Sometimes I really wish I paid more attention in English classes at school.
I've always admitted that my spelling is horrendous, but it really is much worse that that. I hate writing to be honest. I can't spell, my grammar is fair at best and I have no knowledge of punctuation or sentence structure at all.Computers help to some degree. I have to admit If I have to write a letter I stress over it because I always think I will look stupid. I know I'm not stupid but reading things I wrote at times makes my cringe. I try to spell check everything but I confuse spell check many times. Did I sleep through English classes? No, I did pretty well in school. Although English was never my strongest subject.
I know some people just seem to write as if they were born to do it. It frustrates me that it's so difficult for me. Today I was thinking about how to say this sentence and to be honest I still don't know which way is correct: Give me someone who can help me. OR Give me someone that can help me. ( I think who is correct because I am referring to a person, but not sure)This is just one example where I say "I should know this. It should not be that difficult!" I speak much better than I write. But writing is something I have to do everyday so it's important to be able to do it fairly well. When I had to write commercials I was fine when I was thinking of the concepts but when I had to put the script together I would always have my "go to people" to check it for all the mistakes. If I write a letter I always have someone check it for errors.I even spell check the notes I write for my daughter for school. I can't use the "Oh you just can't read my writing" excuse because I have a really neat handwriting.
Does anyone else stress over their lack of writing skills?

Take a class, or go online and learn. And, you "have to write everyday" ? I am aware of my writing. I am terrible
at spelling, and grammar. I think I must have been asleep from 4th grade on. Some people are just naturals... I am not one of those people!
You say you speak much better than your write, however, I think it would be very similar. I always type what I think, (well mostly), and of course what I think is what I would say. Sometimes I find if funny, as I start to talk
while I'm typing because I really feel we should have sound on this thing! Can't you hear me when I type?

English is the one class i had no interest in,i didn't give a damn if a word was a noun or adverb or adjective & i still don't. Although i have no problem reading or spelling, my writing & grammar is only fair, but as long as people understand what I'm saying, its all good as far as I'm concerned. I'm not a good writer & never claimed to be, nor do i have any interest in being one

Bah. You worry about it to much. You're talking about editing skills more than writing skills. You've seen the process and computers have made it a lot easier. No crossed out words, whited out letters and punctuation marks, and such. You've seen me go through and you know my acupuncturist was a technical editor at Doubleday. Pretty much no one can put what is in their head on paper without errors. You've seen me write. I drop words, sentences, lose the thread of an idea, misuse tenses, put in commas when it should be periods. And I need someone to proof it again and again and again.

Your mistakes are different. Most are tricks your mind plays because it knows what it is supposed to say so it skips things over. You can look at something and know if it's right or wrong.
Writing skills are important.I hate depending on computers. I should be able to write a simple note without worrying if it has the simplest of words or sentences correct.I am so grateful that my kids had the tools to work around these issues so they are much better writers. My oldest has a photographic memory so I wont even get it his skills.I have learned to get by, but it would be easier if I had better writing skills. It is a skill you use everyday.
I wonder how people who are truly illiterate get by. I bet it is very difficult for them.I couldn't imagine not being able to read . I love reading so much.
I hope that everyone that has young kids in their family or as part of a friends family READ TO THEM and WITH THEM.It really does make them develop an interest in reading and helps them later on.

I guess I'm lucky that I've always been good with words, either spoken or written.
I'm a bit of a cunning linguist ;-)

Re: Sometimes I really wish I paid more attention in English classes at school.
I don't much like the perfection really. Especially during this time where most communication are done by text. (I do mean the written word, not texting)
I like to read and write with the personality showing through.
I have four or five writing projects going on my desktop at this time. Once I finish and proofread, I'm not going to fuss over everything. I want the stories to read as if I'm speaking.
I want something like "Oh good gawd!" to remain and not be changed to the proper "Oh good God!"
I don't want someone to just know what I am saying, but who I am.
Proper paragraphs, spelling (for the most part)and puncuation I will pay attention.
