Texas Fires
Please keep us in your prayers. Two homes at the end of my block were lost yesterday. My sister has been evacuated from her neighborhood and I have three friends who have lost their homes...please pray for our firefighters and police. Over 400 homes have been lost in an area half an hour from our home. Please send rain!

Re: Texas Fires
I hope all goes well. We have had forest fires, floods, and hurricanes. You can't control some things. Just pack up the important papers and a few other important items and be ready to go. Everything besides your life can be replaced.

That Peshtigo fire happened the same time as the one in Chicago. The Peshtigo one didn't get the coverage because it so remote at that time.

Sending many prayers your way. Fires are horrible all the way around. Not only loss of homes and property, they endanger pets and wildlife, cause motor vehicle accidents, and poor air quality. Hope it gets under control fast!

We are all exhausted from the stress. The fire stopped about a hundred yards from our house. My sister's home was spared also. I have friends who were evacuated on Saturday and still don't know if they have a home. I have two dear friends who know their homes were demolished. We have friends with horse trailers and are evacuating livestock as fast as they can. High schools, churches, and homes destroyed. The lack of rain, the wind, and dry conditions have fueled the destruction. Fire jumped acros rivers and five lane highways, it has been truly unbelievable.
Choppers circle overhead consistently checking for hot spots, fire trucks are parked at the end of my street still as a precaution, curious people from all around are driving through the neighborhoods...all a reminder of what has happened...all a reminder of what could have been...all a reminder to count my blessings!

Thanks everyone. The first two casualties were found today. Unfortunately they stayed behind when everyone was evacuated...the fires have covered the area the size of state of Conneticut...unreal!
Flooding in NJ and drought here...pipeline that water here!
Sleazey, I will try to call you in the next few days...

Re: Texas Fires
Has anyone heard from Julianna? I was watching the news the fires are so bad and only getting worse. Just the other day it was about 500 homes evacuated the news just said it's over 1,500 now.
I'm starting to wonder if there is any place not having some type of disaster happening.

Re: Texas Fires
Hey folks, it has been incredibly hectic. One of my dearest friends found out yesterday her home is gone. They evacuated to a hotel and then we welcomed her family into our home on Wednesday. The notification process is difficult, sometimes taking days for the authorities to get back into the hard hit areas. My friend has a rental property they will be moving into next week. She had to evacuate immediately and was not allowed time to grab personal items. I will tell you this has wrenched our area. Everyone knows someone who lost a home. Children are without the familiar things and cannot grasp that everything is gone, adults are wondering around with glazed overlooks in their eyes.
Yes, it is "just" stuff they lost but it was what made a home, their home, their familiar items...some of these areas were quite poor and don't have insurance...I realize WN is not a place for religion, but we need prayers and positive thoughts.
Hugs to all of you!

Re: Texas Fires
Julianna We are thinking of you . Going through all the flooding issues here in NJ since the Hurricane and they continue after two weeks. Having been through the fire issues as well when the pine barrens were burning. It's hard to understand until it is you. Yes stuff can be replaced. Not all of it. Not the pictures and mementos saved from childhood or special occasions. Yes be grateful to get out safe but it is hard to lose those things. I know how hard it is to lose things and have no insurance. My brother is actually going through that as we speak. They don't have flood insurance when you live on a mountain. But they had a flood. I just hope that it all works out and everyone does get out safely and then they do get to recover some of those things that do mean so much to people. Children need to feel safe and a teddy bear or favorite blanket can sometimes mean the world to them. Best wishes to all.

You're in our thoughts for sure, I know the beautiful pine tree lined lane we drove last year on our way to my in-laws is gone now, I think of the people and homes we passed on that drive.
Keep us in touch through the site or through Free, we're all thinking of all of those affected by this disaster.

Thanks everyone. We have been cleaning out toys to donate. I had the kids walk through their morning routine and the things they used each day. We went to Target to help me pick out pillows, blankets, toothbrushes, toothpaste, bath gels, brushes, lotions, etc. We bought totes so they had something to keep their things in. Each of the kids bought something with their own money for the child who would get the tote. They wrote notes and we took them to a donation center. I placed a gift card to each of my kids favorite clothing stores in the card and am hopeful a bit of normal will help out...
I know this may sound political but I am curious, where are the benefits, the star studded telethons, etc...it makes me sad that celebrities rush out to help other countries before they help there own. Because of our first responders the loss of life has been wonderfully low, though any loss is tragic. We are pulling together and taking care of our own but they will need more than I can offer.
Much love to all of you! Thank you my friends!

Re: Texas Fires
Julianna, I understand your frustration. I think there is so much tragedy right now. I can only speak for this area but I know the com unities are doing what they can.It seems everyplace has been designated a disaster area. Where to begin is the question that comes to my mind.We have so many still not back in their homes, still sorting through the remains of their lives.Trying to help your neighbors and friends and families.
I really wanted to pass something on to you when I read your latest post.Sorry but once again my post will be long but it is for Juliannan to read and I hope bring some comfort.
I know what you are doing is to help those who have lost so much and hope that they get some comfort after what has happened. There is something that I learned when 9-11 happened. Like everyone we all felt so angry and helpless and frustrated and wanted to do anything to be of some help in what seemed an impossible situation where there was nothing that could be done but sit , watch , hope and try to go on with some sort of normal in our day to day lives. We like you but on a larger scale because I had the means to do it got a donation center set up and made deliveries to the ground zero workers and people who distributed the other needed items to those who had no homes to go back to. Yes I'm sure it helped in some small way. But I noticed it helped myself, my children and all the others that were doing it also. It helped us feel like we were doing something , no mater how small, we were doing something. I think it really helped many of us get through that time.I think it will help you and your children when you look back on this some day. Of course it teaches them all the lessons of giving and being grateful for what we have and all the other messages we want or children to know. But it's a deeper thing that they get out of this that is almost hard to explain. I know my children who are now 16, 22, and 25 still remember all that and feel very good that they were able to do anything at all. I look at them and see it as therapy that got all of us through it as well as helped the people going through it. It really is a great thing your doing for not just the needy families but for your family as well.It is hard to get past the anger and frustration after a tragedy of any kind. That is something I don't know if it ever goes away completely.

Chazzy, sorry I missed your post. We are fine, still trying to help some friends and family. Most are in apartments or have found homes in other locations. It will be spring before anyone knows if their pine trees will come back, those trees are what made the area so lovely...
