Sandy is starting to look like a real BITCH!
So there is a hurricane Sandy. She sounds so sweet and Innocent with that name. Well things can be so deceiving. The weather service is telling us to be prepared where I live for a "STORM OF HISTORIC PROPORTIONS" Really?
They are saying if this storm goes the track they think it will we at the Jersey Shore can get at best... huge amounts of rain, wind blah, blah blah that goes with the hurricane thing. But here is the twist. They said "at best" that is what we should get! Because there is a massive cold front that Sandy is supposed to slam into so we could get 30+ inches of SNOW! The good news is it is not supposed to hit until Sunday so my son might get the bars last big bash before they storm hits and hopefully pack up the bar for the season a bit early but hopefully with everyone safe and sound and with no damage.
GGRRR Last year we got a huge storm for Halloween and it seems it will be happening again but even bigger. They said overnight it has gotten bigger and stronger and hit Cuba as a level 3. They are just reporting this storm collision of the hurricane and the cold front as an "atmosphere bomb"
OK as I said two years ago...Whoever pissed off mother nature APOLOGIZE!!

Re: Sandy is starting to look like a real BITCH!
Could a Hurricane Sandy, winter storm hybrid worse than the "Perfect Storm" of 1991 slam the East Coast just in time to ruin both Halloween and Election Day?
Some meteorologists have grown increasingly concerned, as Hurricane Sandy made landfall Thursday in Cuba and already turned deadly in the Caribbean.
Politico asked on Wednesday if perhaps Hurricane Sandy would be "the next climate wake-up call" as climate change will cause storms to become increasingly
intense.
Much of the U.S. East Coast has a good chance of getting blasted by gale-force winds, flooding, heavy rain and maybe even snow early next week by an unusual
hybrid of hurricane and winter storm, federal and private forecasters say.
Though still projecting several days ahead of Halloween week, the computer models are spooking meteorologists. Government scientists said Wednesday the storm has
a 70 percent chance of smacking the Northeast and mid-Atlantic.
Hurricane Sandy in the Caribbean, an early winter storm in the West, and a blast of arctic air from the North are predicted to collide, sloshing and parking over
the country's most populous coastal corridor starting Sunday. The worst of it should peak early Tuesday, but it will stretch into midweek, forecasters say.
It is likely to hit during a full moon when tides are near their highest, increasing coastal flooding potential. And with some trees still leafy and the potential
for snow, power outages could last to Election Day, some meteorologists fear. They say it has all the earmarks of a billion-dollar storm.
"The Perfect Storm only did $200 million of damage and I'm thinking a billion," said Jeff Masters, meteorology director of the private service Weather Underground.
The biggest question mark is snow, and that depends on where the remnants of Sandy turn inland. The computer model that has been leading the pack in predicting the hybrid storm has it hitting around Delaware. But another model has the storm hitting closer to Maine. If it hits Delaware, the chances of snow increase in that region. If it hits farther north, chances for snow in the mid-Atlantic and even up to New York are lessened, Masters said.
Good luck with changing the weather.

Re: Sandy is starting to look like a real BITCH!
They seem to be following this as if its a storm you would see coming in tomorrow. One local forecaster said its because this is a storm people need to be prepared for. So they say that even though this could turn out to be nothing , although unlikely, that people should get whatever they need and put away furniture etc. They are saying that if we at the Jersey Shore get a direct hit which is still to early to tell or but they are saying the chances are getting higher and they are hoping the more likely hit would be closer to Rhode Island or somewhere in between(Although my son went to school in Rhode Island and I don't think they would fair well especially having to figure out what to do with the unimaginable amount of college students they have.)we could have damage like we have never seen. This area just wasn't built to handle big storms. OK, I never said the powers at be were the brightest! A few inches of snow cripples this area for days or more. I live in the "Pinelands" Do I really have to tell you what challenges that brings? They also have no equipment or money to deal with storms like these. They don't even have people if they had the equipment. We tend to use many volunteers for big things around here. Many boyscout troops have been big parts of rescue efforts down here. Even worse is that we have almost 80% seniors in this town. That becomes a major issue in bad events. It never fails that you hear stories of seniors that freeze or starve to death because they were afraid or couldn't afford to turn the heat on and they had no way to get out for food or get to a shelter. This is one storm I hope turns out to be a lot about nothing.

