Roundabouts in America
They're not that common here, pretty rare in my area, kind of throws me off a bit when I find my exit, get to the top end of the exit ramp and find a roundabout.

Re: Roundabouts in America
I've only seen one, and it is at Sadler and A1A, in Ferenandina. On the northside of the street is a new hotel, to the west is Hall's and Hammerhead. On the
southside is a picnic area and the beach, next to the newly renovated Sliders.
So what is the point? I'll have to ask my friend. I know the first time I saw it was late at night. My friends and I were headed to the northside of the island, then decide to hit Hammerhead. Instead of going around, I simply backed down the rode and into the parking lot. I got stop the wreckless driving.

Re: Roundabouts in America
Seeing as we (Americans) had such a fit over the whole metric thing, I'm not sure how anyone thought we would react to them sneaking in roundabouts a few at a time.
I was on the exit ramp to a city I had not visited in ages, there was a roundabout on the exit and entrance ramp. They were properly laid out so it wasnt' difficult, just a bit of a suprise.
I have run across one other in a smaller town, but it's mostly just a weird intersection where people just pull up, stop, sit baffled for a few seconds then everyone tries to go at once.

Re: Roundabouts in America
Okay, I had to look this up.
Introduction to Roundabouts
Each year, cities receive numerous requests to reduce the traffic congestion on their streets. Citizens also express concerns about the safety of the streets on which they live. In an effort to find appropriate ways to deal with these concerns, reduce traffic congestion and improve safety, many cities have begun considering the use of "roundabouts."
Really?

Re: Roundabouts in America
Yep, not saying they are a bad thing at all, they're just new.
Hubs' family is English, he was born in England, so he's a little more familiar with them than I am.

Re: Roundabouts in America
They are a big subject where I live. They have had so many accidents in them that many towns have ripped them out. I know when we get people from out of state they get totally confused and stop when they get to them. That's the worst thing and that is one thing that causes many of the accidents. I know they started adding them in Arizona and Michigan and I love the reaction when people see them and say Wholly shit! What are we supposed to do now?".
They have always been here as far as I know.It is very difficult for truck drivers I have to admit. If someone doesn't use them correctly and cuts off a truck or stops in front of a truck it is a nightmare and we have a lot of trucks. I always said that "Circles" (That's what we call roundabouts over here) and "Jug-handles" were put here by some idiot that saw and planes that were intended as a joke but took them seriously."Jug-handles" make you make all turns from the right lane and depending on where you are going you could wind up doing a "clover" before you get there. But beware, you could have "jug-handles" and "circles" for most of a roadway then get the one turn that is a "cut in" or a "new common turn lane" that lets you make a right, but of course you're in the left lane because all others were from the left. (They have added those common turn lanes to some areas around here recently.) If you don't know the area you could wind up driving in circles to get to where you have to go or getting into a major wreck. It's like they decided to use NJ as the test ground for every type of traffic experiment they could think of.Drive here at your own risk!If you're religious, a little prayer couldn't hurt either.

Re: Roundabouts in America
I first encountered these in NJ.
Like the idea and I think they do save people from crashes. Simply because the traffic keeps flowing. That's provided they are made correctly.
Many states [including MN] barely make them big enough to get a semi thru without running over at least one curb.

They're popping up like crazy here. And they're a pain in the ass, primarily because of the imbies that cant figure them out.
