Your First Car
Ok, Chazzy asked for some new topics and I just finished watching a video that Kiss sent me about a 90 year old lady that still drives her 1964 Mercury Comet that she bought brand new. It has 560,000 miles on it, has had 13 batteries and 7 exhaust systems all replaced under lifetime warranties. She said she's had it up to 120 MPH (because that as high as the speedometer went!) and she's driven it on the Daytona Speedway. Pretty cool story.
Anyway, mine was a 69 LTD Coupe. Complete with an under dash 8 track player. Vinyl top and vinyl interior. Power steering and brakes and as was an inherent feature of Fords of that era - plenty of rust!

Re: Your First Car
i had a 1979 Mercury Monarch, no rust, the only thing wrong with the interior was that the center arm rest was missing. it had a 302 engine. i paid $900 for it, and two weeks after i paid it off, the engine blew a main bearing. was gonna rebuild it with my dad, but upon further inspection, all the cylinders were scored pretty bad too. wanted to buy a rebuilt engine for it, and at the time there wasn't a 302 to be found for under $1,00o...i only paid $900, i ended up selling it for scrap metal when we moved a few years later. (only got $25 for it, cuz i lost my title somehow)

Re: Your First Car
1999 Ford Taurus. The car was a p.o.s. when I got it. My parents paid for it and bought it because it was cheap. There was an awful engine knock if you stepped on the gas. Had a salvage title. Needed driver side mirror replaced. All of the electric windows went out a week after I bought it. A week after that the heater core went out and started pumping antifreeze fumes into the car. We routed around that because it was a pita to fix the heater core. On my high school graduation night, about a year and a half after I got it, the transmission seized. Junked it for 350 bucks. I hated that car.

Hey! Unless youre a spoiled brat that had a daddy that bought them a brand new car, most of us had some very USED cars, and used cars are a lot of work! Which includes a lot of parts and accessories, manufactured by some one in a factory and sold in an auto parts store, thereby effecting hundreds, maybe thousands of workers. And even if you are one of those spoiled brats with a new car, it effects auto plant workers, dealership employees, banks and insurance companies. Therefore, its very appropriate for Labor day. Thats my story and I'm stickin to it

Re: Your First Car
Well, the first car I bought was a 1983 - 84 ish. I don't remember the exact year. It was a very stylish Ford Mercury Turbo Laser. It was burgundy, and it talked. My dad thought it was pretty cool, as did most kids who rode with me. You have to realize it was after the show Knight Rider. I liked it cause it was fast.

I never had any trouble until I wrecked it one night, by running underneath a 1/4 ton truck which was at a dead stop on the highway. The mechanic was the brother of the guy my girlfriend was dating. That dumb ass, M'F'ker put the brain box in backward. It was constantly shorting out on me. The only other issues, at times I would blow a tire. See, I ran underneath this truck, all the way up to my windshield. Not a scratch on either side of my car, but it messed up the front.

Re: Your First Car
Growing up our family car was a 1962 Corvair. It had a big red bubble like top, and white lower body. Everyone thought this car was pretty cool as well. Even though it looked small, it was pretty roomy inside.

Now, you all are gonna eat your hearts out with this one.
My cousin Skip lives in Michigan. He has a great job in auto sales selling Porsche, Mercedes, BMW, Vettes, Ferrari, etc. at LAKESIDE LLC IMPORTS AND UNIQUE AUTOS. . He has a couple of nice bikes, too!

He still has his blue convertible 1963 Ford Galaxie 500, which he bought new. Allot of memories.

A brand new, 1947 Chevy! Only when I got it, how do you say it, "Previously owned". Put a 100% down payment on it, or "For just one easy payment!" 50 buck's. I was,14, (back in the olden day's). Let's just say, not leagally driven. Yes, I was the shit. Just an aside, back then as I recall having to walk allllll the way, across the living room, to change channel's. .

Re: Your First Car
Mine was a bad choice, but then I had no choice, I had to buy whatever was on the small privately owned car lot to get it financed through the owner.

There were cracks in the dash to designate where to pound your fist to make things work, like the speedometer and gas gauge.

Re: Your First Car
Chazzy brought back a memory of many years ago, and yes but along the same line.we had the old B&W rounded screen tv. To straighten out the picture, that distorted corner to corner, was a spot on the side, had to bang to get the picture. After I got cars, somehow the same banging on it, did'nt seem to work. Actually, just made it worse! Go figure?

