Your first day of school
Just sitting on my front porch this morning, along rolls the school bus.
Do you recall your very first day of school?
Growing up in a small town, there was no kindergarten, so my first day was in the first grade.
Scary and exciting. Weeks before my mother buying us a few new clothes, school supplies that I could only imagine how I would be using them. School was just a few blocks away, so we walked, but I thought then that it must so much more fun to ride the school bus, but most kids that did, hated it.
Since there was no kindergarten, most children learned their ABCs and to read and write by family and baby sitters.
Some in the class weren't taught that, but they quickly caught up.
The first day, little boys with their button up and collar shirts tucked in, little girls with big ribbons and barrettes in their hair.
So many new faces, we only knew the other children that lived in our block, or children from Sunday School. That first day, there were all these children from the out laying farm areas that we had never seen before.
Then there were a few, that were dragged in kicking, screaming and crying!

Re: Your first day of school
You have a very vivid memory. I don't recall a first day anywhere.
I remember our Methodist Church. My mother directed the children's programs or tried. I recall her trying to get everyone on stage and to stay there. I remember the outside events, including like a pony ride. I rode all day. And, a football game on the lawn. My brother, and our friends. Robin had the ball and ran into the cement wall. I remember her tears, and them holder her arm. She had a bad break and a nasty scar.
In school, I didn't ride the bus, my mom drove me. I must have always been a little crazy. One day I didn't wait for her to stop the car and started to get out. She said she couldn't stop, cars were behind her. I'm not sure how far she drug me. I remember waking up in my bed with my parent's and a doctor standing over me, saying I wouldn't need braces or something.
Not much memory from my very first school, other than the walk into the front of the school. It was in Miami, and I don't remember the teacher, just no one was very friendly. One little Cuban girl told the whole class if I came to her house, her dad would chop me into little bits.
The next school I remember learning how to use glue and scissors. I remember the playground, and one little school kid kidnapped and I think I was suppose to be one of the super heroes, and I wasn't to tell anyone. You know, normal stuff!!!

Re: Your first day of school
I remember the clothes. We always dressed up for school those days. Especially at the beginning of the school year. We had one day a week that was called "assembly day". We all had a uniform for that day. The girls had to wear Navy blue skirts and white button down tops with this red tie type of thing. We had white ankle socks and Maryjane shoes.(Now it sounds like the things guys fantasize about in some of those porno's. .lol).The boys wore Navy blue pants, a belt, a white button down shirt and a red tie. The rest of the week we just had to be dressed "properly". We did take sneakers to school for gym. The girls wore what the called "skippy's" and the boys wore "converse".
We also had fire drills all the time. And only for the very early years they still did the bomb drills where they had us hide under our desk, as if we got hit by a nuclear bomb our desk would save us. lol
We carried our books with a rubber book band that would wrap around our books and clip on. It was adjustable. The older cooler kids used military style belts for their books. They got them at the army, navy store.lol
My brothers had to walk me to school because I was the youngest. My brothers hated it!I was so shy that I used to hug their arms and try to hide behind them if someone looked or talked to us.I know it's hard to believe it but I was painfully shy as a kid.
We also had release time every Wednesday afternoon. That is when anyone who had "religious instruction classes" would get to leave early to go to their church or temple. Then there where the other kids that came for "before school" and stayed for "after school" for those families who's parents had work and no one to watch the kids.A lot of kids were jealous because those kids would get extra milk or chocolate milk and cereal in the morning and cookies after school.lol
