I am a curious..............
little shit, aint I? Thus is not inteded for anything, just a legit question. I am a British-American, but as a rule, do not identify myself that way, and its not what I am talking about. Example: if I became a Canadian citizen (I know, there goes the country), would I be American-Canadian? Yes, I am getting to another enquiry. Thx

Re: I am a curious..............
I'm not sure they would allow you into the country after checking your criminal record!!!canada does allow dual citizenship unlike the U.S. when a canadian imagrates to the states they have to give up their citizenship here,we also have to have passports even to visit you now, but i'm almost certain you don't to visit here.Trades people can also work here in Canada legally, but we can't in the U.S.....so... [i know I'm probably setting myself up for something here, because I've been warned I'm about to be picked on] you would be a american- canadian .

Ok Kiss, I will spill it (ya I know, a very round about way of getting to my question). In some members profiles, no matter what country they live in, our much darker skinned brothers and sisters, are African-American, as I am caucasion. Is it just me, or are all our black friends here, no matter where they live, ALL Americans? Not from what I have noticed. Just a throw away thought is all. And plz, no one think anything else, I seem to get myself in trouble enough. lol

Re: I am a curious..............
No, I know what you are talking about. I am a big fan of Whoopi and she says, "I'm an American", no African-American statement. You know this is a long involved subject. I am Arabic. My Grandparents were both from Kafar, so what does that make me? My mom says I am a half-breed, but she always has lovely things to say about me.
And, by the way, let's not leave out Asian-American. However, I am not sure I hear America-Mexican. Maybe Mexican-American? What is that all about? And when did all this shit start?
Were there ever British-Americans or American-British? Am I making sense? I hope not!

Re: I am a curious..............
It gets confusing for so many reasons.I just got a form from the census asking more in depth questions. One of them is what my ethnic back ground is. This always confused me as a kid. One problem is most people when asked " What are you?" Many friends would say "Italian " or " Irish" etc. But when people referred to me I was " Jewish".Of course that is a religion not my ethnicity. That never made sense to me. Even when I looked at this question I still wondered what to put. It doesn't have anything that says " my grand mothers came from Russia on one side and Poland on another and both Grandfathers were in America so I have no idea where they came from."
It just confuses me and many people I ask. I have black friends that actually get offended if you refer to them as " African Americans" .One friends will say to someone that refers to her that way " I am an American. Born and raised.I never stepped foot in Africa." I just don't think it will ever be a question that is a one fits all. But I do think if you are a citizen in this country you are an American. We don't distinguish for any other race religion etc. So it just doesn't make sense to do it for one group. I personally think it makes them seem less than a full American and that's just wrong.I don't know how it even started but it should stop in my opinion.

Interestingly, the previously very strong link between shared DNA and tribal/national identity is being destroyed at a phenomenal rate these days due to the easy movement of people between continents and cultures.
For example, lactose intolerance is a inherited genetic characteristic that prevents metabolization of lactose after weaning. About 10,000 years ago a single gene mutation allowed lactose to be processed in the human body and this was very beneficial in cold climates where there were no winter crops. As this gene is also dominant it propogated quickly in those populations. This mutation has not noticeably moved to warmer geographies (e.g. Asia, Africa) partly because of social factors and partly because it would have much less benefit. In Northern Europe only 5% of the population is lactose intolerant whereas in Southeast Asia the figure is almost 100%.
America has probably attracted more diverse people and cultures than anywhere over the last 200 years and has about 15% lactose intolerance.
God/Fate/Technology (nominate your belief system of choice) has got out a big wooden spoon and is stirring the gene pool!

Re: I am a curious..............
Perve, personally I'm an American. My heritage is English and German. I belive when the website was setup, they used the American mores to describe people of African descent. Same is true of Asian. Arab, Persian, Indian, Chinese, Japanese, Indonesian, Fillipino, et al. Are all Asian and very different in mannerism, looks, culture and history. It was a convenient solution for us in the US, but likely does create issues to those from other countries trying to describe themselves to us.
