Stubborn Recession
Heard a story on the news the other day that in the 2nd quarter of this year that around 400,000 cable and satellite subscribers cancelled their TV subscriptions. And that's just in 3 months! Im too much of a news and politics junkie to be able to do that. But the story also said that people are opting to get their news and entertainment from the interweb. Any of you guys doin that? Or other things that you gave up or cut back on?

Re: Stubborn Recession
No cable here, just local channels and the net. When I lived in Alaska had no tv for over a year.

Re: Stubborn Recession
I dropped all my land-line phone features. I had everything on it before money got tight, call reject, call ID, call repeat. call forward, voice mail etc... Now I don't even have out going long distance. Well technically I am able to but if I do It would cost a fortune because there is no "package" so its about 45 cents a minute if I use it. So anyone that wants to talk to me calls me.I don't call out.We all have cell phones and they have free long distance and after 9 pm and weekends are unlimited as well so we call out then. Also if our friends and family are on Verizon wireless its free and unlimited as well so we do a lot of that.
Cable is hard for this family because most of my family makes there living from it. I don't anymore but I had to have it when I worked, but of course I didn't pay for it and had every station so it was great. Now that I pay for it I am not as thrilled. Now that I don't have to monitor commercials it isn't necessary for me to have cable and broadcast TV.
Just about everything on TV can be watched through the Internet or on my smart-phone (If I update my smart-phone it will get even more content than I get now). Some people aren't aware of the fact that more and more networks and independents are even producing shows strictly for Internet and are never aired on TV. Some media knowledgeable people know about these and they have become very big. Don't be surprised if you start seeing award shows with these being recognized in a big way.
I am considering dropping my cable and using Internet and Netflix for my news and entertainment. Free, you can view it all through the Internet on your TV. You can call me and I will tell you how to set it up if you want. lol We did it for my mom when she dropped cable but still wanted to watch the stuff my brother has on air. My other brother is an executive at a major cable network and she wanted to be able to watch that so we hooked her up with that as well. All through the Internet. One great thing is NO commercials on some of these methods but others have built in advertising so they can keep it free. But you still get to see it all.EVEN NEWS.They even have a "naked news" broadcast that is pretty good.(yes they have male versions and female)

Re: Stubborn Recession
My lifestyle is virtually unchanged, as I live so simple. Really, my only luxury, is the net on my cell (all I use). Just a friendly tip, we have'nt seen real trouble yet. Free will probably know what I'm talking about.

Re: Stubborn Recession
My night cable time is my Xanax, the day is done, I wind down by focusing on documentary shows about the vast universe or far away ancient exotic places, I can really devote my attention and zone in on a documentary. Somtimes it's like bed time stories, and I fall deep asleep listening to the narrator's voice. (I'm considering audio books as an alterntive for that)
News, I get from the internet, I can control what news and when I get it. I get a bit annoyed with the milking tv news allot of the 24 hour news stations do(before every break, they tell you stay tuned, the most enticing bit of news will come next after the commerical but it's always much, much later on. Screw it.
We still have our landline, beccause regionally, the best deal for unlimited phone, cable and internet is the bundle. Rarely ever use the cell unless I'm leaving the house.
