Wtf?
I have yahoo and gmail. Lately, spam in my gmail, has a long list of words, seemingly irrelevant and nonsensical to various products etc., they are selling. Anyone else noticed this, and/or know what it's all about?

Re: Wtf?
It goes in spurts. NEVER EVER RESPOND. Sometimes they have a "If you would like to be deleted from our list..." That only confirms your email and it gets worse. You can go into your email preferences and put filters up so anything from a certain email or containing a certain word etc.. will go right to your spam folder. It's easy and cuts down on your spam. I know mine even allows me to mark them as spam or put up a filter right from the email itself but I don't know if all versions do that. It's been a while since I used the Windows or Mac versions. It's really easy either way.

Re: Wtf?
Thx Newbs. Yes, my cell, which is all I use, does have a "mark as spam" feature, but never used it as 99.9% of IS in my spam folder. Hell, I thought they knew it was spam, so have never marked it. Would it do any good? And you can mark me as ignorant. And ha ha Kiss, I acually proof read this. As few ppl as here anymore, what's the (my) hurry?

Re: Wtf?
No you don't have to open your gmail to delete or mark as spam.Sorry but I can't give you computer lessons too. There is a gmail tutorial or you can go on those forums to ask. I do it all the time without opening. Perve you should put clothes on for about an hour and go to the local library by you. I know they give lessons on this stuff. I know its the putting on the clothes that would be the toughest for you to handle. You would be surprised how fast you would learn all the stuff that frustrates you now.It might be worth the suffering of wearing clothes. Just don't be surprised if it's some kid teaching this stuff.

Good question, really. I'm a curious sort too, perv.

You'll notice the same thing in searches. In your emails, this string of unrelated nonsense words is just a method of slipping by your spam filter, since the spam filter works on key words, they will use every other word in an attempt to slip past.

Here's an geek article that explains it even better. See there, you're not the first or only one to wonder and ask about it.

"Nonsense Words in Spam...What's the story behind all the weird, nonsensical words that appear in the text of spam emails? Examples: "his acquirements entitled him to the honour. He possessed a large... she was not allowed to proceed. The Admiral's kind urgency... turned him on shore at the very moment, and he has been living with us"

Spam vs. Anti-spam... the war escalates. This is an attempt by spammers to defeat the content filters that the new generation of spam blockers are using. Spam filters based on Bayesian algorithms try to determine the context of words that may be possible spam triggers.

If an email contains little more than "Enlarge your body parts! Click Here to Buy!!!" then it's pretty easy for a program to score those words and zap the message as spam. But if that text is buried in an avalanche of meaningless text that has nothing to do with anything, the job of determining whether or not a message is good or bad becomes much harder. "

Sometimes when doing a search you'll see something similar in the results. Just a string of words, this allows their links to show up in a ton of different keyword searches, and their site is often totally unrelated to your keyword search. I've even noticed that some sites have the programing that automatically inserts your keywords into their result links even though...again...their site is totally unrelated to your keyword search. Crafty.

Re: Wtf?
Not familiar with all the different email accounts, or mobile devices but ordinarily, if you just ignore the spam folder, after a set amount of time, it will all be deleted automatically.

I only rarely ever even look in my spam folder, I only do if I'm expecting an email in my inbox, and have to check to make sure it wasn't filtered as spam.

Hubs, on the other hand, can't resist looking into his spam folder, I don't know why...it's just a thing with him.

Re: Wtf?
Hubs looks at the spam, as guys are curious creatures. True, I just stopped looking at the (gmail )spam folder for weeks, sure enough, after well over 1,000 in there, went back, was all but empty.

Re: Wtf?
I haven't noticed an influx of spam lately. Of course, I get 200-300 spam messages a day. I don't respond to spam messages. Gmail does sort out 99% of them, but a few do still get through. I usually just mark them as spam and then delete them. I go through my spam folder once or twice a year, but if someone from school is going to be emailing me, I tell them to call or text me just after they send the email so that I know to look for it, just in case it does go into my spam folder.
