Ya, my dear ole daddy (that would be perve senior, and if he could see me now, he would be so proud), always told me "Son, (called me son, cause I was pre perve), if you want to be happy for the rest of yer life, dont marry outside the family." I thought I needed a translator when trying to read what perve writes. I think I need a Hillbilly to English translation book to be around some of you guys.Maybe it should be Hillbilly to East Coast....Don't feel bad, Kam and I just laugh when we try to understand some of the things he and I talk about. You should have heard us when I was trying to explain that I don't care what Wikipedia says, Brooklyn and Queens are not part of Long Island It's part of the 5 boroughs that make up NY city and Long Island is not part of NY city! Any NY'r will tell you the same!!! Yeah that was an interesting 45 minute debate.

Nah, it'd have to be hillbilly to Joisy.----lol
Brooklyn, Queens, Bronx are part of the 5 boroughs in NYC. That's why they make 5 borough maps. [a rather informative thing and large help] Many get confused 'cause Long Island City isn't near Long Island.

No I sure haven't, heard of the tea I think...I do adore the "spring tonic" of sassafrass tea...so good! Mostly in my area and my family's area of orgin (we're Ozark Hillbilly) it's usually blackberry, wild grape, dandelion and elderberry wines. Moonshine in the Ozark hills is a rare delight, it's not made in quanities for profit, but just another family recipe passed down through the ages to be shared with only friends and family.

Hillbillies are rather stoic really. We don't say much so not much needs translated.

Re: Syb, and onehornee
I can't even get into the 5 borough thing because I would need to type a book. Even NY' s have a hard time trying to explain the long Island thing to their kids when studying it in school.lol
As I'm reading this thread it made me smile. We all joke about the stereo types which all have a tiny bit of truth but mostly highly exaggerated in a negative way. I like that we realize that and have fun with it. I cringe when I see the shows that are on TV like "Jersey Shore" and "Real housewives of NY". I would be pissed if my kids ever acted like that or talked like that I would never have let them out of the house. They find the most classless people for those shows. The JS kids have been thrown out by both my boys from places they have worked. Those kids are hated by locals and for the record are not from Jersey.
By the way I like some stereo types so don't burst my bubble and tell me they are not true. I want to believe southern men are polite and guys in uniforms are all hot and a few other things ill just keep believing became I want too.lol

Re: Syb, and onehornee
Naw Josie I'm not offended by the hillbilly sterotype remarks. The only offense is when someone uses the sterotype for malicous name calling as "Stupid Redneck" or "ignorant hillbilly" Then of course anyone would take offense at that kind of attitude and I don't see any of that here.
I remember after the Ozarks and when the Ozark lake was created into a huge tourism vaction area. They used the corn cob smoking, cousin lusting, moonshine swilling, barefoot lazy cartoons for their T-shirt, coffee mugs, postcards and billboards. My elders were disgusted and very offended by the ad campaign.
If it were not for the sterotypes, there would be little humor left in the world.

And of course they are very pissed at the deer that eat their flowers and the bear that raid their garbage. Then they try to have it all changed.Who are the real idiot's. I live in tiny little town (pop. around 350) with a beautiful name. The city folk come through on the weekends for the antiques and the catfish. crawdaddies, and frogleg on the quaint diner menus.
What really makes the city people rage out, is getting behind a tractor for a few miles on the road way. Geezus..it's farmland out here, people.

QUOTE (kamarel @ June 2, 2012, 12:01)Isn't the road wide enough to pass? yea but it can be risky sometimes i get behind combines in central illinois on old roads and it can take a while with an 18 wheeler to get enough room to get to speed..

Re: Syb, and onehornee
Two lane highways, lot of double yellow lines. The tractors are just going from one pasture or field to the next, usually only a few miles.
The farmers are very courteous, when they notice a few cars behind them, they will pull over as far as they can on the shoulder and wave you on when it's safe to pass.
A lot of city people just can't stand that though, always in a hurry to pass every car on the road. I don't know why, there's no checkered flag up there, there's no finish line or trophy for any winners, there's always gonna be cars in front of you. I see no need to blow an anuerysm every time ya get behind another vehicle.

QUOTE (Chazzy @ June 2, 2012, 11:34)I live in tiny little town (pop. around 350) with a beautiful name. The city folk come through on the weekends for the antiques and the catfish. crawdaddies, and frogleg on the quaint diner menus.
What really makes the city people rage out, is getting behind a tractor for a few miles on the road way. Geezus..it's farmland out here, people.
Around here I'm just happy when they wave at me with all five fingers,...and Kiss says John Deere is sexiest, I'm painting flames on my New Holland bailer for her when she comes here this summer to help me do the haying

Re: Syb, and onehornee
Have you ever noticed no mater who is making fun of rednecks or hillbilly's they all sound like Jeff Foxworthy. As if no other areas have rednecks and hillbilly's. I also want to know what you think the difference is between the two. In my mind its more or less the same, maybe a hillbilly stereotype is a bit less educated and has a still somewhere on their property.
I have to admit getting stuck behind a tractor does make me crazy, but I do known that its me and have no reason to be annoyed by the tractor. The funny thing is I don't drive fast at all anyway.

I know for myself there isn't really a big difference, but in the last while the redneck term may take on the racist or skinhead conatation, which I am most certainly not a part of.Having said that I suppose a "Hillbilly" has to actually live in the hills, and a redneck actually has to have a "red neck" from working in the sun, and I'm guilty of both, making me a double barreled stereotype, hayseed, moonshine swilling, backwoods kinda guy...I suppose that has some sorta charm hidden in there someplace....What do you think of me so far?