Re: Your First Car
My first car was a, "1968 Plymouth Valiant". My father gave it to me 23 years after he bought it, brand new, and ran it into the ground. I drove it for two-weeks before I hit a pothole and drove the leaf springs up into the trunk... For a long time after that, I wedged two logs in between the trunk body and the shackles to the leaf springs. I used to joke that I had wooden suspension...

Well, I grew up dirt poor on a small farm in Kansas. My first "Car" was a 1969 ford pickup with a blown engine & sitting out in the pasture, Dad said he would help me fix it up to I'd have a decent, reliable vehicle. I rebuilt the engine, my aunt did upholstery so she made new seats for me, Dad helped me get it repainted & chrome wheels. BTW, gas was .62 cents then

Re: Your First Car
I don't remember what year and all the stuff you guys remember like engine size and all. I do remember a few other little details. It was iridescent lime green. I think it was a charger. At least I could always find it in a large parking lot!Trust me I miss that. I always loose my car in parking lots. Anyway , It ran great. They guy we got it from was a friend of my dad's who was a mechanic and owned a shop in Brooklyn so it ran well. I remember I had to pay half and my parents paid the other half. I think my share was $200. It ran great but it leaked real bad. I don't mean like leaking oil or gas. I mean when ever it rained it rained inside the car. NO it was not a convertible. So I wouldn't have puddles I had to punch holes in the floor boards with a screw driver. That wasn't to hard to do being it already had some and I was basically putting holes in rust for the most part. The holes that were already there were just not in the right places. lol Oh I almost forgot I couldn't drive with heals on because my heal would get stuck in the hole in the floor board by the gas pedal.(I didn't put that one there.)

It had a pretty good stereo in it. My brother installed it for me and I remember it was very hi tech. It had a cassette player.

Right after I bought that car, the guy that sold it to us won the NY lottery for $86,000,000 and I believe he retired.(At the time it was the biggest lottery in NY State history.)

Some of us may have had their Daddy buy cars...my first car was a white Mustang. It was a consolation by comparison to the 1965 Porsche my pops promised me UNTIL he called the insurance agent...the insurance on that brand new Mustang for a sixteen year old girl was half the price of the Porsche. I still have to wipe a tear from my eye when one blows by me on the road...I did, however name that Mustang...Sally

Re: Your First Car
My first car was a 1999 Mitsubishi Mirage DE Coupe. Before anyone says anything about "mommy and daddy bought it", I bought it brand new and made every payment on it and even finished paying it off 4 months after it was totaled.
It was a strip down model, didn't even come with a clock, let alone a radio or any other audio device. Standard transmission, which was very forgiving, which was good for someone very unfamiliar with driving a standard. No power anything, which sucked donkey balls. The dealership did put in an aftermarket Blaupunkt system, and 2 1/2 weeks after I bought it, the salesman informed me that it also came with a LoJack system. I had a lot of fun in that car, and beat it to hell, but it still kept running, even after a head-on collision with a telephone pole as I was avoiding a moron pulling out of a parking lot with no regard for anyone else on the road. The car started right up and I was able to back it off the curb so it could be hauled off on a wrecker.

Re: Your First Car
The car before this one was a 1990 Mitsubishi Mirage Hatchback XL. I bought it new off the lot. It was blue with gray interior. It was a damn dependable car, great gas mileage, a stick shift, and I drove it like it was a truck.

I drove it everywhere. Louisiana, Washington D.C. I put over 200 miles on it. I can't believe if now, but I use to keep an overnight bag and a bunch of bottles of alcohol in the back. I roll over to my girl fiend's house on the beach, open up the hatch like it was open bar time. Crown Royal, Vodka, Kahlua.

Later, it was great to haul my 3- 75# dogs. Really nice and roomy in the back. I bought a new car in 2000, let my dad drive my this one. He ended up wrecking (totalling) my car. He was 80 years old, and his first accident.

I really wanted another but forget when I went looking. I bought a Ford. No trouble with it either.

The Mirage was a great car. I'm still trying to understand why Mitsubishi stopped making it. One trip, I took my Mirage from Groton, CT to Cape May, NJ. On the way down, there was no traffic in NYC, and I got 46.8 mpg. They probably got heat from the oil companies that the vehicle's fuel economy was too high for their liking.
