Worn a bit thin.
A few things I'm a bit weary of...

Skynard's "Taking care of Business"

Any TV show where a main character plays two roles as their own twin or doppleganger.

Any movie where the evil beast or monster dies, but you know there are fifteen minutes left to the movie which is an obvious tip off that the villian isn't dead yet and will pop up one more time for a finale.

Any movie where a woman discovers her lover/spouse is evil and in the final moments after the terror is finally over she realizes she's pregnant with some sort of demon child.

Any story line where a thoughtful wonderful surprise for their spouse or SO and it's misunderstood as cheating.

Re: Worn a bit thin.
Any show or movie where a huge celebratory cake is knocked over or fallen into as the comedic climax.

Hearing "We Are The Champions" at any sporting event. (I feel the same way about rally towels)

Re: Worn a bit thin.
I can't stand watching a TV show or Movie that claims to be new and you get the Deje vu feeling because it is the same exact story line of a TV show or movie in the past.

And please stop making remakes of old movies! Come up with something new.If they make one more version of its a wonderful life I might throw up. His life wasn't that fucking wonderful. And miracle on 34th street. Really? It wasn't that big in the miracle department so I think we can let that go as well.

Revivals of old plays/musical.Again come up with something new.

Remakes of classic songs especially classic rock songs. Do I really have to say it?....

Is there no one left with originality?

Don't you know all sharks are just waiting for the creepy music to play then they will attack. The only reason we don't have more attacks is because people don't always have those waterproof cases so they can't play the music when they are in the water.

I always thought all those movies were so realistic....So let me understand this....There is not a totally ripped guy single handedly (and shirtless most of the time)going around the world being a macho super hero with machine guns practically part of his arms? Now you've gone and ruined the whole fantasy NRG!

NRG, I never did understand that. You would think they wanted to catch the bad guy but since they go so slow, the only conclusion I can come to is they really working with the bad guy. This way they don't have to catch them. They just say "Look I tried but he was faster than me"

Wandering5tar:You are a seriously sick man. Did I ever mention that is one of the things I always liked about you.For the record your last comment of yours is so true that I can't really argue the point.lol

I don't mind re-makes that much, yeah...some are just a bad idea but it's a chance for some of the classic artist and works to be introduced to yet another generation. It's nice to see really.

Re: Worn a bit thin.
Chazzy...hate to correct you, but "Takin' Care of Business" was Bachman-Turner Overdrive (BTO) although, yeah...that one was pretty thin about ten years ago and they still won't let it go. On the Skynyrd front, that would be both "Freebird" and "Gimme Three Steps" which are both about as worn as my Great Uncle Bert's shiny suit.

I am concerned that there might be a blaming of the bands for these things...don't ever think ill of the band when you get sick of a song ("Shook Me All Night Long" ). These guys usually regard a "hit" as a curse ("Old Time Rock n Roll" ) because they never get recognition for the new stuff and that is all that anybody wants to hear when they are in concert ("Walk This Way" ).

Some bands have just decided to accept that they are "one-hit wonders", that they have nothing musically to contribute to society anymore and that their retirement depends on them milking the living hell out of that one song that they are known for: "YMCA" (Village People), "Shout" (Otis Day and the Nights), "The Twist" (Chubby Checker - and, damn, saw him on Dancing with the Stars doing that one...scary as hell!!) "Don't Worry, Be Happy" (Bobby McFerrin), "Who Let the Dogs Out" (I don't even remember...they gave up REAL quick!).

I do let them slide if they actually had a few great moments on the charts. I've seen Kansas, Styx, REO Speedwagon, Jethro Tull, Alice Cooper, KISS and ZZ Top all on "greatest hits" kinds of tours and they were all a lot of fun. Brian Adams is doing an acoustic tour right now where he does "nothing but the hits" that I'm considering seeing. At least he has a pretty decent catalog to draw from...although I have been known to throw things at radios that start playing "Summer of '69"...even if that is one of the greatest opening couplets in Canadian rock!

Jimmy Buffett would be the odd-ball exception to all of that. He's basically a "one-hit wonder" with "Margaritaville" but he re-wrote that one song into two or three other minor hits and then turned the whole mess into a lifestyle, a state of mind and an EMPIRE! Parrotheads unite!

Damn...am I getting old, or WHAT?!

"You kids! Turn that music down! That is nothing but noise! Back in MY day we had REAL music..."

Oh don't hate to correct me, I don't mind at all! Yep, I am so weary of "Takin' care of Business" but you got the Skynard song I was thinking of, "Gimme Three Steps"
"Old Time Rock n' Roll" is overused by ads, and has become an standard tired oldie for wedding receptions.

Re: Worn a bit thin.
I gotta admit, that confused me too. I knew that it was originally a BTO tune, but I assumed that Skynyrd was covering it, which in my opinion would be a bit of a lame move since it isnt that good a song to begin with.
One band I was in, the lead guitar player insisted that we do Taking Care Of Business and Old Time Rock & Roll. I cringed everytime we played them, but believe it or not, the audiences loved them. I just dont get it

Re: Worn a bit thin.
Jimmy Buffett had 11 songs hit Billboard top 100, I'll have you know. Also Macho Man and In The Navy, helped the Village People stay on the disco scene. Chubby Checker I believe can also Limbo Rock. Otis Day and the Knights went a real band. Animal House made them a career.

