Munchausen by internet!
Ok I heard of munchausen and munchausen by proxy but now they came up with a new one. Munchausen by Internet. This is a disorder where people will go on the Internet and do things like start a facebook page and join support groups and blog and whatever else they can think of to talk about whatever disease or ailment they suposidly have. They don't really have it and they don't do it to scam money from people. They do this for attention. These are people who are seriously lacking in self confidence and crave attention desperately. The Internet tends to create a place where many people trust what the other is saying even though they don't know that person. To add to that most people generally think no would would make up such a horrific thing. These reasons just add to the prevalence of this disorder. They explained that its similar to those who lie about everything about them self on the Internet. It is one of the drawbacks of the Internet and social media. It's so sad that there are people that are that desperate for attention.
I know we have all talked about people we know who have lied about themselves on line weather it be the age, looks, weight marital status or what ever, but to go as far as saying you have a terminal illness or something along those lines is something I can't imagine. I wonder if I found out that someone lied to me about something like that, would I get pissed or just feel sorry for that person. I would think I would be pissed at first then feel sorry for that person after I calmed down. How do you think you would react?

Re: Munchausen by internet!
I keep my charitable contributions close to home. Small towns, everyone knows everyone, nobody attempts such a scam on their own neighbors.
Usually it's a benefit dinner, car wash, bake sale, raffle, etc.

These people don't do this rip anyone off. They don't ask for money in general it is strictly for attention. Its very sad.

Re: Munchausen by internet!
Yeah, it is sad. I visit a lot of different kinds of site in a days time. Some have cute little daily polls or a daily question with a comment area. There are always the same agressive people trying to force their opinions and beliefs, and the sad ones who, no matter how light and fun the topic is only talk about their major problems.
I'll guess that they are either very isolated and have no one to talk to, or they have well worn out the ears of their family and friends and just have a desperate need for sympathy.

Re: Munchausen by internet!
I think most people love the freedom of being able to discussed things freely. Good or bad on the Internet, however I know there have been a few that I have come across that it is always so depressing I find I avoid them after a while. I feel a little bad because I am sure they need to talk to some one but I guess I look at it like I do when I pass by a puppy or kitten that needs to be adopted. I just can't help them all no matter how much I would love too. It also takes a toll in you when you start listening to one depressing thing after another.
The people that they were describing in regard to this must be some of the loneliest out there. The have created a world in their own head that is totally fantasy and sad just to get any attention. Can you imagine how someones life has to be for their mind to do that?
I have come across many people over the years on the Internet that have confided in me that although they pretend to be a vibrant sexy person in reality they were house bound in some small town with no other way to have a social life. At least those people understood their reality as sad as it was. I understood why they felt they had to create the person they did online to get attention.I couldn't really blame them when you heard the way people were treated night after night. They were never going to meet anyone they played with and never did anything to harm anyone they played with so I never outed them.Their whole goal was to have a little fun and get alittle attention. How can you get mad at people that have no other outlet as long as they did no harm to others?

Re: Munchausen by internet!
On a site like this, and any adult site...most people only share a little of themselves, their sexual side. Nothing wrong with that. Some people play the fantasy games in their bedroom, it's what they like, wouldn't expect anything different from them online...they like role playing and fantasy.
Small town, huge city...whatever. People who do nothing online put on the cap locks and tell about some horrible wrong that has been done to them have isolated themselves. They may be loved by family and friends, live in a heavy populated area but drive people away.
On one site, not an adult site...one woman who is house bound, in a wheel chair, is one these people. After seeing hubs go through what he has, I understand what chronic pain and medications can do to a person's personality.
What I notice most, is the compassion and patience shown these people by the others.
No, I'm with you, "calling someone out" is not good. It's just finger pointing and that's so unattractive and makes everyone else just feel awkward.
If I have to "call someone out" here, it's privately and compassionatley. That works out well, I end up learning a lot more about them.

Munchausen was the guy hanging out on the moon with Robin Williams.

Re: Munchausen by internet!
I live a very isolated life, by choice, and have limited contact with people, and I may ommit certain details about myself, but I think it is very sad to make up ailments, to recieve sympathy from others.Perhaps their situation, or personality has alot to do with it, but if you spend enough time with someone, either on the internet, or in person, the truth will come out....and truth is one thing that never changes, it is a common single thread that will stand out , even in a field of lies.

It's a syndrome, a condition, it's a disease in its self. An incurable disease.
