Well, the Time is Here
I don't go out to the stores, or shopping much, I think I've done my quota over my lifetime. I do turn on the tube, and hear it in the background.
So, Saturday I heard my first Christmas commercial. It was for a Glades air freshener. I think my favorite Christmas commercials are by Publix. They involve food, families, and moving animated Christmas characters.

Re: Well, the Time is Here
I am not a big fan of shopping unless its shoes or more persisly boots. But I have to go more often than I care too. I went to the mall with my daughter tonight to get a birthday gift for her friend and a pair of boots for her(How could I say no to that.)I was not able to walk around . It was just one of those lovely painful days I have. Especially when the colder weather hits. So I tell her I will meet her at the center of the mall by the couches they have set up there. I get to the couches and realize they have the whole damn Christmas set up Santa picture op and all!
When you shop they try to give you a coupon to come back on black Friday. I am the first to use any type of discount I can get. I hate and almost refuse to pay retail for anything, however there is NO way in hell you will get me to shop on black Friday! I am normally done with my holiday shopping by Thanksgiving. This year I am a bit behind but I still am not going to a fucking mall on Black Friday. I love the internet. I wont have to go to any mall.

The Internet it the BEST!!!!!! Two years ago, when my dad died, I became so incredibly depressed by cruel and insensitive family members. A couple of good hours of retail therapy made me feel so much better.
I got some great deals 50%, 60%, 75%" off on great quality children's clothing, baby items, book, and wedding gifts. Sears, JC Penny, K-Mart, Overstock, and Diapers. Shipping was fast, and some free.

Internet almost exclusively for me......I worked retail for many years, and we'd start getting our Christmas stock in July...loads of it. It would go out in late August sometimes but the problem was till then, where to store all this shit? (I was head of shipping and receiving at the time) When working the sales floor the last week is UGLY as people start the last minutes rush to find, whatever...God I hated that!

I think it is a hassle if you make it a hassle or put pressure on yourself. The idea of a gift can be very broad. As far as being a time for gift giving, I guess it is what ever is in your heart. Christmas is a time to get together with friends or family.
It involves sharing, a gift could be to share a bottle of wine, or your best dish. The gifts I give are to be unique, necessary, fun, educational, or aligned with Christmas. I give out special Christmas ornaments, candles, decorations, etc. And, I've even been know to give prank gifts (toys). Or, I give someone a card letting them know I purchased a gift or a dinner for a needy child or family in their name.
If they are disappointed, I am spending my time with the wrong people.

I like the idea for the gift card. I prefer giving people gifts when they aren't expected. Like when they actually need something. I like helping people out that way.

Re: Well, the Time is Here
Okay...so Sunday we were in a mall in St. Louis (thought about hitting the big celebratory parade...but a million people jammed into downtown STL kept me away...). My daughter absolutely HAS to go to Hollister anytime she's in a mall (it is some kind of a requirement for 16 year olds...they also seem to have Hollister GPS built into their frontal lobe). While she's shopping, I COULD go out into the mall somewhere and browse Radio Shack or something but I prefer to sit in the leather furniture that is arranged in the middle of the store and have the taut and emaciated teens who work there give me weird looks. Added bonus...it embarrasses my daughter to DEATH! So, anyway, as I'm sitting there, this surf tune comes on (one in the constant string of surf tunes that they play in Hollister...another reason I like to sit in there) but it was a CHRISTMAS surf tune! Yeah, yeah...I was a bit put off with a Christmas tune the day before Halloween, but it was CATCHY! I'm pretty sure that it was NOT the Beach Boys...it didn't really sound like them and I have their Christmas Album. The refrain had a line in there about "Santa was surfing and shooting the curl...he said he had some time before he traveled 'round the world."
Can anybody help me on this thing? Who's the band? What's the name of the tune? I did a search for that line and didn't come up with anything. It was pretty catchy...and I do like the Rock 'n Roll Christmas Tunes.
Okay...yeah, I'm totally disgusted by how early this is all happening...but it was CATCHY!! (In the interest of full disclosure, I'm going to see the Mannheim Steamroller Christmas Concert this Saturday night...yeah, I might need help...what is happening to me??)
Ooh, let's play this one: what is the best Rock 'n Roll Christmas Tune? My vote would have to be the "Little Drummer Boy" duet with David Bowie and Bing Crosby. That thing is AWESOME! Close second, although WAY overplayed, is Springsteen with "Santa Claus is Comin' to Town".
Yeah...I definitely need help...

Re: Well, the Time is Here
Hollister makes some really nice men's cologne Luv2.My 16 year old hates that store. Or I should say she hates the "kind of kids that hang out there." She says they are all skinny size 0 snooty girls that all dress exactly the same. It's like the anti Hot Topic.lol I like it but I can't stay in there more than 3 minutes unless I have ear plugs. For some reason the Hollister in our mall blasts the music so loud its like going to a concert and standing in front of the speakers. And for some reason there is a group of kids that seem to just hang out at that store who are a bit obnoxious but I haven't seen it in other malls that have Hollister so maybe it is just here and these kids need to get a life.
If you think you have it bad and get sick of Christmas songs, think about this. How many Chanukah songs do you know. Now how many of them are any good? Now imagine how many times I had to listen to them due to the fact that there are so few.It is depressing. By the eighth day I want to burn the damn CD!
Kam isn't it nice that people all around the world celebrate your birthday? When you were a kid did you wounder why you didn't get all the presents people bought for that day? My son and daughter thought St Patrick's day was for my son Pat's birthday and he thought it was awesome that they had a parade for him. lol

It is awesome. I remember seeing it the first time it aired in 1977. I was only 14, and it was the Bing Crosby Christmas Special, featuring David Bowie. I even had good taste back then. I've pulled it up on youtube several times since.

