Anyone knowing about cats can you help?
All joking aside we are worried about the kitten. The cat seems to be cuddly and pacing but that's about it. The kitten is acting really strange and has us worried.
He will be fine then out of no where just freaks and acts terrified. Then hides until he calms down. He has done this several times and seems like maybe he sees something. He looks terrified.....Can anyone help?

Re: Anyone knowing about cats can you help?
I have one, she has a name but I refer to her as storm kitty...she senses a bad turn in the weather and freaks out a bit, she just panics and runs to one of several hiding spots and won't come back out till the storm has passed.

If this is a recent sudden and complete change in the kitten, might need to plan a visit with the vet.

i think i know key word i THINK. the cats can sense stuff like this and maybe there is a high build up of electrically as they can sense that best.

it all has to do with this storm right cuz in ur other post they been acting up since then right? try having them near almost babying them and see if it helps keep them calm. if this doesn't work post again and if im home i'll research some more for u

Re: Anyone knowing about cats can you help?
Cats are something I actually know something about. They, as human animal and all other species, have individual personallities, some subtle, others radical. I've had cats, you'd swear they were out of thher minds, yet others so calm, needed to check them, to see if they were still breathing. I've had a ton of cats in my life, and the two I have now, could'nt be more different from each other. That you describe, may be just a trait of him now, and I've experienced, they all change, like people, as they get older. If you're really concerned, a trip to the vet may be warranted, or, as I do with mine, keep an eye on them, love and enjoy. I also have 2 Mexican small breed dogs (put it that way cause I can't spell chihuahua, see?), they are both have indiviaual personallities. Best of luck to you, and the kitty.

Re: Anyone knowing about cats can you help?
My storm kitty prefers a shelter of sorts, she's learned what cabinet doesn't latch fully and she can pull it open, dive in and hide herself in back corner, she knows what drawer on which dresser she can pull open herself and she "digs" until most of the contents are in heap in front of the dresser and she burrows and hides there.

She comes out when she feels it is safe, all danger has passed and returns to her normal calm self.

A cat has delicate ear equilibrium, they can easily sense barometric and atmospheric changes , animals are intinctinve like that.

I also have two storm squirrels, two litter mates, yearlings. We had such a bad spring with hail and storms that these two would leave their treetop leave nest way in the back yard and scurry the hollow of a tree in my front yard when they sense a storm coming.

Maybe let him have a open drawer, or leave a closet or cabinet door open, to see if he might be able to find his own shelter to comfort himself. Could be instinct is telling him to find a safe place and being such a young kitten, he does not know where that place is yet. Trying to hold onto the kitten might cause him to panic even more.
If between you and the kitten, you can a suitable shelter for him to run to, in an emergency, you'll know exactly where he is and where you can find him.

You take care, Newbs....sometimes the animals seem to know more about what's going on than all the news station meterologists.

Long, long before TV and radio, the farmer's livestock let him something big is coming.

Re: Anyone knowing about cats can you help?
Another difference, if I may, in my 2 cats is, when kicking back, looking out the sreen door, cars passing and and other disturbances, one will get upset, maybe get away from it, as the other, will just lay there, and think (as if I can read thier minds, ya, RIGHT!), "Interesting". Just one of thier differences. And true, animals have natural sences (sp?), that we are just too smart to have. Thats a joke, all, but true.

Re: Anyone knowing about cats can you help?
It is true, we don't use or rely on our senses anymore when we have high tech crap and 24 hour news stations.

It's a good thing really, if your cat or other pet finds it's own "safe place" when they sense that need. If, God forbid anything happens like a house fire, you will always know where to find your pet. Especially cats, in a disaster of any kind like a house fire, they most likely not, no matter how close your bond, come to you, look to you to save them...they will panic and instinctively go to their safe place and it's best to know where that place is.
People have died in house fires, because they were frantically searching for their pets who were hiding.

Re: Anyone knowing about cats can you help?
I do know that all animals act odd during storms etc,but I never saw a cat act like this he was terrified and when he did it the first time it was sudden and was just from a half a sleep state. When he calms down he just wants to be held.

Re: Anyone knowing about cats can you help?
There's no chance the kitten got into anything? No chance he's been getting a chew off any houseplants that might be giving him a hallucinogenic effect?

Perhaps a Klondike bar would sooth them. [Same for the cat}

Re: Anyone knowing about cats can you help?
Little known fact, cats six sense is in fact a reaction to barometric pressure. In storms and such, this pressure rises and drops dramatically, which puts undue pressure on cats hearing. I imagine it must be ten times worse for a kitten as appose to a full grown cat. Think of it as the pressure you experience in flight. The faking of chewing gum makes your ears pop, but what do you do for a cat or kitten who doesn't understand what the pressure really is and why it occurs.

Re: Anyone knowing about cats can you help?
we have a kitten too, she is peppery and the same way, hides, tears around the place and is just spookie, she even looks alittle evil too.she attacks the older cats babe don't mind so much she likes ruff housing and blackie rather be on top of something out of her reach.. babe cat i think don't like storms and she wakes me up and lets me know , maybe she is the barometer too. she was and is good to have around when there was no warning system.
i guess the best thing to do for it is to give it plenty of lovin

Re: Anyone knowing about cats can you help?
I spoke to the vet. The kitten even threw up. He said he really thinks its storm related and the kitten is just not sure what is going on. He said just make sure he has a place to hide and feel safe.It seems he just wants to be held and that's what we have been doing except when he goes down to play for a little while. OK at the moment the cat and kitten have to be in the same room for safety reasons and the cat is just growling and hissing. I wish this weekend was over.............I have a serious migraine!

Thank you all for you advice and suggestions.

Re: Anyone knowing about cats can you help?
Hope your kitty settles and calms back down soon. I have a rather large cat population in my home but only one "storm kitty"
Just one of mine freaks out before and during a storm. She likes to hide in my lower kitchen cupboard.

Re: Anyone knowing about cats can you help?
I just wanted to give everyone an update being so many answered on this thread. The cat and kitten have finally settled down. The night the storm went through I slept in one bed, my daughter in another in her room and we each had a cat and they both did great. After she finally sprayed the older one with a water bottle to stop him from hissing at the kitten. He so didn't like that! But he stopped.lol I didn't want to spray him but once got his attention so I guess it was ok and desperate times call for desperate measures.

I am hoping we never have to deal with that again. I do think it was a lot like when my kids were little. The frustration of knowing something is really bothering them and them not being able to say what it is and you know they don't understand either.I just never saw a animal look as frightened as the kitten when we saw no reason. It being so sudden and out of the blue is also a shock.Maybe as he gets older he will handle it better, and so will we. My daughter would be happy to have a few less scratches from when he freaks out!

Thanks for your help everyone.