But, I think Men at Work did a song called Overkill, that fits this thread.

The music snob and parrothead in me will shut up for now.

Music snob AND Parrothead? A potent combination!! Must resist urge...can't hold back...

AAAAHHHH!! Music geeking out!! Can't help it!! (and this conversation should really be happening behind a bar with several empty beer mugs in front of us...more fun that way...)

Come on, now, Kam..."Cheeseburger in Paradise" and "Volcano" are fun, but they use like half of the Margaritaville backing tracks. "Come Monday" was his first hit but it didn't have that meteoric thing that M-ville had. "Boat Drinks" is actually M-ville played sideways through a processor (without the salt). "Why Don't We Get Drunk and Screw" is fun...so is "Son of a Son of a Sailor" and "Pencil Thin Moustache" (which were never actually "hits" ) and "Changes in Latitudes" was easy-going and friendly, but he just ain't Dylan or even James Taylor for that matter! So, I'll give you, it was more than a couple of minor hits...but they were all pretty minor...the only thing ever top 10 was M-ville (nothing else ever got out of the 30s). M-ville is his "signature" song. I was working at my first radio station in 1981 when "It's My Job" came out and we were supposed to introduce it as "from the guy who brought you Margaritaville." I bow to the ability to turn a lifestyle based on drinking and being lazy into the multimillion dollar behemoth that it has become...and the concerts are a blast...but Jimmy just isn't one of my Desert Island discs. (fun Buffett fact...as a Parrothead you probably already know this..Jimmy has a Bachelor's in both History and Journalism...qualifications that would, of course, lead to a life of drinking and rock'n'roll!)

"Macho Man" actually (not making this up) used the same drum track as YMCA. Not much of a departure there. The formula worked, why mess with it!

Chubby had like 30 songs that charted...but he is living on the "Twist". "Limbo Rock" was a twist-alike, and the Chubster also had some chart action with "Let's Twist Again", "Slow Twistin'", "Twistin' USA" and "Twist it Up"...another man who understands milking the formula!

In my opinion, Men at Work's "one-hit" will always be "Down Under" (with reference to a Vegemite Sandwich)...but "Overkill" was a good tune. Those Aussies never get the recognition that they deserve stateside.

Okay...sorry...I'll stop. Kind of like bumping into Bill Bixby...I don't get mad, I just get all green and music geeky!!!

Kam said: "Otis Day and the Knights went a real band. Animal House made them a career."

Not a real band BEFORE "Animal House" but they now tour almost every year on the basis of, basically, "Shout" as a real band. Never gone to a performance, can't imagine a concert based on one song...I do think they have a caravan kind of thing with other bands from the era of the movie. Another fun fact: the INCREDIBLE Robert Cray (who I saw opening for Huey Lewis on the "Sports" Tour) played guitar for Otis in the movie.

Re: Worn a bit thin.
I only know a handful of Buffet songs, so you guys are way ahead of me regarding his history. However, what the guy has is an amazing fan base. He's not a "great" musician and he doesn't have a great vocal range, but he exudes Cool. And his "Cool" is why he has such amazing fans. I think Jimmy Buffet is more about a way of life that he just happens to sing about. And whether I'm right or wrong, you cant argue that the guy is phenomenally successful.

Re: Worn a bit thin.
Animal House fun fact 2. I was watching an interview with Otis Day. He changed his name after the movie. Dwayne Jessie changed his name to Otis Day because thats how people recognized him. So he ran with it and made a living.

I'm going to catch my Second Wind and have some Boat Drinks on a Livingston Saturday Night.

Re: Worn a bit thin.
"Let's think outside the box on this one."

What box? Who put me, or the company, or whatever in a box...why are we in this damn box? If it is possible to think outside of the box, why don't we just get out of the box and go have a picnic or something and we can have the meeting there...then none of the things that come up in the meeting will be in the box!

Scott Adams, the guy who writes "Dilbert" also does a newsletter every so often where he chronicles what he calls "in-duh-viduals"...these would be the people at your job (yeah, okay, usually the managers) who just aren't completely with it all of the time...or ANY of the time. These are actual quotes from selected inDUHviduals around the US, and they are taking those phrases that are WAY overused and just hacking the hell out of them (enjoy):

"At no time do I ever condone you making changes to improve things in the office."

"Snakes on a Plane - what's that about?"

"Go jump off a lake."

"Keep a stiff upper chin."

"The squeaky wheel gets the spoke."

"I can lead you to horsewater, but I can't make you drink."

"He'd give you the arm off his back."

Announcement in store: "We have a customer by the balls in toys needing assistance." (It repeats.)

"You play ball with me, and I'll scratch yours."

"It's half of one, six dozen of another..."

"We do not have a smoking cow at this point."

"My daughter is as smart as a tack."

"I've got a higher IQ than your little pinky finger."

"If Dad were here right now, he'd be rolling over in his grave."

"Well, it may be the wrong tool for the job, but it is the right tool for the business."

"It's our golden goose. We better figure out how to make her purr."