Re: Sandy is starting to look like a real BITCH!
Last June we had a derecho near DC. (A derecho is a widespread, long-lived, straight-line windstorm that is associated with a fast-moving band of severe thunderstorms.) Winds gusted between 65-79 mph. We didn't need a hurricane for the power to be out for 4 days. I wonder how long we'll be without power this time. The electric company here is rated as one of the worst in the country. Wish me luck. And good luck to everyone else in the storm's path.

Re: Sandy is starting to look like a real BITCH!
Actully Kiss you bring up a good point. Maybe I can stock up on ice when my son closes up and if we lose power then I will have ice for a few days. I have coolers that have kept ice up to 4 days. I also need to stock water. I have a well. If I lose power I lose water as well.
That means filling the tub and whatever else we can find to have water to flush toilets and also need drinking water so lots of gallon jugs filled.I have food and stuff for the cat and his cage in case we have to get out as well as any emergency supplies and important documents. Having kids in scouting has helped us to prepare for things like this.
The latest reports are saying that it looks more and more likely to be a direct hit into Ocean county NJ . That's were we are.I hope all the people on the islands here listen when they are told to get off the islands or they wont be able to once the flooding starts. If you can't get over the bridges or use a car because it's underwater you are just going to have to ride it out. I have seen houses down here wash into the ocean with less of a storm than what they are calling for.I seriously hope they are all wrong on this storm. All those in its path Stay safe and keep us posted if you can. I think our issue is unique because its not the same storm that we are going to get because we are supposed to get Sandy to then combine with an arctic front and high tides as well. They keep saying this will be historic. gggrrr Arizona is looking pretty good right now.

Re: Sandy is starting to look like a real BITCH!
Its going to be really bad here....We are in its direct path. GGRRR It's pissing me off now. Everything is shutting down ahead of this mess. The worst is supposed to be tomorrow night at high tide. There will be 4 high tides through this storm Some areas are already flooded due just to the tides. My one son will be evacuated. My brothers will most likely lose power as well as us. One brother has a generator but it will still be bad. If we lose power for as long as they are estimating which is 10 days this will suck a lot!All the barrier islands and people right on the water have evacuated.Atlantic City, Cape May and Seaside just to name a few..I am one block in from where they are saying they KNOW will be flooded.Waves are 18 feet high and water is already up to the boardwalk.Once I know ALL my kids and their animals are safe I will decide if I am leaving and where we will go.
If I didn't actually have to live through this, it would be really interesting to watch. The water looks like something out of a movie and the storm hasn't even hit yet. The wind is starting to really blow and the sky is dark . It looks like exactly what you want for a scary movie scene...All we need is someone to cue the scary music and Vincent Price Voice Over.
I love what the Governor said, (Wow I never thought I would say that)He said "To those who are staying in evacuated areas because I was wrong last time,,,Yeah you can stay to prove me wrong or you might prove me right and die! or you can leave. The choice is yours"

To everyone else dealing with this mess I hope you all stay safe as well.

Re: Sandy is starting to look like a real BITCH!
I would gladly give you more than half this water OOMG. They are calling this a "hybrid storm" because its a bunch of different things combined. Its a hurricane and a nor'easter with an arctic front and as the weather guy put it " A bunch of other weather terms thrown in". Many areas here were flooded before the rain even started and hours before the high tide. Tomorrow evening at high tide will be the real test and looks like I will at least be in the same house as one son and his girlfriend and my daughter the 2 cats and the dog so if we have to evac to the shelter or somewhere else we will be together. My other son is getting a fucking BLIZZARD from this! I am so sick of weather updates I had to watch HBO GO so I could get a brake. They have said the shelters don't have room for everyone so please only come if you are in the mandatory evacuation areas. I am one block past that.I took a shower and tried to sleep but I only slept for a few minutes. I hate being tired and not being able to sleep. At least we still have power, cable etc..

