Horrific crash
In FL Sunday morning. At least 9 killed and several vehicles burned. Some with the people inside.
The crash was caused by fog and heavy smoke from a fire authorities think was set. [There wasn't another legitimate reason]

Re: Horrific crash
I was in one of those exact same crashes years ago.
My first crash was at 3am on my way to work at the Post Office. A quarter-ton truck was at a dead stop in front of me. It was so foggy and smokey. I looked up and saw it's lights, and put on the brakes. I slide under the truck, all the up to my windshield. His bumper cracked my windshield, then he started moving, catching my hood, and pulling it into what looked like an accordion.
I pulled off the road, and a second car almost hit the truck. In the dark, I hitched a ride to the hospital close by where there were others who had been injured. A police officer spoke to me. He attempted to help someone, and couldn't find his car for awhile due to the smoke/fog.
That morning I called my dad to come get me. We went my the car, took pictures. Now the sun was coming up and we were heading South on Hwy 27. There was still smoke and fog, and we see some guy running down the side of the road.."Stop, stop!"
A Northbound semi couldn't see and drove into the Southbound lane crashing into several car. A mess real mess!
My understanding Mr. Ben Hill Griffin was burning off his orange groves, combined with the fog... equals multiple crashes.

Re: Horrific crash
They said the authorities had just opened the road back up. I think the main problem is they feel pressure to open these roads so people wont be inconvenienced even though they know it isn't safe.I would bet almost everyone has a story about something similar in their area. I know I can remember several.Safety has to come before convenience. I would rather get somewhere safe and late than not get there at all. I worry every time someone I know is on the road. It has gotten so the roads are like sending your loved ones into a war zone.Common sense has to be brought back into the world.
Many times people trust the authorities to make a decision to close a road if it isn't safe. But they wont close it because the businesses and general public would go nuts. We see it all the time. Some times they even go as far as declaring a "state of emergency but still don't close roads. How many times have we had a "state of emergency" declared that clearly states "You should not be on the road unless you are essential personnel and have proper equipment on your vehicle" Yet people say " I have to go to work or school, or a friends party, etc....". They should enforce the laws! If its a state of emergency you can't fucking drive! You know damn well the city and highway authorities will be sued over that accident in Florida and people will lose jobs for opening that highway back up.That will not fix the problem.

Re: Horrific crash
It's just nice to know that Massachusetts isn't the only place where driver's don't slow for anything. We got a a dusting of snowy sleet last week, which slowed tractor-trailers to a 45-mile an hour crawl, but some cars looked at the slowed traffic as a passing free zone weaving in and out of the four lanes. At one point, I saw what I thought was an ambulance ahead of me pulling over, but turned out to be a Saab 9-3 doing 360's off the highway.

The safer they make cars, the worse people drive.

That's why we should all get used to driving around in bumper cars...
