Hatfield/McCoys
History channel is running a 3 part series on this. Has been interesting so far also pretty much historically correct from what I briefly read.
I didn't realize how much property was involved in this nor that the McCoys were politically connected and made out well in the timber/lumber trade.

Great show, most were under the impression the feud started over a pig. There is so much more to it than that

Re: Hatfield/McCoys
It's on the history channel, 3 night event, They are running all 3 part 2 hour episodes all tonight so you can catch up. (Part 1 starts at 4pm central time) Check your local listings!
It is awesome, Kevin Costner plays Devil Anse Hatfield, Bill Paxton plays Randall McCoy. Mare Winningham has always been in my eyes, an under-rated talent, she plays Randall's wife Sally McCoy.

Guess I am cut from different cloth. Watching it just to see it play out. A little to slow moving for my taste, but kind of interesting.

Re: Hatfield/McCoys
It may seem slow to anyone who has little previous knowledge about this huge legendary feud, or anyone who has little interest in this era and area of American History.
Part 1 is primarily a matter of getting acquainted with the many main characters.

I'm not sure who if anyone saw the 2 hours prior to the mini series, called America's Greatest Feud; Hatfield/McCoys.
Now that was 2 hours of documentary with photo's. Not sure if it will be on again, but very worthwhile!

I didnt find out about that till 10 minutes before it ended. I hope its on again too. Chances are, it will be. I heard that the movie had the highest ratings of any cable movie premiere. I'm sure History will milk it for all its worth, as well they should

It is sad! The second episode was the hardest to watch, SERIOUSLY!!! And, after hearing all the facts, I have yet to see a valid reason for the feud to begin. It is my understanding these were literate people. And, I understand they thought they may have had good reason for doing what they did... but no, it doesn't make sense.. no sense at all!
The loss of lives, especially to the McCoy's was devasting. And, during my reading, it was noted many of those bounty hunters and law enforcement just "disappeared".

Re: Hatfield/McCoys
I wonder just how close that movie was to the reality of everything that actually happened. Obviously, there was only so much that was documented that the writers could draw from and I'm sure some artistic leeway was taken. Still, a damn fine movie. However, I could never find enough hatred in my heart to cause even a fraction of what happened.
PS, the GEICO commercial that was done for the movie was VERY cleverly done!

Re: Hatfield/McCoys
The civil war caused such deep wounds, R. McCoy bitterness about Anse leaving the war a bit early while he ended up in a Union Prison, hearing about the murder of one of his kin while he was in a postiion to be able to do nothing about it most likely did do much damage to R. McCoy's mental health. The war's prison camps treated the prisoners in the most humiliating, in humane and despicable way.
(When some civil wars artifacts are discovered, they are found stuck deep in the rafters of the attics, or in an excavated outhouse, that's how the folks felt after the war, they wanted to see no more of anything to do with the war, the women folk usually disposed or hid away the remnants of it to be forgotten.
As far as the accuracy of the series. So much of the behavior seems authentic to me even though my heritage is Ozark not Appalachian. They were clans, heads of the clans and the clans did kinda govern themselves.
I agree with Kss about the literacy, I doubt much can compare to the intense emotional eloquence of a civil war soldier's letter home.
The series is disturbing and haunting for sure. For those who haven't seen part 3, I sure won't spoil that for ya but it's intenses.

I've been doing a bit of reading on the feud. As a movie or TV show will often do, there seems to be this series. Too many charactars would just make it cluttered and harder to follow so as they do sometimes, several characters are melded into one main role.
That seems to be for the series' Nancy McCoy. She was Rosanna's cousin and she did marry Johnse but the woman on record as devulging Hatfield information to Phillips and also marrying him was not Johnse's wife Nancy, but a Mary McCoy. Nothing is said about how she got such information
It would seem that Nancy McCoy in this series was combined with this Mary McCoy.
Alifair McCoy, the daughter shoot by Cotton Top during the New Years day massacre. In this series she was just but a child, but records show she did indeed die Jan. 1 1888 but was born in 1858...making her 30 years of age. I surely got the impression she was much younger from the series.
