-freeze, and will go to a slush, but won't burst pipes.........and don't drink your well water!!
