4th of July and Independence Day
The Fourth of July and Independence Day, July 4th has been a federal holiday in the United States since 1941, but the tradition of Independence Day celebrations goes back to the 18th century and the American Revolution (1775-83).
In June 1776, representatives of the 13 colonies declared their independence from Great Britain. On July 4, the Continental Congress adopted the Declaration of Independence, a historic document drafted by Thomas Jefferson.
From 1776 until the present day, July 4th has been celebrated as the birth of American independence, with typical festivities ranging from fireworks, parades and concerts to more casual family gatherings and barbecues.

at least 28 states have banned fireworks due to the heat and dry weather, up to $25,000 fine if caught...

Re: 4th of July and Independence Day
I always enjoyed fireworks. They are everywhere around here. Because this is a tourist spot they have them once a week in just about every town so if its Wed go to Sea Side if its Tuesday it might be Point Pleasant etc... there are strict laws regarding weather restrictions even for the professional shows like those. If the wind blows them from over the water to the boardwalk it would be a disaster.
I have to say that I have started to really hate the people that shot them off individually. Besides being illegal it is dangerous. They don't care if it hits your roof or pool or even your dog. They don't care if its 2:00 am. Those jerks have really taken the fun out of it for me. I find I cant wait until summer is over because that is when it normally stops. At least until New Years anyway.

Who???... Most anyone really... people are fucking idiots!! However, I want to know, if they are being banned and there is a fine if caught, why isn't there a fine for selling them... I know I'm being ingnorant, just seems to me they should start at the top.

Re: 4th of July and Independence Day
A lot of areas near me have cancelled the public fireworks display and banned the private ones, but the huge fireworks shop jusr a few miles up the road has sprung for a TV ad this year and the usual tent shops are dotted about here and there.
I'm with Kss, doesn't make sense to me either, all these bans and warnings but the shops are still advertising to come on down and get the baddest, biggest and the cheapest price.
Quite a few areas are also reminding us to conserve water because the fire departmant will be needing the reserve.

Yep, there are huge firework stores up near the city. This year with the weather, there are state wide bans. They are stilll going through with some displays like at the arch because they are on the water.

Re: 4th of July and Independence Day
In Massachusetts, we live a sheltered life. Politicians here think we can't be trusted to do anything but blow our arms off from fireworks. Fireworks have been banned for as long as I can remember, but New Hampshire is not. I live right on the border and can name 50 or so stores that are within 10 miles of the NH border. Massachusetts is so convicted in their belief that they have banned everything that contain any forms of gunpowder. Some of them include;
1. Pop-gun caps ( the plastic speed-loader and red strip type)
2. Pop-It's (look like spit-balls that you throw at the ground)
3. Sparklers
4. Model-Rockets (the propellent, not the model)
5. Snakes (the packed carbon you light and it smokes)
6. Party-Poppers (bottle shaped where you pull the string)
7. Punks (camel poop on a stick,incense)
8. Cracklers (1/4th the size of lady-fingers, make the sound of Rice Crispy's after milk is poured on them)
They're even looking to add a few in the next few years;
1. Packing Bubbles- Apparently, people are not properly disposing of the sheets after using them as, "Alternative" fireworks.
2. Glow-Sticks- Last year there were an increasing number of accidents from kids swinging these lethally hard plastic colored toys around.
3. Flashlights- The ones with strobe effects as an option. Shined in the eyes of a child or driver can cause an accident and there is no real need for a strobe light on a flashlight.

Wow, I think they are a bit over the top there. Maybe they just need something else to concentrate on on . Go hire a bunch of hookers and get those people laid!
The strobe flash lights are for safety. They use them when you are lost to help the search party find you. We even use an underwater version in diving and we have the clip on type for camping/hiking as well.Pilots have then also. I believe we have them in every safety /emergency kit we have.I even had a version for my dogs collar for when we would walk at night.

Several years ago, i was at the East St. Louis truck stop. After the fireworks started, i left to drive across thed river. How was i to know that Il and MO state patrol would block all except one lane in each direction so people could watch from the bridge. Oh, them fireworks are really bright and hot when you're that close to 'em.

Well, I wasn't totally wrong and ignorant.
"Yes, four states -- Delaware, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York -- actually ban the sale and use of all consumer fireworks. That includes the sparkler."

Re: 4th of July and Independence Day
Fireworks big display was rained iut here. But the wind was such before it rained, I attached kite string the chihuahua (or however the hell ya spell it), the one thats all ears, and flew her for a while, so it was not a total loss. Well, she tried to resist at first, but after she was air bourne, and was over 100 feet, she seemed to calm down some. But ya, I enjoyed my 4th, just had to improvise some. Hope all had a safe one. (now the dog seems to be shaking more, go figure)

Re: 4th of July and Independence Day
I think the storm that blew in minutes after the big fireworks show lit op the sky more than the fireworks. My poor cats were not happy for either display. The kitten just looked confused and puffed up for most of the fireworks.He started yo calm down then the storm hit and that was it.He wouldn't leave my daughters side. The big one wasn't much happier. I think they will sleep all day just from the stress.

Re: 4th of July and Independence Day
I grew up in NY and have lived in NJ for about 25 years and I know they are illegal however they do not enforce the laws. There was a house a couple of blocks away that blew up and just burned for hours. It almost killed the kids living in it. Why? Because the father went to the garage to smoke a joint . He decided to light a candle so the kids wouldn't smell the pot. He gets so stoned he forgets about the candle and the fireworks he had stockpiled in the garage. I bet you can guess the rest of the story.......
