1 True Love refers to God
2 Turtle Doves refers to the Old and New Testaments
3 French Hens refers to Faith, Hope and Charity, the Theological Virtues
4 Calling Birds refers to the Four Gospels and/or the Four Evangelists
5 Golden Rings refers to the first Five Books of the Old Testament, the "Pentateuch", which gives the history of man's fall from grace.
6 Geese A-laying refers to the six days of creation
7 Swans A-swimming refers to the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit, the seven sacraments
8 Maids A-milking refers to the eight beatitudes
9 Ladies Dancing refers to the nine Fruits of the Holy Spirit
10 Lords A-leaping refers to the ten commandments
11 Pipers Piping refers to the eleven faithful apostles
12 Drummers Drumming refers to the twelve points of doctrine in the Apostle's Creed

I know I'm not the most religious person but I think that's a stretch by people that want it to be more than it is, just like people who find secret messages if they play records backwards,or people seeing Christ in bird crap.Sorry Kiss I don't buy it.

Sorry hon, Kiss is likely right.
Catholics in England were persecuted in England from 1558 to 1829. Church of England was against any Catholic practice and the practicing Catholics, if caught, met with a horrible fate. Twelve days of Christmas was written in England to help young Catholics understand the canons of their faith better. They were supposed to learn it by heart, for any written document could cause immense trouble.

Yeah... yeah... and play it backward and it says you're all going to hell. lol. I'm kidding. I didn't even think the song was that old.See that's why they never let people talk religion because it gets so complicated then the nuts do start seeing Jesus on toast. I might give in on the song but the toast and bird crap NO WAY!

Seeing faces, that I believe is called "motorizing"
It comes from our ancient ancestors who roamed about the wilderness. It was extremely important to be able to recognize threats for safety, and prey to hunt. It's just built into us, the instinct like ability to "scan" our environment for eyes, nose, mouth...to be able to spot it before it sees us. Just a piece of survival DNA.
It's not crazy to see a cloud that looks like a rabbit, a face in the moon or a grilled cheese sandwich. But to see these kind of things as something divine...that's a personal thing
The origin of the song, it's a theory, but the evidence to support that theory seems sound to me. Anytime there is persecution, there will be codes and symbolism.

Ok I thought I'd weigh in on this thread. I must agree what Kiss shared is exactly how I was taught. The 12 days of Christmas is a song, which is founded in symbolism. Sorry to burst your commercialization of Christmas in getting all those "expensive" gifts. The gifts we receive from the 12 days of Christmas are more of true spiritual worth. But not to discredit my dear friend, Newbie in sharing her thoughts, thanks for your thoughts and in my parody of the song ( Free please get your guitar ready to accompany me ) ... It'll always end with "a New-bie har - ar -arp-ing" LOL. Newbie please don't try playing that backwards.

Dark I wouldn't even try singing it forward.lol I get that someone can see a shape of something I was referring to the fact that people make it into something that it isn't. The bird crap thing was a real story.
There is an over pass that during a rain storm had bird crap running down the wall underneath. Someone decided it looked like Jesus or the Virgin Mary and next thing you know there were thousands of people trying to touch it and pray to it. I think its dangerous. I get that sometimes it comes from a desperate need that some people have. I feel bad for those people. I don't think that others should encourage that behavior. I think in the long run those people will be hurt and disappointed, especially if you let it go on for a long time. Then there are the people that make money off those believers by charging to come there or sell a scraping off it or some other weird thing. Those people should be locked up for taking advantage of desperate people but there is no law against it.Not everything that looks like something or sounds like something is planed. People need to understand the word coincidence.
