Re: Syb, and onehornee
LMAO I have heard the teeth reference(and maybe a few in-bread jokes, cars in your yard and furniture on your porch too.. Sorry couldn't help but throw those in.). However I never heard the raciest reference to either hillbilly or redneck.I guess depending on where you're from and what the experience is of the people spreading the crap is what you hear.I guess Jeff Foxworthy is not the best to go by as a guide either. But he is funny.

Re: Syb, and onehornee
Ozark Hillbillies are very keen on education as are the rednecks. Hillbillies are taught to read and write before we enter the school system, and yes, that does make those first few grades pretty boring for us. Hillbillies are a bit stoic, we have strong opinions but don't see the need to ram them down anyone else's throat, very few stills exists and as mentioned before, it's for tradition not for profit. Hillbillies are health conscience for sure, that includes our teeth. Hillbillies do not mate with relatives but we cherish family above all else. There was a time in the sparsely populated hill areas where if a woman became widowed, it was not unusual for one her late husband's brothers to step up and marry her, she's already family and it would not be right to watch a family widow struggle on her own. (That's what I mean by "family is cherished above all else" )
We are usually raised in a baptist based religion. Hillbilly history is immigration. Our ancestors are early immigrants who's American dream was not to live in a filthy crowded city, (cities a century plus ago were filthy, with little or no sanitation systems, even the well to do and snobish pooped in the "sugar pot" and then just dumped it out the window in the morning, an outhouse in the country, far more hygenic)
The bluegrass music is an evolved genre of folk music from the immigrants homeland. Sometimes a blend of German, Irish, English mixed with black slave songs and instruments. I see, I hear true beauty in that.
The nasty stereotype, really don't understand where it came from. Maybe the language set off an impression of ignorance but those with a false sense of superiority over others that are different, but I love the dialect and language of the farmer, the hillbilly, the redneck. It's not how something is said, it's what is said.
Stereotypes are just exaggerated caricatures. Most were created during the height of the immigration to this country where politics and commerce created the most negative and offensive stereotypes to panic and manipulate the population. Everyone was a target based on their homeland, their religion, their culture, their skin color. Political and commercial...nuff said there ya know.
Every culture has it value among us if we are not dumbass and stupid enough to believe in the created stereotype and smart enough to want to learn the history of others different than ourselves.

Re: Syb, and onehornee
Onehornee I agree we should all make fun of ourselves and lighten up a bit. I always joke and say it's in my DNA not to pay full price for anything. It drives my mother crazy when I say that.lol The sad part is when people truly believe the stereotypes to the fullest. I don't know if we can ever get rid of that completely but I know as we see the next generation grow up we can only hope. I know from seeing my kids and their friends I have hope. Yes of course there are exceptions and the media normally find those idiots to interview and put out on TV for a while that make it seem that the worst is out there. I believe they are the minority and the progression is better than portrayed in the media most times. I can dream of a world with no prejudice and hatred based on stupid stereotypes.

Re: Syb, and onehornee
I love that we laugh at ourselves. Newb, one who often laughs at her own spelling gave me the uplifting laugh out loud moment of the day with the phrase "sterotype...hillbillies are uneducated and in bread" ( I remember reading that here)
Hillbillies spell it "inbred" although I have been in bread, up to my elbows in baking pumpkin, banana nut, and irish baking soda bread many, many times!
Sterotypes are for humor only really, for me at least. It's just humor.

QUOTE (newbie1011 @ June 2, 2012, 15:43)I also want to know what you think the difference is between the two. In my mind its more or less the same, maybe a hillbilly stereotype is a bit less educated and has a still somewhere on their property.
Redneck is a part of hillbilly history, it was a labor movement among the workers of the Appalachian people, in protest and solidarity they wore red bandannas around their necks and so they were called rednecks. Accurately, rednecks do not really exist today, it was a historic American event.
Foxworthy's definitions aren't at all accurate in my area.
Anyone considering themselves a redneck is just like anyone else in rural areas, love to maintain their home and yard, drive pickups (it's the second vehicle, the utilitarian one, the primary one is a sweet sporty thing with a big ole sound system), but no camo paint or gunracks unless it's hunting season.
Sterotypes are funny, spent two weeks in Texas, Austin, Houston, San Antonio, Hill Country...never once did I see a doode with boots, oversized belt buckle and not one cowboy hat as I recall.

I wasn't aware of that. I thought that a "redneck" was a person that worked outside all day and therefor got a red neck from the sun.

Re: Syb, and onehornee
What's cool is...it is strongly believed that the term redneck didn't even originate in this country. It may be european.
As far as hillbillies have stills on their property. Most are strictly religious in a baptist faith. So...the whole drinking thing wasn't encouraged at all, can't have a bunch of hungover drunks responsible for getting enough crops in and harvested to feed the family for the winters.
Farmers often wore the bandanna around the neck to prevent the sunburn, antique photos also show them wearing long sleeved white shirts buttoned up to the top neck button while in the summer fields. They weren't idiots for sure, they knew to protect themselves against the sun.
