Music . Your top 10 and why?
I was watching the VH1 show where they listed the top 100 musicians of all time according to the music world. They had asked musicians themselves to vote.I guess the list was pretty much predictable.

What I really found interesting was the reasons many of the musicians themselves gave for choosing who they did.

I also loved listening to all the clips and realized how much I needed to update my ipod play-lists.I am sure we can all go through the list and agree to disagree with at least the order of the list for many of the musicians. But I understood why they were on the list after listening to the musicians give their reasons.

So I put it to you. Name your top 5 or 10 but give you reasons why you put them on your list and in the order you put them in. Dig deep you might be surprised who has influenced you and how far back they go.Some might be predictable some might surprise us.

Re: Music . Your top 10 and why?
these are all just my own opinion..

#6 the Monkees--not bad for a bunch of no name musicians put together for a tv show. (you still here their music on radio today)
#5 Van Halen (older)--they opened up a whole new world of music for me in the 80's.
#4 Garth Brooks--opened my eyes to the fact that country music doesn't always have to be twangy/whiny crap (which i seem to enjoy now...)
#3 Guns n' Roses--proof that looks aren't everything (i used to judge whether or not i would like a band based purely on image, i thought bands that wore make-up were all junk, until i heard "Welcome to the Jungle" )
#2 Stevie Ray Vaughan--proved that you can overcome drugs and alcohol and make awesome music (to bad his life was cut short)
#1 Brian Setzer--dares to defy the odds and record a totally different type of music. first with his rock-a-billy styles of the Stray Cats, then revitalized the swing music for a while with the Brian Setzer Orchestra

forgot to mention John Mellencamp--he's been able to keep up with the modern style.
also, this may sound funny, but Weird Al Yankovic--has had a big influence on me as well...no matter what the music style is, he always seems to find a song to parody, and does well at it.

Re: Music . Your top 10 and why?
The way I see this, I dont look at it as an "All Time" thing, but rather of their era. Rock and Roll had been around for a long time before it died a few years back, but its sound evolved incredibly and was defined by their individual decades. Now I dont list these because they're my favorites (Some I really dont care for at all) but mostly because of their contributions to define an era of Rock.

2000's

Rock really kind of lost its way in the new millenium. Radio Station formats had begun to pay more attention in the previous 15 years to rap, boy bands and anyone that was on American Idol. The most popular emerging format though has been Country. Hardcore fans have always been loyal to Hank Williams, Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings etc. However, in the 90's, Artists such as Garth Brooks and Vince Gill brought more of a Rock and Roll flare to the format and rather than being called Country Western, Its simply been called "Country". Most new Country music is no longer twangy depressing songs about a guy whose girl ran off with some one else; his dog ran away and he lost his job. Todays songs are filled with brilliant lead guitar riffs from the likes of such excellent players as Brad Paisley and Keith Urban.
And even though Ive been listening to more "country", I'm not 100% sold on it. But to me, it seems like Rock has found a new home in Nashville.

Re: Music . Your top 10 and why?
Yes it was a Newbie response. I love it. That's why I love these types of responses. Not just a list but an explanation as well. I agree that the list should have people that made a difference and influenced the music of the world. That doesn't mean you have to like the person or the music they play. I don't listen to Willie Nelson but that doesn't mean I don't get him or his music. I definitely lean to the classic rock when it comes to my favorites. But you hear classical influence all over it so you cant say it wasn't important. Maybe you can even tell which classical genius influenced you favorite rocker if you listen to the music enough. Maybe I should say if you really love music you have to respect all of it. It is an art. It will always change and it should.

Re: Music . Your top 10 and why?
I've left this alone for a reason. 10 is not enough and 1000 would take way to long. I love story tellers and those that can make me laugh, e.g. Jimmy Buffet and Lyle Lovett. Artists you've never heard of, Chris Duarte, Terrell. Blues, Buddy Guy, Lonnie Mack, Muddy Waters, Robert Cray. Icons of Rock, The Rolling Stones, Santana, Queen. Guitar Heros Eric Clapton, Jimmy Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughn. 70's Funk, George Clinton, Earth, Wind and Fire. Punk The Ramones, The Clash. New Wave Billy Idol, Devo. '80 Hair bands, Night Rider, Def Leppard. Old Country Waylon Jennings, Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson. New Country Tim Mcgraw, Travis Tritt, Faith Hill. 90's Grunge Nirvana, Green Day. Classical composers Mozart, Bethoven, Bach. Jazz George Benson, Quincy Jones. Folk singers Bob Dylan, Joannie Mitchell. Guys who did their own thing, Frank Zappa. Angry Chick singers Alaina Morissette, Angry Guy Bands Cracker. Guilty pleasures Bee Gees, Abba, The GoGos. Girls I am/was hot for Joan Jett, Pat Benetar, the Bangles, ....

Kam, I liked your categorization. I cant believe I forgot to include Queen in the 70's and Alanis Morrissette in the 90's in my Newbie-esque response.

And yes Newb, I have seen that commercial. The first thing that came to MY mind is that I wouldnt want to be either one of those actors!

Re: Music . Your top 10 and why?
The problem is the list will be ever changing....
Although it should be.

