Chicago NATO Summit
Not sure this will effect many, but it will effect my travels at least 2 times.
The Illinois DOT says during the NATO Summit in Chicago May 20-21, it's best to avoid the city, especially
downtown and South Loop, during that week. It's also placing certain restrictions (with no permit loads) on
oversize and overweight loads.
Effective May 18-22, all oversize and overweight loads are prohibited on the expressway and ramps on:
- All roadways from Damen Ave. East to Lake Michigan and from 39th Street North to IL 64 (North Ave.)
- I-90 Chicago-(Kennedy Expressway) I-90 to IL-64:
- I-94 Chicago-(Kennedy Expressway) I-90 (West junction )to IL-64
- I-190 Chicago O'Hare To I-90 (Kennedy Expressway)
About 10,000 people, including about 2,000 journalists, are expected to come to Chicago for the summit. That
estimate does not include anti-NATO protesters.
As the Chicago Tribune reports, in Chicago and the suburbs, gates at highway entrance ramps are being
checked to make sure they are in working order to close and reopen access to the roads - "a procedure originally
designed for use in an all-out emergency like a bioterrorism attack."
For more information, go to www.dot.state.il.us.
The city of Chicago also will be relying on the "Notify Chicago" system to keep residents and visitors updated on
traffic issues. This alert system will inform users about street closures, bus reroutes, and potential delays. To
sign up for this free text, email, or phone alert service, please visit the Notify Chicago website.
I realize this seems like its only a message for Heavy Trucks but with 30 + yrs of driving in and near the Windy I feel anyone that doesnt need to be there should avoid this like the plague..

Re: Chicago NATO Summit
Note to the ole perve: Just say no to summits. But by the same token, I never need to be concerned about road construction areas here, gave up the expense of vehicle ownership about 12 years ago. So when watching the news, traffic and road condtiions, I laugh, as its irrelavant in my home. lol. I walk across the street to the store and bank, bus stops, (if needed) are about 100 yards away, going all directions. Great bus system here, very affordable. Damn I'm a cheap bastard. Done now with sharing that useless info.

Re: Chicago NATO Summit
It makes me laugh when people say " its so exciting that the president is coming to town". Growing up in NY you get used to famous people, movies being filmed, political events happening etc. But I have to tell you that I don't think anyone I know that had to deal with the delays and disruptions that felt it was good. It just happens to often and usually is a major pain in the ass. You would feel the same if you had to sit in your car for a couple of hours behind a state trooper because the president was flying into Newark airport and they close a perimeter around the airport when he does. I remember saying to the trooper " Really? Two hours? He could fly back to Washington in less time. It really isn't necessary to shut it down this long and I have an appointment with a client. Can't you just let me go through?" A got a big smile and a NO.
