Giving Back...
Each year my children and I go to the store the week after Thanksgiving and we each pick up hygeine items, a nice warm blanket and comfy pillow. We buy a pair of shoes in their size and put it all together in a duffle or backpack. We take these bags to the Salvation Army where a friend of mine volunteers. He makes certain they find their way to someone who needs it.
My daughter also goes once a month to a nursing home to read to the elderly so during the holidays we spend a day baking for her book buddies. Which I must admit has been a true pleasure for all of us, she has been "adopted" by so many wonderful people. I have yielded more recipes from these people that I treasure.
Giving a little of our time during the holidays and year round means so much to so many...it broadens horizons and feels so wonderful.
Is there a tradition that you do to volunteer or give back in your community?

Re: Giving Back...
I am very proud of your children for their kindness and generosity. I think it is the best thing for a kid. I suggested it once to a girlfriend of mine for her son, but in all honesty the suggest was more for her. Spoiled bitch!
I generally give donations for meals, and contribute time at the Metropolitan Ministries, where ever I am needed.
This year, I fostered a pup. She was due for euth. A young couple brought her to me. Alyssa was shocked, because she came right into my house, picked up not one, but several toys and started to playing. This is something she couldn't get her to do. She ate all my food, and jumped on my furniture!
Cooper (mine) and her are doing pretty good, except jealous over food, and me. I didn't get any sleep for 2 nights.
Oh man. I think I went to bed a 11pm. up a few times. Copper, is good with her til night when she has crawled up next to me. Last night they both lay next to each for a few minutes at lest.
And you see, it seems I am already in the process of spoiling her real bad. I was up for awhile at 530am. They play real rough. They were gonna have a Rescue Roundup (getting the dogs together to try to adopt out) this morning downtown, but cancelled it. Good thing, I just woke up for the I don't know how many times so far.
She's eaten 3 times so far today. Was very underweight. When they found her, she had been in a crate for 3 days.
She is about 40 -50 lbs. a big head. Copper fits under her. They play real rough. She is totally not aggressive.. it is mine who is growling. She is quiet but a good watch dog, and just wants to be loved. She sticks her big head in my lap to be petted. I hope we can find her a good home!
She caught a squirrel in my patio yesterday. Got it in her mouth even. It was wet and scared, but no punctures or anything broken. Then the damn thing crawled up to the top of the screen and wouldn't come down. They are strong little buggers. It took 8 hours till I got that thing out!!!!!!

Re: Giving Back...
Very good topic! Without details, trust me, I have reasons to give back, I've only shared with Chazzy. Nuff said. This year, I did ALL the prep, cooking, serving, and clean-up. It was a hell a lot of fun, and enjoyed every minute of it. And got to deliver some to other's. Wanna do it again next month, year, and from here on out.

I believe in "paying it forward" so if you have been the recipient of the generosity of others then that means someone has touched your heart. Giving back is the best way to open your heart, good for you!

Giving back is the best way to open your heart, good for you! Not really "good for" me Jules, I enjoyed it, and made me feel good. Selfish huh? After where I'd been in my life, having to look up to see down, to get to here where I maintain, well, lets just say, "stabillity" (yuk, yuk, yuk), I get to give back. And I do, and will continue to do it, dammit!. Again, I'm a selfish bastard look at my own fun, so nanny, nanny, nanny, ha, ha, ha.

Re: Giving Back...
I always believed in teaching children about giving back and working with people who aren't as fortunate as we are. Although I don't have the money to give anymore I have the time and will. You don't need money to help people. There are countless ways. I couldn't list all the ways that my family participated nor would I want to because it isn't about that.
It's kind of funny that I always see the same reaction from people that have volunteered or done something else that helps someone for the first time. As well as the people being helped being happy the people doing the helping always feel so great. I know we've always enjoyed it in our family.
I laughed at your story kiss. I am allergic to cats but I have two. I am not sure if its because I want to be charitable or because I am the worlds biggest sucker and my kids know it! It started with my son adopting a kitten as a rescue from a shelter . I was not going to have to worry because he was going to keep the kitten in his room (It's a huge room) and my son would be moving soon and taking the cat. Well the son moved and for a while the cat went but he worked his way back here.(The cat not my son.)The second kitten is another rescue from the street, then an abuse home so I was going to "FOSTER" the kitten for a few weeks or maybe a month. They knew as soon as I saw him I would fall in love and not ever let him leave. That's actually how the other cat came back. My son brought him over to "Play" with the kitten. I told him to leave the cat for a while because he was working so much and going to school and the cat was missing all the attention he used to get. So now I have two cute cats, tearing eyes, a runny nose, five golden rings and a partridge in a pear tree.....

Re: Giving Back...
Ah yes cats. I love cats, they taste a lot like chicken. JUST KIDDING! I have 2 cats, 2 chihuahua's, all raised since suckled. If ya wanna see this rough ole boy melt, just let me hold a kitten. I was raised mainly around cats. My youngest cat, Casper, (2 years), mostly white, with cream siamese markings, (siamese in the wood-pile somewhere). She is petite, light wieght, soft fur, affectinate (love the hell outta her "daddy" . And is boarder-line deformed. Prominate curved back, thin hips, back legs, at times, will spread like a new born baby deer for stability, and not the most graceful animal. Non-aggressive, reserved, at times I have to rescue her from the other "kids", when they get too rough with her. Oh, and she loves "daddy" kiss's. Her "sister", Pretty Girl, is 3 and a half, dark grey, with white trim, paws, belly, prettiest face ever, but 8 1/2 lbs. Basic cat and personallity. Loves food, and will actually chase me, yell and swat at me for her "kitty treats". Would die if anything ever happened to the dogs and cats. Well, have I gone off topic enough? Oh ya, and oh well. Just ignore the ole perve, he's off his medication.

Local food pantries. I can't stand to think of people...families with children going without something as basic as hot meals.