You hope that every song and every artist if they are artists will do something to change (good or bad) or at least contribute to your mind in some way.Even looking at a painting should do that to you. Isn't that what art is meant to do. Weather you like it or not these things add something to your life every time you come across them.

I was thinking about how some songs can bring you back to a place and/or time in your life in an instant. The Boys Are Back In Town always makes me think of a place I went to my whole life but more specifically this club that had bands play every weekend. You could hear the music echo off the lake. I think every band that ever played there seemed to play The Boys Are Back In Town. Or maybe it was just my favorite bands. I just know I smile when I hear that song because I still love that place so much.

How when someone sings a certain song it sparks an emotion so strong it can bring you to tears just knowing what they are really singing about. Example would be Tears from heaven, by Eric Clapton.I almost cry every time I hear it. It's such an incredibly moving song but, knowing it came from the death of his young son and how he died makes me cry as a parent. Some songs make me think of people.Music is an amazing thing. The song Wild Thing makes me laugh because for some unknown reason I have had more bands sing that to me. I mean even bands that I didn't know I have had guys jump off stage or pull me on stage to sing that to me. I never knew why. I really was very quiet unless you knew me well. It is really strange. lol

Bohemian Rhapsody always makes me think of Junior High school. It was big when I was in Junior High and we all loved it. And who hasn't been in a bar when Paradise By the Dashboard Light comes on and hasn't had the entire bar start singing it? You know you have!Meatloaf has a few songs like that come to think of it.

Harry Chapin and Billy Joel... If you love guys that are true story tellers that everyone can relate two these two are so at the top of my list. I have been fortunate enough to have seen Harry Chapin in a very small venue and it was like sitting in a living room with your buddies and having a big singalong. Billy Joel does that same thing in a huge venue like Madison Square Garden or The Meadowlands arena. You almost have to remind yourself that you are not friends with these guys (Although I always felt I could be.lol)because you relate to them so well and they make you feel so comfortable when you are at their concerts. It is a shame Harry Chapin died so young I think he would have kept going for years in the music world.Meatloaf has the same vibe at least in a small venue which is the only way I have ever seen him. He chats with the people in the audience like Harry Chapin and Billy Joel.

Bob Dylan was my first concert and Yes was my second. Yep I didn't fool around I went for the big guys right out. Promoter seats at yes I was practically on stage.lol I get mesmerized at concerts. I think music is an amazing thing. Although at the time I did think Bob Dylan was a bit strange. Actually I guess that hasn't changed much.I love the Beach Boys as well. I am trying to remember if it was the Beach Boys or the Monkeys that I took my kids to right after my daughter was born. She was 4 days old. Either way the concerts were only a week apart.

I missed working as a production assistant at a Rolling Stones Concert because I was to busy getting laid to answer my phone so I missed the call. I am still pissed about that. lol I regret never getting to see the Beatles but they broke up when I was an infant so I didn't have much say in that one.

I have to say Elton John is another favorite of mine. I love the influence he has had and his versatility. He has done everything from Rock, Pop to cartoons and Broadway. You don't have to like his personality but you have to admit he has a lot of talent.

Don't forget all the one hit wonders that have added so much to music history.

Re: Music . Your top 10 and why?
Ive probably told this story before.. but here it is again. I go to a bluegrass festival in Winfield Kansas every year. Its a weeklong festival, 1000's of ppl camp out & hear musicans from all over, lots of big stars got their start there, Emmy Lou Harris, & i saw the Dixie Chicks when they were 16 yrs old there. Anyway, i was at my campsite playin guitar with a few friends, & this guy walked up & asked if he could sit in, we said sure, pull up a chair. We played for about 45 minutes, John McCrutchin was on stage,(hes awesome on a hammered dulcimer), after finishing a song he said, "I think i see a old friend out there... tom come up & help me with a song" The guy that had been playing guitar with us said "I'm being paged" & he shook our hands & left. It was Tom Chapin... Harry Chapins brother. We'd been playing guitar with Tom Chapin & we had no idea

Re: Music . Your top 10 and why?
NRG That is a great story and I believe that would happen a lot. I saw him when he was with his brother Harry Chapin. As I said it was like sitting around in your living room with friends. That's just the vibe some musicians have and I think still feel when they play.

I think it was Bruce Springsteen that was in a park when this couple was sitting on a bench. The guy was playing guitar and singing. Bruce Springsteen sat down and asked if they would mind him hangin out and playing awhile. This couple was all over TV a few days later when people found out about it. They said at first the hadn't realized who it was.(They obviously were not from NJ. lol)But you have to love it when these things happen. I bet these guys love being able to do it and be just like a regular guy and hang out with people and enjoy the experience as well.

Just as a little side note. The cops approached this man on the boardwalk and asked him for his ID. (Yes they do this shit here because they are board!)He didn't have any. They arrested him for vagrancy. When he got to the police station the captain who was a bit older was very embarrassed. The idiots just arrested Bob Dylan and they had no idea who he was. All because he didn't carry a wallet.Yeah that was all over the paper "Bob Dylan arrested by local police" . They had no idea who he was. LMAO They will never live that down. Maybe they should hire cops older than 12 down.