Re: Well, the Time is Here
Hey Newb!
Here in flyover country, they have pretty much eliminated kids "hanging out" at malls. The roving packs of teens that used to terrorize those places are now hustled out the door. Lots of strict security and rules in place against loitering and "unaccompanied minors" are being heavily enforced. They are defining minors as anyone under 18. Retailers started to relize that the kids weren't buying...they were just "hanging out". When the kid comes to the mall with mom and dad, that's when the bucks get spent. A lot of kids WORK at the malls...and you see a lot of them there with one or more parents, but you rarely see any kids just "hanging out".
Every Hollister I've ever been to blasts the tunes. I think that is a company-wide policy. I was a live deejay for 23 years so I kind of like it...reminds me a of a gig. Around here, logoed stuff...Hollister and Abercrombie...is the standard uniform for just about any teen girl. This is cornfed farm country...I don't think we have any size "0" girls around here...outside of Chicago (whole different world, there). My daughter is tall and very pretty...but by no means a "girlie-girl" or a size "0". She's a basketball player who thinks the cheerleaders are snooty. But they ALL wear the logos. We have an agreement...I will buy her clothes from Target, JCPenney and Wal-mart (in other words, the stuff she doesn't want). SHE has to come up with the cash for the 30 dollar T-shirts with A&F on them, or the jeans that come pre-ripped. I refuse to pay the premium prices just because it came from a mall or has the right logo on it. She'll spend a night babysitting the neighbor kids and make 25 or 30 bucks. I ask her if she really wants to blow an entire night's pay for one stupid T-shirt...and she DOES! I keep telling her that real life is going to be a huge shock...rent, the car payment, insurance, food...will all take precedence over the clothes and she will be happy that you can buy a three pack of underwear for 5 bucks at Wal-mart.
But let me get down off my soapbox...
BTW: The kids that go to Hot Topic are all the scary, dark wannabe goth guys and girls around here. They dye their hair jet black, wear the black eye makeup and hang out on the smoker's corner down the block from the High School. Did you ever see the "South Park" where all of the goth kids were mad because the vampire kids were showing up and stealing their niche? They found out that the surge in vampire kids was due to the fact that a Hot Topic had opened in the mall...very funny stuff.
LOL on the Jewish Holiday tunes!! My biggest client is Jewish, and has been a good friend for 25 years. He is always telling me he's jealous of "you gentiles and your 10,000 Christmas songs." He once made me spit out coffee when he said, "you'd think with all of the Jews in the entertainment business that we'd have a few guys who could come up with some decent holiday tunes." But then he said, "I guess, aside from Adam Sandler, who's ever made money with a Channukah song?"
The ONLY Channukah song that I really know is "Draydel". I've heard a few others. In his stores he plays mainly secular Christmas but there is the occasional Chanukkah mixed in...VERY rarely.
Have a great Eight Days, Newb!!

I heard that exact same thing! I had it on TiVo so I went back through and played it a couple of times to see just what the heck they were saying and it took me a while to realize that it was "a 4G Wonderland". Gotta tell you, an orgy wonderland sounds like a hell of a Christmas...just not with the weird looking elves with the pink facial hair (you just have to see the commercial...)
As someone who's worked in advertising since I was 15...I'm guessing they knew exactly what they were saying and how it sounded and did it just to get this kind of a reaction...made you listen!

I would prefer to at least start digesting my Thanksgiving turkey, stuffing, and yams before having Christmas thrown in my face full bore. I think these marketing campaigns are ridiculous and a waste of money, and make mental notes of all stores, companies, and organizations advertising this early so that I won't give them any of my business. Others might feel differently, but this is my opinion.

Yes, the advertising and commercials are crap. And, talk about once the turkey is cut, eaten, and the wrapping paper ist tossed in the garbage.. Christmas is over!
So, I will say in defense of the Holiday, and it's true meaning, 2 months of Christmas carols is not a bad thing.
Now is a good time to begin Holiday cheer...

I love the holidays! My decorating and shopping will be done by November 30th because I enjoy spending time with the children in my life baking, doing gingerbread houses and enjoying friends and family. I love the parties and everything that Christmas is about.
I lost my Mom on Christmas Day a few years back so it is always a bittersweet time of the year for our family. We try to pack in as much fun and love as we can...

Re: Well, the Time is Here
Luv2, Thank you. Funny how things can be different just by location. The kids aren't as bad as my daughter thinks but they do have a bit of an attitude I will agree with her on that. I will also say I have not seen the same in other Hollisters in other areas. Our Hot Topic is not as Goth as some either. We live in a pretty white bread area and the parents get nervous if the kids look in the windows of hot topic. In truth they are really community friendly and even help out local kids with bands by promoting their shows and having concerts at the mall for them to showcase. And the kids working there are dressed a bit goth but are very friendly and helpful.
OK Now back to the holiday stuff. I really think about how we get so crazy here with all the ads and music as well as so many stressing about the gifts and bills that come with them. The funny thing is that if you ask my kids what their favorite Christmas was, they will tell you it had nothing to do with any of that. It was a Christmas we had gone to Mexico and spent with some friends. My whole immediate family had gone so it was really nice that we were with them and our friends and it was nothing like what we do here. It was about friends and family and traditions. It was much less commercial. The kids loved the pinatas and the fact that its a big open house. It was amazing. You could hear people singing every wear. In the little town square they have one church. It was so over crowded that people were out in the streets and the doors were open and everyone had their arms around each other even if they didn't know you and they were singing Christmas carols. It was so much fun. My kids couldn't tell you what they got as gifts but could tell you everything else about that Christmas.(Just to clarify for those who might be confused YES we celebrate Christmas and Chanukah in my house)
