I hope you don't drive a car then; 30,797 Americans died as a result of road traffic accidents in 2009 and that was a good year (>20% lower than any of the previous 15 years)

Re: cruise ships
The regulations on cruise ship safety is at best a joke and has been talked about for several years now. Because they have to deal with maritime laws as well as various counties, coastguard etc. it gets very confusing and it is mostly self monitored. That being said the safety record on cruises has actually been much better than you might think. The main reason being is that if people start dieing it is bad for business.
The reason it seems so scary to most people is the fact that if a plane, bus, cruise, train or anything that carries a large number of people at a time gets into some type of accident its difficult to say "its just one accident and considering how many planes, buses, trains and cruises there are on a given day that's not bad." The problem being that one accident can injure or kill hundreds if not thousands of people in that one accident. Of course the media plays it up as well so it just feeds the fears. The facts are that more people die in their homes, crossing the street or in a car accident individually than probably all those large people movers combined in a given year.
In the case of this cruise ship in Italy considering it had several thousand people and a minimal amount even got hurt let alone killed. That's amazing.Of course if its a person you loved then even one is to many but to be totally objective a car accident on the Garden State parkway during rush would most likely kill more people than the ones that died in this cruise accident.Hell in my accident alone there were seven people with injuries and two cars when it was all said and done. (Someone hit us when our car went into the spin) and that was only two cars as I said.I believe the reported number of dead and or missing in the Italian cruise accident is sixteen. I also believe they said there were over four thousand people on board at the time of the accident. I believe they said it was also due totally to the Captain basically fucking up in a big way, and not mechanical failure. (Although I am surprised they came to that conclusion so quickly)
I can only speak for myself when I say this accident would not deter me from taking a cruise.I would add that I do believe they should have much better regulation and be accountable for safety no matter how good they think they have been they still have had many reports of security issues on cruises because of lack of regulation.

Re: cruise ships
Newbie---Comparing this to crashes on GSP is something a person looking to legitimitize something does.
There's no excuse for this at all. The captain was stupid enough to volentarily drive the ship too close to shore so a chef could have a photo op for his family. How stupid is that?
Putting people lives at risk for no real reason. Nothing but foolishness.

Re: cruise ships
OOMG I'm not saying this is acceptable. This Captain is an major ass-whole and should go to jail.I was referring to the safety records of cruise ships and was trying to make the point that I would not be afraid to take a cruise because of this incident. I have heard this schmuck has changed his version of what happened several times. They are looking for some 25 year old woman he was supposedly hanging out with when this happened. Maybe he was getting a blowjob and wasn't paying attention for all we know. The last claim I heard he made was that he had planed this route and had it mapped out and had done it before without incident and the cruise line was well aware of it all. Being out on boats and living by the water my entire life I do understand that tides, currents and even coral reefs can change but I seriously doubt the cruise line would let him take a chance like that with a multi-million dollar cruise ship and over 4,000 people.
I do find it amazing how few casualties there were. I also hear today that the rocks they are on are only about 50 feet deep which I knew but, if the ship shifts just right it will go off a 300 foot deep cliff and that can be a much bigger disaster. That is one reason they keep pulling the divers out when it even shifts a bit.

Re: cruise ships
I've not wanted to follow this story, however, I've heard bits and pieces. They found the 25 year old woman whom accompanied the captain to dinner, but what will her testimony, honest or not, prove?
My issue is regardless of the captain's total cowardice and disregard for human lives and safety, I also hold the members of crew responsible to see the protocols are followed and safety measures practiced.
Was there not one person able to step up, report the captain and avoid this whole incident????

Re: cruise ships
He will not be the only one charged. When the Staten Island ferry accident happened they charged several people when it was all finished. Many times they don't tell the public what thecplan is and let all involved hang themselves with their stories. Then they arrest them and follow up with charges. You can't t say the whole crew is at fault. After all most people got off without even a scratch. They haven't mentioned the second in comand or other crew yet but I'm sure they will. As sad as this is it could have been much worse. The Staten Island ferry crash was a horror seen compared to how calm most of the people on the cruise stayed.

Re: cruise ships
I'm not sure if they can make charges stick. Of course they did on a US college student, so anything is possible.
I think by the time the passengers and crew get done suing the cruise line and the captian, neither should be around.

Re: cruise ships
Kiss not all that is in a contract makes it so.Its like when you see things that say we arr not responsable for lost or stolen items or damage to your property at a parking garage. It doesn't hold in court. Some laws over ride what people post. I've been down this road and won. People are under the delusion if it says it in writting it makes it a fact. Besides this cruise company in the eyes of the law will have been negligent which nullifies some things. However you are dealing with maritime and international laws. They can be messy. But they would go bankrupt before anyone sees a dime if the law allows.

Re: cruise ships
I once knew a girl (and yes she was blonde) who offered to pay for gas and expenses if I would drive her to Puerto Rico. She said this while playing pool, just as I knocked in the first stripey-ball. Anyone can tell you, If you get the stripey-ones, the game is almost assured to be won...
