Would you?
I present to you a button.
Each time you press it, two things happen.
First, I give you one million dollars, tax free and untraceable.
Second, run a program that selects a random person in the world and order a hit man to kill this person. You do not get to see who it is. There are no guarantees that it won't be someone you know or care about.
Would you press the button? How many times? How often?

If I'm handing out a million bucks just for pressing a button, I sure as hell ain't going to be caught for it. Since I'm the one ordering the hit man in this scenario, I believe you would be protected from the resulting actions.
As far as who I am...

This reminds me of a movie that I saw. I can't remember the name of it now.....
To answer your question, of course I would never hold money over anyone's life.
Money is trite, life is ALL. Shakespear was wrong when he said that money was the root of all evil. Selfishness is really the root of all evil.
Oh yea.. "The Box" I think was the name

I'm not surprised there's a movie about this, its a classic ethical debate. At what point in the story does pressing the button no longer become worth it?

Re: Would you?
I say I would not oonsider pushing the button it at all,
Of course, when things are theroritcal, there's allot of "I would never do that"
I can assume if The Donner party were interviewed before setting out and asked "Would you ever under any circumstance resort to cannibalism" they would have all said "Never!"
If we were posed with this in reality, who knows what thoughts would pop from the depths, if we wouldn't for at least for a second, consider accepting the offer.

Shakespeare was very sound on money. He never said money was the root of all evil, what he said was that the love of money was the root of all evil.
And even better is Iago in Othello:
Good name in man and woman, dear my lord,
Is the immediate jewel of their souls.
Who steals my purse steals trash; 'tis something, nothing;
'Twas mine, 'tis his, and has been slave to thousands;
But he that filches from me my good name
Robs me of that which not enriches him,
And makes me poor indeed.
Now I hope you all feel suitably chastised about besmirching Free's good name...

If I were god, I'd kill you all - From the song I'd Kill You All, attributed to Violent J
If I were god we'd all be dead - From the song Shiver, attributed to A Plea For Purging
Supposedly all the song titles and many of the lyrics from the album that the song Shiver came from a book titled A Marriage of Heaven and Hell written by William Blake. I found no references to any priests with any variations of the above quote...
But if such a priest did exist, he'd be very rich and there would be only a couple people left... Must make sure the assassin is a hot sexy female that likes me...

Re: Would you?
I'm going to show myself a complete nerd and quote Spock (probably misquote a bit too). "The good of the many over the good of the few or the one."
Just think how many people's lives could be changed for the better with a millon dollars. 2 million dollars. 5 million dollars. How many lives could be saved at the cost of just that one life? How many children fed that would have otherwise died of starvation? How many could recieve medical care that otherwise would have perished just from the lack?
It would be a spiralling travesty, if a person hit the button the first time. And I would hope that my strength of character and integrity would pull me through and keep me from pressing that evil little button but I couldn't swear that it would. I admit I would be tempted. And I might fail.

What if this person was your child? If not your child, it would most certainly be someone's child. Or, what if it were you? Who would help change lives for the better?

By it being untraceable, you wouldn't know who was killed by you pushing the button. You could refuse the choice and the next day someone you love could be mugged and killed. Then you could kick yourself for the rest of your life because the mugger might have been the one who was killed if you pushed the button.
He hires the hit. He picks the target. His moral responsiblity for the death. I make enough mistakes to feel guilty over without taking on someone else's guilt.
Actually, the more we discuss this the more I could justify pushing the button. Maybe I am just an evil person and I haven't realized it yet. Good girl gone bad. lol

Re: Would you?
I would not do it for a million dollars. HOWEVER, I have always said everyone is a whore for the right price. Depending on circumstances and amount of money I (AND I BELIEVE ALL) would do it. For instance if my kid needed a life saving surgery and I needed the money. I might take the chance if it was his only chance. But if it was today and just for the one million. Nope. First, I don't think one million is all that anymore. Second there is nothing that I want that would be worth taking that chance or killing someone that could be a good person for.

Re: Would you?
This is a similar question asked by royalty of the knights of the crusades,it is a question of morality,to find where your loyalty lies.Either to your king, god , fellow man,or your personal morals. Some knights answered to this riddle that they would slay the person offering the payment, and end the temptation for themselves and others, saving countless lives and souls.....they were awarded gold crosses to be attached to their face piece on their helmets, showing everyone in battle they were pure of heart......so my question to you is,would you risk the offering,if it was perhaps you who would pay the ultimate price?

Re: Would you?
You bring an interesting twist. The funny thing is I would be much more willing to take a chance on my own life than of people I care about. So using my "everyone is a whore for the right price" thought. The only thing I cant figure out is so does that change it to ....if I push the button the two things that would happen now becomes more of a Russian roulette? So one :I or my designated person gets the million dollars and ...Two....there is a one in a 6.5 billion that I die. If that is the the way it would be I would be more likely to push that button.
