What a gig
The other day on the news, they talked about a new study just released that concluded that children who use heavy backpacks get back aches, but they felt better when they took them off.
If ya'all happen to notice an ad that the Institute of the Obvious is hiring, clue me in...I could come up "studies" like this all day.

Re: What a gig
There was a study published a while back. The government gave millions in grant money to study why little children fall of tricycles.Really? I must be a fucking genius because I know the reason without spending months and spending millions "watching" little kids fall of tricycles. I can save them so much that I think they should just pay me half and I'll tell tell them why. I bet you all know as well so we must all be fucking Einstein's.Ya, think maybe they fall because they are little kids!

Re: What a gig
While listening to the news report on the backpacks, I had this vision of scientist in white lab coats holding clip boards, and little darling kids with backpack that they keep adding another brick to
Scientist with stop watch "Okay, does that hurt? Hmmmm it does, I see...okay just a while longer"
Child "It hurts! It hurts! Owwwww!"
Scientist clicking to halt the stop watch "Alright then, let's take the backpack off, there...does that feel better?"
(Yes, I do know that is not how they do these studies)

Re: What a gig
I heard one a few months ago and believe I even posted something on here.
A study has proven that students who attend school regularly have a far greater graduation rate than students who dont.
Now thats just brilliant

Re: What a gig
I like the study that said "People that get a good night's sleep and take naps tend to be less tired." Really? I'm shocked.
Or how about the study that said "couples that have a good sex life tend to stay together longer." Again, that's just brilliant!
The best is when they repeat or expand these studies, so they can further study these in more depth.lol

Re: What a gig
I heard one in my math class I was taking this summer that the government spent millions on a study of gay couples to find a correlation between the one who was on top and having a longer penis. Our economy is in the crapper and they're doing studies on this? Really?

Re: What a gig
I work for the government so I see the waste first hand. What sucks is I see the higher ups buying things they don't need and I have to buy my own pens. All my work is in red ink (go figure) but they buy us pens that won't write half the time so I just buy my own. But the commissioner needs a new cherry desk? Sure! Go ahead and get that!

There might be a better study? I see the new pics of my cousin's son with his back pack ready to go to his first day of kindergarten. I asked her if the pack weighs more than he does?
I don't know how much small, little boys weigh at this age, maybe 45 lbs ? Maybe, I am being extreme and over protective, however, I am curious what would be a reasonable and unreasonable amount of weight kids should carry. At a young age their bodies are still developing, poor development, and back injury is a serious matter.

Re: What a gig
They say, the backpack should not weigh more than 15 pounds, I think there is a formula for calculating your child's body weight and how much their packback should weigh, the study has since brought about some morning news features on quality and padded backpack, and the proper wearing of them.

Re: What a gig
This is not a new study, and yes there is a formula. Based on height and weight of the child and percentages They also have back packs with waist straps and wheels. The problem is even if you get the right back pack and distribute the weight as they recommend the kid has to wear it properly and they just don't. They just throw it over one shoulder. Many schools don't care but others are getting better most text books are on CD or online these days. There are some who chose to use on CD or on line. There are some draw backs to them but at least if the kids have a heavy load they can chose which books to take and which ones they carry. Remember that they also have note books and other supplies as well as many have laptops and a bottle of water. This all adds to a heavy load. Many schools don't allow back packs at all others say clear or netted or no wheel so they have to worry about those things too.It was so much easier when I went to school.Buy the way many classes have multiple text books these days and even bullet proof text books and notebooks. How crazy is that!?

Re: What a gig
The endless stupid studies and costs for what our officials need (cherry desk, really?) are ridiculous. I can see issues about backpacks but isn't that part of a parents job? Keep the heavy books in the locker, is that so hard. Governments spend far to much on bs and themselves.

Do they still have lockers?

My kids have always had lockers, even in remote Alaska.

So, I am stepping out a little further on this one. What is your opinion of Online K-12 schooling?
"A classroom of one, a remarkably effective education option that is individualized to meet each child's needs."

might be good for knowledge learning, but not good for teaching socialization skills, or street smarts.

Our kids don't have lockers until Middle school. Even then there is a shortage of lockers so not all have them. The other issues are the kids are not allowed to go to their lockers during the day. Only at the beginning and end of the school day are they allowed at their lockers. Gym lockers are a separate locker and only used for that gym class then you take you stuff with you so the next group can use those lockers. There is also a huge issue with theft out of lockers.Schools are very different these days.
I don't know what you mean about backpacks being "the parents job". I always bought them but the school sets the rules as to what they allow or not allow. They sometimes use the excuse of public safety for some rules even when it is ridiculous at times. Our high school and middle school tried to ban any bags of any kind even pocket books but everyone went crazy and told them to fuck off.The girls got so mad they walked around holding tampons in the air as a protest just to get a point across as to how over board the school administration was getting. The school first said fine we will allow just pocket books but then the boys said that was unfair so the school finally backed down and they are back to carrying back packs.By the way the text book are so large these days that my daughter normally has some books in her bag and some in her arms.