Re: Sandy is starting to look like a real BITCH!
I had to evacuate my house there were explosions inside and outside. There are explosions all over now we think they are transformers. Sirens everywhere. At my sons house and we just had a tree guy take down a tree that was about to come down on the power line. The firemen said they couldn't take it down until it took out the lower due to "Liability issues". So this guy is going around taking down trees that are in danger of coming down on houses and power lines as this one was doing both. Five minutes and almost $1,000 later minus one tree.
IT'S REALLY BAD and they are telling us the worst is yet to come. Honestly I doubt I will have a house when this is over. First time I was ever afraid being in my own house. My son that near me has power but it keeps going out. That's where I am at this time. My other son is over in Virginia by Washington DC and he has not had power since this afternoon. My brother on long island has no power. My other brother in the mountain on the northern part of NJ has lost a few trees. Friends that had houses on the water we don't know what happened because those towns were evacuated and can't speak to them but those houses most likely be a total loss. For those of you who watch Jersey Shore part of the pier has collapsed and the rest is in very bad shape and we have over 24 hours to go. Pt Pleasant and Lavellete as well as Wild wood, Atlantic City and Cape may all very big vacation spots are all under water.
The sky is lighting up with transformers just blowing up all around us.

wear rubber boots , the oil in transformers will float on top of the water , and is highly toxic, with pcb's , and don't drink any groundwater, or eat food soaked in water near the ground.

Sandy knocked out power to at least 3.1 million people, and New York's main utility said large sections of Manhattan had been plunged into darkness by the storm
If the storm reaches the higher estimate of $20 billion in damage, that would put it ahead of Hurricane Irene, which raked the Northeast in August 2011 and caused $16 billion in damage. Hurricane Katrina, which killed 1,200 people, cost $108 billion.

A double rainbow touched down in Manhattan this morning, signaling an end to the stormiest of weather. Still, at least 17 have died, nearly 7 million are without power and cities have sustained an estimated $45 billion in damages.
This storm affected 10 states. The pictures of the devastion I've seen is astounding. Our thoughts and prayers are with you, and I hope you check in and let us know you are allright.

DC area dodged a bullet. Sandy wasn't as bad here as they predicted. My lights flickered a few times but I didn't lose power. Miracle of miracles! As far as I can tell, I only lost a tree limb. I feel very fortunate and have all those people who suffered worse in my prayers and thoughts.

Just logged on For a minute my phone limits me because I have to charge in my car. We Are not getting much information relying on others get me info other than what we get on local radio. So much of our area is shut down. Most roads are impassable for and more than a block . Getting gas is a big issue. Food will become an issue after tomorrow when most of us need to dump out freezers and refrigerators. Trying to see the bright side in this. I've been meaning to clean my refrigerator and freezer out for a while. Just heard some. Areas having looting but not us luckily. Got to now hope to be back soon .

It isn't a good situation for sure.
A couple things. The waves north of Sandy had been 30 feet and 45 feet to the east. Before landfall that is.
I heard of the looting also but the amazing thing is how differentlly people in that area react than the people in New Orleans did. It says lots aboyut resiliancy and character.
There have been 2 people on [one from ConEd] that said "every year we have a storm on the century".-----Seems that way to me too.

Re: Sandy is starting to look like a real BITCH!
Moved to a friends house that has electric and HEAT...
Don't know when I will know about my house. I just know there were new explosions in my neighborhood after I left tonight. I thought all the transformers and lines had already blown and all power to the area cut in case of live wires so I have no idea what it was. I wont know until morning I guess. The house a few houses away from me had the fire depart. there when I left and they went in with masks on so maybe that has something to do with it.Just guessing at this point.
Just a few odd things ..In one of the beach areas there were reports of SHARKS on the streets. The water washed up sand and the sea creatures from the beaches. I bet there are a few people that will stop drinking when they see a shark in the middle of a road. Or the house that hit the bridge. Just not things you see every day.
They keep postponing school. Now the superintendent says that most likely no school until Nov 12. At least the kids get a break although I think they would rather be in school and doing homework.
The looting is getting worse and the national guard as well as state troopers are helping out now and trying to keep it to a minimum. There are people steeling generators and gas. DIRT BAGS!
My neighborhood is still pretty good but the cops are everywhere.
