Ever have a seriously close call
Three times in my lifetime I had Been given the big break,or what I felt was a regift of life.
1.First Time my friend and I(he was driving)we had been drinking,He tryed to beat the train,I told him Dont even try it but he floored it and we didnt beat it,If I had pushed my feet any harder into the floor I woulda fell through.we ended up hitting the engine just behind the fuel tank It Smashed the car into the engine And started dragging us along side,we both were able to bail and made it out basically unhurt Thanks to the train speed only being less than 20.But I knew Someone had to be watching over me,Never rode with that Asshole again..
2nd time:Basic training,Anyone my age or older knows or might know, if you are a potential fuckup it gets you singled out,Unlike todays basic training the old days they would yank you out of formation and kick your ass, knock you down whatever they felt, and It doesnt get left on the range or march or formation, it follows you everywhere The barracks the shitter even the shower (Ever see Full Metal Jacket)not neccesarily fiction,as your government property.Well every platoon has at least one sacraficial troop that just cant handle the tear you down and rebuild you tougher process, and this particular one first time on live fire tryed to shoot the drill seargent, which was beside me lecturing the troops,Bastard Gets his Weapon offs the safety and let one fly,It was close enough I felt the breeze through my BDU,s..I See this as Another regift of life..
My latest regift was during my employment with a major airline,One day on a maintenance trip To a hub I got yanked Off a flight As employees Get last dibbs on flights,I was So pissed at the time knowing I had to get this flight to be home to my new wife on the weekend,I was replaced on the flight but not on the passenger manifest when I called my supervisor to tell him I was late ,He informed me the planes fate and all were lost.. Shit like this really makes you take a long look at what you have..And appreciate Things a lot more
sorry for the gloomy topic, just Was on my mind this morning, had to share.Maybe some of the small shit we stress about really isn't worth the effort.

Re: Ever have a seriously close call
Well, I guess. Getting struck by a train is pretty drastic. My friend's older brother died when his car was hit by a train. I don't know the specifics, just he was older and crazy.
We had train tracks without electronic safety gates, when we were 16 and beginning to drive. One night my girl friend was driving me home in her mom's Oldsmobile. The music was blaring, and she pretty much always ran the tracks. This night, I said, "I think I hear a train", so she stopped. Right about this time, a train came barreling down the tracks and we just looked at each other. I have great respect for trains, and keep my distance.
I got caught at 3am in bad weather while driving to my job at the Post Office. The smoke from the grove burning mixed with fog, causing zero visibility on the highway. Which pretty much means you should not stop on the road. However, as I was driving, I looked up to see lights on the top of what was a quarter ton truck.....stopped in the road. I held onto the wheel, and my Chrysler Laser slide under the truck, all the way up to and cracking the windshield. Then, the truck began to move pulling the hood forward like an accordion. I truly felt I was not alone and was being protected.
Very few know this, but I've been shot. It was a fatal gunshot, but I survived, I am alive, and with only a scar to show for it.

With my rather past eventful (wild) lifestyle, ig I were to write a book, 3 chapters would be devoted, to just this topic. Will just say, I may have made it much past 18.

Re: Ever have a seriously close call
It's amazing how many people have had experiences that by all right should have found them dead. I know I have had a few myself. The worst strangely enough I can't remember . I always though people lied when they said they didn't remember. But it happens. I am just so grateful that my children and my mother and I all lived through it. Me having the most severe injuries but I am so grateful it was me and not them. It's bad enough they had the injuries they did.I only know the little pieces I remember here or there or it could be the stuff I've been told we aren't really sure. The doctors says it PTSD and that when you have something so horrific happen that your brain thinks you can't deal with it it sometimes blocks it out. So I guess I should be grateful I can't remember the accident.
Even worse was that my children have all been in circumstances where they could or even should have died on more than one occasion. My daughter had to have open heart surgery and they had to stop her heart to do it. I can hardly think about it without shaking sometimes.I've seen my children almost die and that is something I could never live with.I always tell them that we are the luckiest family in the world because we have survived it all and we have all had our share of crap. So from now on it should be smooth sailing.

Third Man Factor or our brain's "angel switch"
Sounds all biological I know, but just because something is recognized by science or has a scientific offering of an explanation doesn't make it any less real and spiritual to me.
An angel could walk into the Mayo clinic and allow everyone to study them at all lenghts. There would be so many journals, reports, lab results and theories documented, but it's still an angel.

No need to be sorry I feel lucky. It all could have been much worse. Besides compared to you I think I'm very lucky! Like you said all these things add to who we are. I do wish my children never had any of their bad experiences , but I guess every parent feels that way.But we are all still here and relatively in good shape. There are actually some good things that came from the bad.I got to spend much more time with my children than I would have ,had I not been hurt and I were still working.

I'd kinda like to hear a bit more about that grizzly, Sybie. That moment in my life took me years to talk about, and I almost didn't include it in my list of "close calls"...I was 3 hours out from the nearest paved road in a place called Dog creek ,and was on foot and looking for deer sign.I walked up to a downed fir tree that had been cut just wide enough to let a ATV thru.On the other side of that tree was a bundle of blonde hair, and i knew that it was a bear,by its 4" claws, and i thought it was dead. I paused for a second and remember I stopped breathing and at that point it started to get up.I must have taken a step back then, although I don't remember doing it,I remember looking down at my gun and thinking it was way to small of a calibre for the situation at hand,at that point i looked up and he had walked into that cutout section of tree, and his midsection filled the entire space....now that bear was a coastal grizzly ,and he knew he was the biggest boy on the block, and was the size of a horse cut off at the knees, and probably 900 or so pounds,so he kinda took a swat at the ground and pitched rocks and gravel in my face.. that kinda snapped me back to reality...I remember chambering a round,i remember seeing the half moon whites in the corner of his eyes, and his ears going back.I remember thinking of my family....how stupid i was to carry only a 30-30 in grizzly country...and I clearly remember thinking that if I shoot him he will in fact kill me.I pointed the barrel in the six foot space between him and I and pulled the trigger,I looked down to chamber another round, watched the brass feed itself into the gun and looked up,fully expecting him to be ontop of me,and he was gone,I looked to my left and I remember seeing that mass of blonde hair swaying back and forth as he ran thru the trees... I put the gun against the tree and just sat down on the spot and thought to myself"did that really happen?"It was then that I realized i had a piece of something in my mouth ,and spat out a chunk of my own tooth,a rock had hit me in my front tooth and slightly chipped it....either from when he swatted at the ground or when I fired the round into the ground I really am not sure to this day ,a few weeks later i was sitting in the dentists chair having that chip fixed and the dentist asked me "so how did you chip it?"I told him you'd never believe me.....
