Re: verizon wireless
There was recently a class action settlement. They yet again got caught charging for I believe it was data this time that was not supposed to be charged for or maybe this was the one for their vz-backup. They have gotten caught so many times I loose track. Anyway I believe they agreed to refund the money. The problem is by the time the lawyers get their share its a ridiculous amount to the customer. Normally it is a refund or credit on your account. I thought the only ones that get checks are those who no longer have a Verizon wireless account anymore.
They should send an explanation. There are times that by cashing a check that is the same as agreeing you will take it as final settlement and agree to take no further action against whomever that action might be with. In this case Verizon Wireless. (Only pertaining to the issue the check is payment for not further or other issues you might have with them.) So you are right to not cash a check without knowing why you received it. You can contact their legal department for clarification or check to see if there is something about it in your bill or on the web site or maybe an email from them. There are times when you can write a note in the memo prior too cashing that you do not except this as a settlement or total payment but that doesn't always cover you.

Re: verizon wireless
Call them before you cash it. If you are in dispute and cash that check it can put an end to the dispute. It is like saying you accept their off as final. Tell them you want an explanation in writing. They will most likely tell you they can't send you anything. I personally recommend recording your conversation with them. In my state I don't even have to tell them I'm recording the conversation as long as I am a party in the conversation, but you need to check if you have to let then know if your recording in your state.
