Re: sit around the campfire
Oh yeah, just the sounds of crackling fire, rushing water from the river, those tiny little frogs along the bank,
Waking up to some one making coffee and frying bacon.
I don't have a sleeping bag, someone bring an extra please.

1st, I plant the rows wide enough to get the tiller through it, 2nd, I use a mesh fiber to help control the weeds,, which leaves very little weeds to hoe

If we all stop eating and drinking what is bad for us or causes cancer or whatever,we wouldn't eat, drink or breath.
I happen to hate hot-dogs (except when I'm pregnant or the occasional (I mean like once every five years or so ) craving for a Nathans Frankfurter from Coney Island in Brooklyn or a dirty water hot dog.But still there is the belief that you should enjoy life as long as you don't kill yourself doing it. So enjoy that hot dog just do it in moderation. Besides next week there will be a new study that it cures something else.
Just out of curiosity, did anyone ever eat a hot dog thinking it was actually healthy? Lets get real that would be like saying I ate chocolate in the amounts I have my entire life because I thought it would make me skinny. I don't need a study to tell me It's fattening, and I'm sure no-one needs the study to say that hot-dogs are fatty and filled with crap. So save the money on the studies and use it for something that makes sense.
So go out to the campfire and cook and enjoy. Just don't read the studies that say that the fire causes cancer because of all the carcinogens. See I just saved someone thousands on a study.

The way I see it is that I'll eat, drink, and breathe whatever I please rather than stressing out about calories, fat, carbs, sodium, potassium, and whatever else doctors want everyone to look at in the "nutritional information" that is supposed to be on every product out there. I'd spend so much extra time in the supermarket if I did that. I'd also end up stressing myself out so much trying to keep track of everything that I'd probably have a stroke or heart attack before I turn 40. How healthy is it now? If people don't like my decision, just remember that it's my life, not yours.

I don't think there is any real harm in a few hotdogs around the campfire. Our ancestors got along pretty well with cooking their unrefrigerated mammoth meat on an open fire.

That was before we "new and improved" them with chemicals, nitrates, sulfates, growth hormones, flavor enhancers......Don't you love progress. Glad to see they are watching out for us and making our life better.FDA is doing such a bang up job.I wish they would stop helping and leave our food alone and maybe we can go back to eating real meat with our meat.

Re: sit around the campfire
Some of the best times in my life were sitting around a fire..sometimes on a Sunday night, maybe on the weekend after the gig...we had a place way back in the woods, we'd build a fire and a handful of people would show up...usually three or four guitars...playing songs that we knew and those we didn't know and it didn't matter. No pressure of an audience, just play...anything. There was no "I can't sing"....if one felt like singing along, go for it! Play your nose, it was about fun..and that's exactly what we had. I learned as many cool songs, finger picking styles and chords in that arena as I did in the clubs...the laughs were huge. Again, such fond memories...I would love to relive those days.

Re: sit around the campfire
pine bough work good , we were up in Minnesota in a native village, it was pouring down rain all the around the big lake, they also have the fur trappers fort there too, were the gun flint trail started around the pigeon river falls ,don't go in the water leaches....but they had the native gardens and birch bark huts i would call them they were quite dry and nice in side, all ya needed was a small fire to keep the dampness off, and some nice furs to kick back on, smoke your pipe and and chew some venison... it was a 14 mile hike to the upper falls and the other fort with your supplies and furs , put your canoe in and off to the boundary waters ....sometimes i think i was born 250 years too late

Re: sit around the campfire
I joke about camping and although there are some types I would never do. Like camping with my sleeping bad hanging from the side of a mountain or other extreme camping. The truth is I have three kids and all have been in scouting and big on camping. Although I do try to camp with as many comforts as I can bring I do like to go camping. There are just some things and places you can enjoy camping that you can't get from staying at a hotel. In many cases it can be the most restful sleep you will ever get.
We go to a place for SCUBA divers that you camp out on the property. It's so pretty and nice that we can hang out with all our friends that are there to dive as well and enjoy stories and campfires as well as food and just general fun like some of the people that bring guitars and sing at the camp fires.
If there is anyone that has never been camping you can go as rough or as comfortable as you choose and I really do think you should try it at lease once or you are missing out.

i love to watch all them survival shows on discovery and other chsns, with them living off the land , sleeping in trees , eating tree bark, snakes and turtle claws , bugs ,grubs and so one , I'm just not that hungry yet...lol
i have had venison, Buffalo, rabbit, duck, goose, gator ants lion ostrage and a few others . too many people up here with Lupus and duck is dry and goose is greasy.
then we got them movies like Jeremiah Johnson , dances with wolves and Jeremiah didn't like his new wife's cooking and tells the kid to go check the traps and bring back some proper food ,,, were back to eating beaver again in stead of elk, and with dances they were chasing Buffalo
i myself will stick with a rack of baby back ribs off the grill and icecream sandwiches

Re: sit around the campfire
Well, I've been camping a couple of times. The first time was nice at Peace River. We were just kids. We had a large tent with bunk cots. They had a large swimming hole with a swing. Lots of kids of all ages. I was only 7, and I got slammed into by a kid on the swing.
I also remember my mom, me and my two brothers canoeing. If I was 7 they were 10, and 5. Is that really safe? One adult and 3 kids?
My ex-husband's family were big on boating, fishing, and camping. Lake George is a nice spot, just watch out for snakes dropping into the boat.
There was the one time it was pretty cold, around 32'. The ground was cold and hard. Didn't sleep well anyway. All night I heard the sounds of raccoons screeching and fighting. Seems even though they wedged the cooler under the picnic table, the raccoons got into it eating all the eggs, bacon, etc. They had another cooler in one of the tents. I think I would have been a little nervous about that.
I know I had a good friend who was explaining to me how FUN camping is. I retold my story. He kinda agreed, it didn't sound like much fun. And, the was a building with bathrooms and showers. A plus! My ex found his way in there so we could have sex .

Re: sit around the campfire
My mother was talked into camping at Lake George when she was a teenager or a bit older, maybe early twenties. She was and is petrified of snakes so they convinced her that if she tied a rope around the tent at ground level the snakes wont go over it so she will not have to worry about it. (She got much smarter as she got older.lol) They also told her that she had to go to the campsite by canoe and that she didn't need to worry because canoes "can't" sink. It started pouring on the way. In those days they used down blankets and other very heavy and absorbent things when camping.Well it turns out if you have enough down and wool get wet canoes CAN and DO sink! I don't think she has gone camping since.lol

Re: sit around the campfire
chazzy the gator i tried i wasn't impressed,it was nastier.
and free that's not camping if your at motel 6 , that's not even a good motel, damn noisy but i do like a pool.
camping is sleeping in some kind of make shift shelter or tent, on the ground with the dirt ashes and bugs, getting soaked in a storm, we even had one night up in munising were a tree fell over that was close enough to feel the ground bounce. and ya we been raided by the coons too , steal my chips ahoys will they and a loaf of bread too.
up here , some places are clearly posted to hang your food from a tree or you will get a fine , becouse yoggie bear will come and rip your windows out just to steal yor picnick basket. i never had that problem but they did take my fishing bait for me one night, my minnows and leaches and crawlers....and as that wasnt enough for them they had to empty 3 dumpters too all over the parking lot

I've had yogi show a time or two while camping with the boy scouts. Not good when going to the can and come around the corner only to be face to face with yogi and boo boo to. Needless to say, didn't need to go the bathroom any more. Mostly just rocky the racoon made his presents known, and his friends the ants.
